Poll: 23% Of Texans Think Obama Is Muslim

A University of Texas poll to be released today shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.

Man, that's a tough one to say... A lot of their problems may come closer to lack of proper information to even the atmosphere that surrounds them. I myself hate calling people stupid. Remember that a lot of people don't pay attention and rather lean on a close family member or friend to form their political views. Makes them ignorant? Sure... Stupid? No... Rather makes them loyal. Not trying to blame the media here, but this alone proves that we should be improving our infrastructure for information.

I'd sure like to know how this poll was conducted and who was polled.

While I am embarrassed for all the stupid morons here in TX who constitute that group of "low information voters", there are PLENTY of us here who are informed, progressive and Democrats.

FWIW, here in the Dallas area, Obama bumperstickers outnumber JM bumperstickers by at least 4 or 5 to 1. (Yard signs vary by neighborhood, but cars are probably more representa­tive.)

And the record turnout for early voting DOES work in our favor (though AFAIK, Dallas Co doesn't release demographics on early voters; early voting results will be posted online at 7 PM local time on Tues, when the polls close).

IOW, it is a crying shame there are so many bigoted, ignorant fools down here.
After all, Texas gave us GWB.
But I think you will find that JM's margin here this time will be a fraction of GWB's in 2000 or 2004.
If we progressives have anything to do with it.

I second that even though here in Collin County, they say this year they have registered about 140K new Dems, but you cant tell, as I drive around with my O & B bumper sticker, I get all kinds of looks my way and I have also heard of several folks getting their cars keyed or windows broken in for having O&B bumper stickers..­.

Anyway what I wanted to say is sadly we rank 41 in state education, we are really short changing our kids..

I live in Texas. Not the smartest people in the world surround me, but somehow I manage to live here despite my affection for a football team other than the Dallas Cowboys (Go Packers) and my very left views on politics.

I have yet to be stoned to death wearing my Obama shirts, etc. In fact, I get compliments.

Once I was at Target and this guy about my age (25) is shopping near me and saw my shirt and started going, "Obama, Obama, Obama."

Sad but true. We Texans have a long way to go. Texas Democrats are trying to stage a return but the number of ultra conservatives here is significant and many use the "muslim term" as a means to dodge their real bias. Most have not a clue what a muslim is, they just know they are supposed to oppose them. We few here are doing what we can, but it's a tough row to hoe.
