Washington Post:

WITH THE presidential campaign clock ticking down, Sen. John McCain has suddenly discovered a new boogeyman to link to Sen. Barack Obama: a sometimes controversial but widely respected Middle East scholar named Rashid Khalidi. In the past couple of days, Mr. McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have likened Mr. Khalidi, the director of a Middle East institute at Columbia University, to neo-Nazis; called him "a PLO spokesman"; and suggested that the Los Angeles Times is hiding something sinister by refusing to release a videotape of a 2003 dinner in honor of Mr. Khalidi at which Mr. Obama spoke. Mr. McCain even threw former Weatherman Bill Ayers into the mix, suggesting that the tape might reveal that Mr. Ayers -- a terrorist-turned-professor who also has been an Obama acquaintance -- was at the dinner.

For the record, Mr. Khalidi is an American born in New York who graduated from Yale a couple of years after George W. Bush. For much of his long academic career, he taught at the University of Chicago, where he and his wife became friends with Barack and Michelle Obama. In the early 1990s, he worked as an adviser to the Palestinian delegation at peace talks in Madrid and Washington sponsored by the first Bush administration. We don't agree with a lot of what Mr. Khalidi has had to say about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over the years, and Mr. Obama has made clear that he doesn't, either. But to compare the professor to neo-Nazis -- or even to Mr. Ayers -- is a vile smear.

So basically MCCAIN and PALIN if you AINT WHITE YOU AINT RIGHT is that the point that you are trying to get across. If people vote do to these racist beliefs and MCCAIN and PALIN are voted in office I hope you are happy when you are broke and on welfare because you are going to need it. Although I do not think that MCCAIN or PALIN are for those types of programs so you are going to be out of luck.

would someone pleeeeaaaasssee ask John McCain why he handed $450,000 to a guy he considers a "PLO spokesman"?

this simple fact keeps getting buried or omitted by the networks and the papers.

The answer is that he didn't "hand the guy" the money. It was not to promote the PLO, but to finance ELECTIONS IN GAZA/WEST BANK. Surely you are not against elections, are you?

The point is that McCain was "associated" with him.

That's the standard you guys are using for Obama, right?

Nice of you to hand out that benefit of the doubt to your dear el derl y candidate.
Glad you KNOW what his intentions were. Now is there a TAPE of this transaction so that we can all determine if that is the case?

Signed,

Perplexed

So hard facts are only hard facts when they pertain to Obama, any hard information pertaining to McCain isn't EXACTLY a fact. Now, let me write myself a memo to that effect so that I understand how the conservative thought process works.

Insinutations re: Obama= Hard facts.
Hard facts re: McCain do not EXACTLY = Hard facts.

Got it.

Does the GOP have anything else to offer other than lies, bigotry, and garbage smears? They're psychotic, yet dems are supposed to "reach out" to these nutjobs? If one meets them half way the average civility of the country will be reduced to mere crap. Is there any common ground between decent & reasonable people and these whack jobs whose values are crap?

This is a serious question. What does the future hold for a nation so replete with bigoted moral relativists claiming to have cornered the market on patriotism?

Sure:

1) The evidence from Kennedy, Reagan, and Bush43 that cutting taxes does spur an economy and that the average economic wellbeing benefits.
2) Tolerance for left-wing ideas. We don't like them, but we don't go around throwing hate speech at left-wingers or fabricating stories about their daughter's pregnancies, etc.
3) Real patriotism, wherein we actually do care about the welfare of the country at large.
4) A lot of us like NASCAR races.
5) The recognition that refusing to build nuke plants and drill for our own oil endangers the country by giving money and power to countries who do not have our interests at heart.
6) We support the troops by supporting them, not opposing them or handicapping them.
7) We tolerate websites such as this without trying to shut them down.

Face it, friend. Moderate Republicans are leaving this sinking vessel. They are sick of the distortion of fact that has been John McCain's daily companion during this entire campaign. He is an embarassment. HIs campaign is an embarassment, His running mate is an embarassment. His spokespeople are embarassments.

I watched this insidious stuff done by Nixon in 1960 in the Jewish neighborhood where i grew up. There is nothing new here. Same old nastiness. The Jews aren't buying this time. The Republican party is, after the last 30 plus years of divisive, , mean-spirited political opportunism going to need to get back to the things that made it a great party.
They don't have much time.

If you think that the junk you are spouting on ths website isn't "hate speech" you are mistaken. And I work with lots of Republicans in a very conservative field. There's plenty of hate speech to go around. So spare us the piety.

This is an "ALL OUT WAR by the RICH" for FE@R of Losing Tax Breaks that can RUIN their $3 Million Parties and $100 million paintings and $300 million homes!

Tax Breaks Obama wants to give to the Middle Class!

Obama SAYS he wants to give breaks to the middle class NOW, to get elected. He has said in the past that he cares nothing about the suburbs and he went to a church for 20 years which eschews "middleclassness." This doesn't square well with current statements.

One suspects Obama is a man who favors not the middle class, but who merely hates the rich--other than himself and his friends. It's OK for THEM to get rich. It's a class warfare game and all to get elected.

John McCain is either far richer than Obama, when you count his wife's wealth, or he is a "kept man" , if you don't. Either way, you don't have much of an argument there.

You are so filled with anger that you don't even make sense any longer. Go to the Drudge Report and vent.

What are these repugnicans afraid of? Discent and discussion are the corner stones of our country... buit it seems to them.. it is my way or the highway... So much for the "Big Tent" party....

Friggin scary.

Is McCain so weak that he can't have a conversation with someone who he disagrees with without being influenced by the person to change his mind? Come on! This is just ridiculous!

Palin Faces More Trouble Over 'Troopergate'

Sarah Palin faces another likely setback in an investigation into whether she entangled her duties as Alaska governor in a family feud with her ex-brother-in-law, a state trooper, according to a senior state legislator.

Interesting that in the full article, Khalidi refers to this as an "idiot wind" and will just let it blow over. Not only is he smart, he also pretty much just described the McCain campaign for what it is: idiotic. Though I'll also add sad and pathetic to that.

Mr. McCain, if I may, allow me to recombobulate the words of one of America's greatest politicians, as I think you may need to hear this: "We have nothing to smear, but smear itself !". Thanks for sealing up this nomination for us on the last few days...keep up the good (bad) work!

After this election, and certainly before the next one, congress or the powers that be should really look at a way to reform/regulate the campaign process. I mean there should be some guidelines and limits to what campaigns should be able to do and not do. This process may cause a reevaluation of the U.S. Constitution but we have to remember the constitution was written centruies ago and the world has changed a whole lot since then; our founding fathers could not have imagined the technology that the world now has. There should be some written rule that families of the candidate are off limits--unless the candidate brings them into the process. These 527 or 547 groups-or whatever they are called--should not be able to use smear tactics to swift boat campaigns. Also, there should be time limits put on how long a campaign should last. I know we as Americans have freedom of speech but there should be limits. I think in some countries they already have some campaign regulations in place--so much for the U.S being the most developed country.
