Faced with an overwhelming number of prominent conservatives receiving media face time for endorsing Obama, last night Stephen Colbert did the only sensible thing a prominent conservative egotist could do. He endorsed Obama. The move worked (as evidenced by the existence of this post) but Colbert also noted that in this terrible economy, the endorsement might come in handy after he loses his job and applies "to get a job running the combine at the new national farm collective" that President Obama would implement. Colbert also notes that he will still be voting for John McCain.

BTW, early voting is breaking records in NC. We are going to turn this state blue on Tuesday. CNN anticipates reporting NC's numbers before some other swing states. They indicate that a win in NC on election night would indicate that Obama is on pace to win the election, so watch for our numbers. I'm doing GOTV this weekend. Can't wait to get out there and knock on some doors. I'm so excited! I have met people of all races and age groups who are excited as well and that inspires me even more. :-)

Remember, the repubs are starting to come out in droves this weekend. Just make sure that everyone one you know votes. We need Obama badly!

The second best part of this show was right before The Word where Colbert went totally laugh-silly and ended with the McCain campaign becoming "a flaming pile of dog crap on America's doorstep."

Colbert is definitely losing it. Though at least he never claimed to like McCain in the first place.

I can't find "Saying Goodbye to Hating McCain" but I think he still demonstrates his dislike...

Boy o boy.

Colbert's endorsement of Obama was funny and all but it does not rate with his destruction of Republican hacks on Monday night's show.

During The Word segment he went after Frum, Noonan and David Brooks for their distancing themselves from the present Republican tactics of fear because they aren't working this time.

But Colbert points out they had no problem with such tactics when they worked.

It was one of the best, perhaps THE best, political commentary of this overly long campaign.

Absolutely brilliant.

If you missed it go to his web site and check it out.

Like I said. His endorsement was good and funny. But his destroying the Republican cred . . . priceless.

this will help, but mccain's best chance right now would be to get Bush and Cheney to endorse obama.

I always said that that would be the real October surprise. By the way ... 8 hours to go. Could it be that the surprise was in fact patriotism and that enough centrists looked at McCain and his cronies' attempts to call out certain parts of the country as being "anti-American" were the tipping point, where they said, OK, enough's enough? You're done. I'm going with THAT ONE.

For those new to Colbert you can catch up! Google Colbert University and learn all about his character and the show's conceits. Then enjoy the show and take the monthly quiz.

really funny and clever, clever, clever almost enough to make me get cable.

For the record, Colbert is a liberal. His public persona is meant to satirizane the Hannity, Limbaugh, and Bill O'Reilly types.

Good satire is very powerful. What scares me is how so many people seem to not get it. He is speaking truth to power through satire.
02:55 AM on 10/31/2008
Really? Thanks!
01:13 PM on 10/31/2008
LOL, the joys of sarcasm. The real right-wing nut politico-commentators are pretty clue less about such.
07:47 AM on 10/31/2008
Thanks for explaining it to me, too. I thought Colbert was a liberal, but these days who can tell. BTW, now that I,too "get it"- he's funny as hell!! LOL!!!
10:27 PM on 10/30/2008
Yes this is definitely a oke. But fyi, Colbert is a registered Democrat. So maybe he'd vote Obama for real.

Maybe? It's more like for sure he will vote for Obama!
07:49 AM on 10/31/2008
Anyone who writes biting satire as well as Colbert does is definitely a Democrat. It takes brains to do what he does- Re-thugs are short on that commodity.
10:15 PM on 10/30/2008
Colbert is so funny, and I agree with him: McC should endorse Obama!
04:21 PM on 10/31/2008
Now that would be a maverick move that could get him some votes. Might also get him some rally attendants in Ohio who are over the age of 18 and weren't forced by the school system to sit through his boring speech.

I needed this laugh. Thank you.. What a funny guy. Yes if McCain endorsed Obama he would look 1/2 smart. Unfortunately the other 1/2 would look insane. I love the part about running the combine at the new National Farm collective. Hilarious. I will be in line looking for a job there too.

Yeah...um...I mean...this article is being facetious, right ?

Steven Colbert "did the only sensible thing a prominent conservative egotist could do...? "

This is a joke...right ?

....because anyone who actually thinks Colbert is ...conservative....is surely the, um....

....dullest tool in the shed, shall we say.....

(hey, I just noticed...the author of this article didn't give themselves a by-line...interesting...)
09:53 PM on 10/30/2008
yes. definitely a joke.

Who wrote the intro to this? Kind of numb to satire, eh?

Jeezum, Colbert is one of the smartest masters of satire to come along in a long time. His schtick is directly a smack at Bill-O, and is unbelievably funny if you know what you're listening too.

Really, do you (whoever wrote the lead in for this post) think he's serious??

For the rest of you commenters who do get it, this is such great stuff! America does need more Stephen Colberts. I refer, as others do, to the correspondents dinner with the tribute to Bush. A historic document. A mastery of damning with funny praise!
10:48 AM on 10/31/2008
The intro itself is satirical. The author is assuming that almost everyone is familiar with Colbert's brand of humor and is giving the piece the "seriouness" it deserves.
