Houston Chronicle:

A University of Texas poll to be released today shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.

Obviously Texas needs a little more education and a little less football in their schools.

-- First, the nimrod in the White House is not from Texas. He is not really a cowboy. He will soon be selling his Crawford "ranch".

-- It's incredible that progressives and their ideas ever get any traction when people are this misinformed. Just think if a quarter of some states didn't think Obama was an Islamic terrorist that was gonna institute some sort of Soviet collectivization. He'd probably sweep just about every state. Most people no longer think the Iraq war was a good idea but at the same time, a shockingly high percentage of people think Saddam Hussein was involved with 9-11.

-- Also, people should know that no matter how Texas looks as a whole, it does have some reliably Democratic areas like Travis county (Austin), and Jefferson county (the far southeast corner of Texas, next to the Louisiana border, which includes Port Arthur and Beaumont).

There was a good article in the New Yorker a week or to ago about how the good people of Crawford will be happy to see Bush's backside when he leaves office and sells the "ranch." Bush has only attended church there three times in eight years.

I regret to say we have more than our share of rabid Republican cheerleaders in Texas.
You can't reason with someone who is determined to vote against his own self interests.

I used to live in Texas and I believe it. The conservatism is outrageous there. But surpisingly, Texas is a BIG Church of Christ area so they should know that their "brother is Christ" was not a Muslim.

I don't know how long ago you lived in Texas, but Texas is not as conservative as it was years ago. This year The Austin American-Statesman, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and The Houston Chronicle have all endorsed Senator Obama (in 2004 they backed the republicans). Times they are a changing!

The comments on this thread stereotyping Texans is very offensive and uncalled for.

Texas isn't the only state that have idiots that think Sen. Obama is a muslim and only a dummy would assume so.

No, it is called for. TWO black men have died in dragging deaths there. The second one was just 4 weeks ago. There are towns blacks can't even visit in East Texas. The racism is thick there and I'm glad I left. People there are using the "muslim" lie to hide their racism. Glad I left that "stuck in 1966" hellhole.

Truth is though, there are good people in Texas and if Texas turns blue, we will love you! And kudos to the Dems in Texas, you are brave souls, I couldn't do it.

I am a 48 year old white female Texan and I voted for Obama Tuesday afternoon.
There is huge support for Senator Obama in all of our major cites: Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, San Antonio. Ya'll may be surprised on November 5th when you wake up and Texas is BLUE ;)

But what about small town patriots? they might kill any chance for Texas to turn blue.

A large percentage of Texas thinks George Bush is great too. Big deal, I wouldn't use Texas as a barometer. Bush lives there and so does Karl Rove.

I am a Texan too and I am not stupid or dumb. Everyone has given Texas to McCain. I believe the race will be a lot closer than most people imagine. You have more young people voting, blacks who have never voted in their life and some old people who had given up on the election process because they felt that it didn't matter who was elected. I went to early vote yesterday but the lines were too long at the place I went and I had my granddaughter with me. I went to another location today and the lines were long and most of those people are voting for Obama. Don't count Texas red yet.

As a fellow Texan, I hope you're correct. However, after reading about this poll, it just may be that a lot of people here are voting early to vote against Obama. Odds are that Texas will be red again, but many of us will do our best to change that in the not-too-distance future. And to any other Texans for Obama who haven't cast a ballot yet, don't get mad or sad--vote. Sooner or later, Texas will go blue.
