Washington Post:

WITH THE presidential campaign clock ticking down, Sen. John McCain has suddenly discovered a new boogeyman to link to Sen. Barack Obama: a sometimes controversial but widely respected Middle East scholar named Rashid Khalidi. In the past couple of days, Mr. McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have likened Mr. Khalidi, the director of a Middle East institute at Columbia University, to neo-Nazis; called him "a PLO spokesman"; and suggested that the Los Angeles Times is hiding something sinister by refusing to release a videotape of a 2003 dinner in honor of Mr. Khalidi at which Mr. Obama spoke. Mr. McCain even threw former Weatherman Bill Ayers into the mix, suggesting that the tape might reveal that Mr. Ayers -- a terrorist-turned-professor who also has been an Obama acquaintance -- was at the dinner.

For the record, Mr. Khalidi is an American born in New York who graduated from Yale a couple of years after George W. Bush. For much of his long academic career, he taught at the University of Chicago, where he and his wife became friends with Barack and Michelle Obama. In the early 1990s, he worked as an adviser to the Palestinian delegation at peace talks in Madrid and Washington sponsored by the first Bush administration. We don't agree with a lot of what Mr. Khalidi has had to say about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over the years, and Mr. Obama has made clear that he doesn't, either. But to compare the professor to neo-Nazis -- or even to Mr. Ayers -- is a vile smear.

Those who still support McBush have to ask themselves a simple question: what's McCains' plan to fix the economy, healthcare and foreign policy? They will quickly find out that either the plan doesn't exist or it's a continuation of Bush's bankrupt policies or against what Obama proposes.
McCain web site's healthcare page is all about Obama. The McCain campaign has spent most of its time making a negative case for Barack Obama, instead of a positive case for itself.

Those who still support McCain will get the country they deserve, if he wins.

Unfortunately, the rest of us will also get the country they deserve.

Yes but Joe the Plumber legal name is not Joe, nor is he the plumber.... so.... if I write him in, the vote won't count.

It is a darn shame that individuals who think with an open mind and are unafraid to contemplate different perspectives to issues are set-up as hobgoblins in campaigning, as appears to be the case in this matter with Khalidi. It is transparent McCarthyism at its self-serving worst and I am glad the WP didn't mince words in its assessment of the issue as a "vile smear".

Khalidi seems to have written the postscript for the entire McCain campaign however: "Idiot Wind".

What is so ridiculous about the McCain attacks is that they make no sense.
Obama is a socialist (but then McCain admits he is not) and "pals around" with neo-Nazis?
Doesn't McCain understand the total idealogical contrdiction in this? One's far left the other as far right.
How can this be credible?
He and his campaign are without any credibility or any ideas or positions of merit.
Go away and stop insulting people's intelligence.

It's the same as trying to infer that Obama is a Muslim, yet they talk about him spending 20 years in the pews of a Christian church!!!

Funny isn't it....sort of like those folks who say they won't vote for him because he's black, yet ignore the fact that his Mom is white! Mind boggling

The Republican smear campaign is blowing up in their ugly face. So what do they do? Redouble their efforts in the same wrong direction. Its as if George Bush (failure in chief) is running the campaign. Very soon, we will witness the death of the loathsome Republican party. R.I.P. Amen.

The party of the mentally ill... The self-mutilators supporting whackjobs for high office...

Are on the slow march forward, every step bringing them closer to a locked psychiatric ward.

He will never be my president!!! He can steal the election, but how many of you would ever view McCain as a president?

He will start out with lower approval ratings that Bush left with!
