Houston Chronicle:

A University of Texas poll to be released today shows Republican presidential candidate John McCain and GOP Sen. John Cornyn leading by comfortable margins in Texas, as expected. But the statewide survey of 550 registered voters has one very surprising finding: 23 percent of Texans are convinced that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a Muslim.

Obama is a Christian who was embroiled in a controversy earlier this year about his two-decade membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Yet just 45 percent of those polled identified the Illinois senator as a Protestant.

KF is Jewish and if he hadn't run as an independent, Texas would probably have a Democratic governor. On the plus side, Kinky is now a Democrat.

Proves my theory all along that 23% of all Texans lodge their heads in a rather anatomically challenging position.
I still remember the decade I spent one year in Wichita Falls.

Texas is also the home state of GW Bush and they also let off guys that try to murder their wives. I wish Texas would start a Texan Independence Party.

The great state of Texas. Yes, we have lots of folks here that believe that even when proof shows it's not true. My niece's stepmom said that she was for McCain because Obama's a Muslim. My brother yelled to her that she knows it's not true and yet she wants to continue believing a lie. He told her that she can't have it both ways: either he was sitting in a radical Christian church for 20 yrs or he must've been praying in a mosque for 20 yrs. She literally refuses to believe anything else.

Nice post Sparty. This is a perfect description of willful ignorance.

Oh please. These PEOPLE KNOW Obama is NOT a Muslim. They've taken on the role of the RNC ----FEAR. Not of Obama ------ but place FEAR in the minds of others. At this point, if ANYONE still believes Obama is a Muslim ---- they shouldn't be voting. That's just pure ignorance. Which is precisely WHY I will repeat ----- no, they do not believe Obama is a Muslim. The RNC is simply hoping that they can persuade a few people with FEAR ----- those who would possibly be living in this country WITHOUT television, radio, or computer.

Are people in Texas just dumber or is their education system that bad? Unbelieveable.

I'm a transplant from the West Coast andwe're currently in Dallas. Remember the primaries? Many people outside of this state don't realize how big the rural and small town population is here. While the bigger metro areas will vote democratic, they still can't compete with the rest of the state, IMHO. Also, there's the buying of votes in the border towns. The one who pays the most will get the vote. I think there were articles and spots on the news when it happened this year. They say it happens every election year down there.

One thing I find weird is how many people can't stand Mc Cain and yet they'll still vote for him because they've voted Repub all their lives. I've come across a few in my neighborhood. Is that not cutting off your nose to spite your face? I just don't understand.

My husband, my son, and I voted last week. In our neighborhood, I think we've gotten a pretty good turnout of Dem voters. I ask everyone I know if they've voted yet and for the most part, they have.

I won't hold my breath for a color-change here in Texas, but I'm hoping to see some of it happening in other parts of the country.

Twenty three percent of Texans: the Alamo was attacked by Muslims. Pearl Harbor was attacked by Muslims. The Watergate burglars were Muslims. Anyone or anything not Texan is a Muslim ...

What the poll probably didn't ask was what these people think Muslims believe. Judging by the people I know, including my own family, they think that all Muslims want to kill all non-Muslims. It's actually very embarrassing to those of us in Texas who actually use our brains for thinking and not just to keep our heads from caving in.

Well now - there you have it. What did you expect from George W's homestate?

Apparently all schools busses in Texas are of the short variety.

Actually, I think Connecticut is his home state - Texas is his adopted state. This actually cracks me up - he wants everyone to think he's a good ol' boy when in reality he comes from a place that he term "elitist".

Republicans hate America and apparently so do you. initially, I was offended by your Jack@ss statement but I figured since you are where you're from, everyone in your state and apparently all schools busses in your state, are of the short variety.

Proud Dallas Texan for Obama!

That's okay, because 100% of the rest of us think 75% of Texans are bigoted rednecks.

That's is false assumption. I am a Texan and I have already voted for Obama.

Not to defend Texans, but Obama comes from a mixed cultural heritage which includes Islam. Both his father and stepfather were Muslims. Texans may have difficulty separating one's heritage from one's belief.....but that is one of the big problems of mixing politics and religion. It will be a long time before an atheist (avowed) is elected President.

Yes, this is the specious defense my fundamentalist Christian friends in Texas offer for their totally misguided belief. "His daddy was a Muslim. His granddaddy was a Muslim."

Lest we forget, we are not born into religion, we are steeped in it by our parents. (Like I can still recite the Catholic cathecism even though I don't believe it.)

Barack's father was an agnostic academic who left Barack's mother when the child was 2 years old. After age 6, Barack was raised almost entirely by his Christian grandmother.

Let's call this what it is: racism.

Why should Texans have any more difficulty than, say, Alabamians.

It's racism in disguise.

Does anyone know how many Alabamians believe the same thing? Odds are that a lot of people living in rural areas of red states do, especially if they listen to Rush and watch Fox News.
