Washington Post:

WITH THE presidential campaign clock ticking down, Sen. John McCain has suddenly discovered a new boogeyman to link to Sen. Barack Obama: a sometimes controversial but widely respected Middle East scholar named Rashid Khalidi. In the past couple of days, Mr. McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have likened Mr. Khalidi, the director of a Middle East institute at Columbia University, to neo-Nazis; called him "a PLO spokesman"; and suggested that the Los Angeles Times is hiding something sinister by refusing to release a videotape of a 2003 dinner in honor of Mr. Khalidi at which Mr. Obama spoke. Mr. McCain even threw former Weatherman Bill Ayers into the mix, suggesting that the tape might reveal that Mr. Ayers -- a terrorist-turned-professor who also has been an Obama acquaintance -- was at the dinner.

For the record, Mr. Khalidi is an American born in New York who graduated from Yale a couple of years after George W. Bush. For much of his long academic career, he taught at the University of Chicago, where he and his wife became friends with Barack and Michelle Obama. In the early 1990s, he worked as an adviser to the Palestinian delegation at peace talks in Madrid and Washington sponsored by the first Bush administration. We don't agree with a lot of what Mr. Khalidi has had to say about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over the years, and Mr. Obama has made clear that he doesn't, either. But to compare the professor to neo-Nazis -- or even to Mr. Ayers -- is a vile smear.

Good of WaPo to denounce it all, but do we really believe that your typical LIV (Low Information Voter) who actually buys the JM/SP cr@p 1) reads WaPo (or any newspaper), or 2) knows what "ad hominem" means?

Sorry to sound so............. &litist, but it's true!

4 more days, "my friends" , but only if we VOTE!!!

Go Obama/Biden!

Something I picked up on the conservative blogs....

...now they are saying (I have no idea if this is true) that Ayers dedicated a book he wrote to the assassin of RFK. Sirhan Sirhan, among 99 other people. So now they are saying that Obama is "closely linked" to RFK's assassin. Which you know, I'm SURE Obama knew about, if true.

Pretty much the same thing as they have been doing with Ayers, they're trying to make it seem like Obama, despite being a small child at the time, was somehow involved in the RFK association, or at the very least was friends with Sirhan Sirhan.

Unfortunately, I do not believe that there is any hope for these people. They do not care to educate themselves and prefer instead to dwell in hateful rumors and innuendo. There is not much we can do about them. Lets concentrate instead on reaching those who are open to learn.
Oh and before the next big election comes around, lets concentrate on making our educational system one that will teach our citizens to think critically and for themselves.

They are the equivalent of the old time witch hunters. Irrational and gripped by mass hysteria. Afraid of people that don't fall in line with their narrow line of thinking.

A few minutes ago I followed a link to a right leaning story at the NY Post and briefly looked at the comments. The 3rd one suggested all "us" liberals should be blindfolded and shot on the spot.

Needless to say I left right away. I have found that it is always like that on the right wing sites. Never seen anyone advocating violence here towards them. We usually wish them better education not violent death.

Obama sure has the experience with a wide variety of people and world views to make him an excellent world leader. Obama has balance and we need that so much right now in these trying times. This story gives me more confidence in him than ever! McCain gave Khalidi money and is now back stabbing him. We can't have a president who is so self-serving. He even dumped his first wife. He would sell us out in a minute.

wow- well said- I agree- we work with people all the time who do not share our views, but that doesn't mean they are bad people. and not every one has to agree with the israelies- some disagreement is necessary to see what you are missing, and that is what is important

Please! Get people like this off the national stage and keep them relegated to congregating in cold dark corners of abandoned buildings.

First, I really wasn't sure until last night that Joe the Plumber was part of the McCain-Palin dog-and-pony show, and then when I watched Countdown last night I knew, yes, it's a fact -- he's official. First, Yikes!

Then, of course, there is the Khalidi issue, which is priceless. Obama is definitely the new Kevin Bacon with six degrees of separation. My goodness, and McCain's involved there, too. He gave Khalidi's organization $448,000 and change, and I believe there were some other contributions, too. This was on Countdown and, I believe, here also.

These vile smears are put out there for people who just see names and listen to sound bites and do absolutely no research to get to the truth of the matter. We just have to hope that these types of voters cannot push McCain over the top.

I continue to hope that on November 5th we get to send McCain back to Arizona and Moosey back to Alaska, and we can put this behind us as one big joke. So much is ugly, but let's face it, there's also a lot to laugh hysterically over.

The republicans, it seems, would rather we accept our "knowledge" from Sam, er ah, Joe the er, ah, plumber (not) and Sarah the er, ah, governer (20mos. already accused of abuse of power), rather than educate ourselves by opening our eyes to the obvious attempt to hood wink the undereducated. Vote people like your lives depended on it!!

I'm baffled as to why JTP is getting so much attention. It was clear from the outset that he was a dyed in the wool Republican, so why is it considered so astonishing that his views are fully in line with McCain and that he agrees with him on almost anything and not with Obama?

Also...how ordinary is someone who now has a full PR consulating team following him everywhere, an agent, is writing a book and wants to run for Congress?

For someone who was whining about the press attention at the start of his 'fame', he's sure eating it up now. Seems it's all gone to his head some. I think he's about to get a rude awakening come Wednesday - when McCain will kick him to the kerb when he's no longer of any use to him and the public will turn to the next 15 minute wonder to gain public notoriety. Bye bye, Joe!

"Mr. Khalidi is an American born in New York who graduated from Yale a couple of years after George W. Bush. For much of his long academic career, he taught at the University of Chicago, where he and his wife became friends with Barack and Michelle Obama."

So "real" Americans must NEVER be seen socializing with REAL Americans of Arab descent???

I strongly criticized McCain's FEIGNED attempt to correct a "confused" woman in his crowd. And here's why ...

She began by saying that "Obama can't be trusted" ... to which McCain shook his head YES? ... as he leaned in closer to hear more... She then said that "Obama's an Arab" ... to which McCain decided he'd better grab the microphone away, to say "Obama's not an Arab ... he's a decent family man" ...

The FACT that McCain AGREED that "Obama can't be trusted" ... the FACT that McCain IMPLIED that Americans of Arab DESCENT are not DECENT ... sounds rather ANTI-American ... to ME!!!

I can't imagine ANY American of ARAB descent voting for MCCAIN/PALIN!!! (And this ANTI ARAB ATTITUDE of his & Palin's won't help to win the hearts & minds of the Iraqis, whose sovereign country OUR COUNTRY INVADED and OCCUPY INDEFINITELY!)

If John McCain were to actually be elected on Tuesday,I would find myself missing George Bush,,,and that's the saddest thing I could say about who McCain has become. He has totally lost any moral compass,if he ever had one.

We MUST be there on November 4th for Barack Obama ... so that he can be there for us thereafter!

Having been in Hyde Park (home of the University of Chicago), I can tell you it's a very diverse place with people of differing opinions. This includes conservative opinions as well. It is not surprising that Obama would be acquainted with all kinds of people in that community. McCain chooses to ignore that and practice the traditional republican smear and fear politics.

It depends. If the conversation is in the Kansas heartland, it's very American. But if the conversation is in NYC or Boston or San Francisco it would be decidedly un-American.

You know, Obama once ate a sandwich in a cafe sitting next to a man who made a joke in 1985 about the se.x life of circus midgets.... think the McCain camp will now try to pin an anti-disabled label to him too?

It is often said that power corrupts. Perhaps it would be better said that it is the pursuit of power that corrupts. It is hard to believe that there is an audience for this kind of crap.

Let's see, yesterday we read the story about the Navy covering up for a possible McCain incident where a person may have lost their life and today we have the media covering up for Obama in yet another so called questionable association. Now I believe that rules governing public information for the average citizen should in fact apply for our candidates, but if we are to dredge up every acquaintance that candidates meet, we will never hear about issues. The ole' saying that "politics makes strange bed fellows" is true. Can we please stick to the actual issues facing our country and her citizens? This Character assassinations are out of hand in all political arenas'. These stunts are the politics we want to cast aside.

Do your research, Tiggy. The media isn't covering anything up. They're the ones who brought out McCain's hefty financial ties to Khalidi. The whole thing is ridiculous. As far as sticking to the issues, Obama has been sticking to the issue. McCain is the one not sticking to the issues.

Jesus was guilty of associating with a wide variety of people too and of course in Christianity getting mad about this is seen as being very wrong. Jesus is an example of having many types of friends. I bet in other faith traditions there are also warnings against acting like an angry mob and being insular.
