Poll: 23% Of Texans Think Obama Is Muslim

Houston Chronicle:

A University of Texas poll to be released today shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.

Now, now. The most up-to-date poll for Texas on 538 has McCain leading Obama 54-44 and the Houston Chronicle endorsed Obama. Much to my disappointment, it's unlikely that Texas will go for Obama this round, but it is getting bluer. In the midterms, Dallas County went blue and there's a good chance it will again.

What do you expect, given the power of right-wing TV and radio over a very large segment of the voters, pushing their version of reality as well as demonizing anyone who disagrees? I'm still floored by the poll in mid-2004 that found that the percentages of people who still believed that Iraq had nuclear weapons or was involved in 9/11 was 25% among viewers who got most of their news from PBS, about 40% among viewers of the broadcast networks (NBC, ABC, CBS), and nearly 60% among viewers of Fox News! That is irrefutable evidence that Fox News makes their viewers stupid (or that it attracts stupid viewers; either way, not a good ad in favor of Fox News). What is needed is a strong effort to demonstrate to consumers of all partisan news sources (on either side of the political spectrum) how those biases distort reality and cause them to be misinformed and ignorant of the evidence (to the detriment of their country, if not their lives directly).

We're about half and half here, maybe 55 to 45. Remember, we are a bit like PA in that we have lots of rural areas that vote Rethugliecon.

Dallas voted BLUE in 2006, and we will again this year. Austin is always blue. So are El Paso and most of the border counties.

The Democratic movement here is great, and Texas will be bluer in the future! We can educate and get rid of the ignorance.

And, by the way, in the 2006 elections, the Democratic vote for governor was underpolled by every pollster. Obama will do better than expected here.

Since the early eighties, Gallup has found that on average 80% to 85% of Americans do not agree with the theory of natural selection, i.e., Darwin's theory of evolution. Other surveys indicate that 99% of our fellow citizens cannot say what exactly a theory is.
