Houston Chronicle:

A University of Texas poll to be released today shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.

That 23% are probably the same ones who support their Einstein president.

I live in Texas now..with the exception of a few enlightened souls, this place is a bastion of red state ignorance...

If you can, move to a blue county. And don't give up--Texas is slowly trending blue.

This is probably the same group that still believes Saddam Hussein had a hand in 9/11.

Dear Jesus,

I know you might be busy right now, what with all the genocide, famine and war going on and all, but American could really use your help. See, we are involved in an election this year (in case you hadn't heard) and it is getting frightening.

You see, we are trying to create a nation that only worships you, but we can't seem to get all of the people behind us. We've tried lying and smearing, we've tried voter intimitation, but we are still losing. Now I know that the Bible says you are a peaceful man, but honestly, can't you just smite the non-believers and give our side a little help.

I say our side because we are your true believers. You know, pro-life, at least until the baby is born. Pro-family, but only for the "right" people. Pro-marriage but only for the "right" people and unless you find a better spouse later. Pro-war, because that is the best way to spread you message of love and peace. I could go on, but I am sure you see my point.

Anyway, what I am saying is, if we are truly going to do your work on earth, we need your help getting rid of all those who would stop us.

In your name I pray

Faithful Soldier

Poll: 23% of Texans are as dumb as their ex governor, and our worst president ever.

The term "bush league" has a much richer meaning, thanks to the fools of Texas.

It is amazing. The same people saying he is a muslim are those wanting to attack his association with Revd. Wright.

Amazing how you can be a muslim and have a 20yr association with a church and no one ever saw you at the local mosque? I believe reason fled during this election or maybe it was never there to begin.

Anyway, the education system needs a re-hauling and fast too. Being a muslim doesn't mean you are less than human either.

It's sad to say, but I'm not surprised. Right wing radio is part of the blame. They are a bunch of bigoted hate mongers, and they dominate the radio media in TX. Just last evening, I heard Radio talk show host Mark Savage say that liberals have no souls, and if we allow gay marriage, society is going to crumble. And this guy calls himself an independent! This is what they resort to when they have no good arguments. I hope the base of the Republican party destroys itself the way it looks like it will after McFailin loses the election.

I am always entertained by this site. Most posters here as such hypocrits. The democratic party always proclaims itself to be the party that encourages free speech, democracy, and free thinking. And yet, you spend most of your time criticizing and insulting anyone that thinks differently than you. You claim that those on the right are ignorant and misinformed. And yet, anyone who questions "the one" is accused of being a racist hate-monger. You can't stand Fox News because of their media bias, but don't have a problem with the many other news agencies that are bias to the left.

There's enough room in this great country for all of us. Neither party should have total control of our government. There has to be a system of checks and balances to protect our rights and to make sure that ALL Americans are represented. I sincerely hope that Barack Obama proves himself to be all that you think he is and more.

The reason most of us have issues with Fox News is because they constantly claim to be "fair and balanced" when they are anything but. Talk about hypocrisy.

I'm all for checks and balances, but I would like the people on the other side to disagree with policies and express different ideas instead of attacking the character of the opponent with blatant l.ies and smear tactics to incite fear in the i.gnorant "low-information" voters that this article is discussing.

Dear Proud Texas Voter,
Please understand that there is a difference between bias, lying, hate-mongering, bigotry, and stupidity.

My bias is tolerance, pro-choice, and freedom for all Americans. I typically lie when I meet a stupid person but still say "it was a pleasure to meet you" (darn those middle class values). My hate-mongering takes the form of pity instead of hate for those who are afraid of a person because of their religious affiliation, color of their skin, or their name. And my stupidity may yet be that I believe we have finally grown up in this country to vote for a man with a different middle name, a darker tone to his skin, and a willingness to listen to someone like me. I do hope I am not stupid. And I have never in my life been a bigot which is why I can understand that there are some stupid, hate-mongering, lying people out there.

Sincerely,
Proud Liberal

According to your description, we are very much alike. The one difference is that I believe that "pro-choice" should mean, that we...as women have a choice whether or not to have sex and risk pregnancy. I am empathetic to situations such as rape and incest and to situations in which the mother's life is truly in danger. I am vehemently opposed to partial birth abortion (and yes.....I know that this procedure only pertains to less than 2% of all abortions, roughly 2500 babies) I also know that we have drugs available, ie.morning after pill that could decrease the need for many abortions. This being said...sadly, but realistically I know that many women would continue to have back alley abortions if it became outlawed. I would not want to see that happen. The solution is more education on ALL types of birth control methods including abstinence (which is proven to reduce teenage pregnancy)! And, please...no comments about how well this worked for Sarah Palin's daughter.... (none of really know their personal situation and family discussions prior to her pregnancy.) I personally want to believe Obama can and will accomplish all that he says he will. I will support him as long as he strives to unite us all. (and, no.....I'm not a racist or a bigot.....I have many friends that happen to be black and personally wouldn't care if our next President was purple he represented the best interests of America)

Political parties are not part of this country's system of checks and balances. The institutions of government were set up to check and balance one another. Parties were never an intended or desired part of the picture. This is the danger of "group-think." Loyalty to any party is one way to subvert these checks and balances. As the separate institutions are filled up with one party they become either reluctant or completely unwilling to check and balance each other out. This, as evidenced by the past few years, can be extremely dangerous. Conversely, if said institutions are so drastically divided, governance becomes gridlocked and the common good is ignored out of spite due to political loyalty. Safety in numbers is desirable when one is running across the plain hunting food with a stick and some hope, but when it comes to ideology it can become dicey to say the least. However, this is the system we have to work with now. I was born, raised and live in Dallas. I also am voting for Obama. This misinformation of Texas voters is not unacceptable because they are on the right. It is unacceptable because it is ludicrous and is born out of bull-headed ignorance. It's like convincing yourself the sky is not blue, or that the earth doesn't rotate but rather the sun actually rises and sets. These, like Obama's religion (which is a moot point anyway) have all been proven, well documented, and made accessible.
