Washington Post:

WITH THE presidential campaign clock ticking down, Sen. John McCain has suddenly discovered a new boogeyman to link to Sen. Barack Obama: a sometimes controversial but widely respected Middle East scholar named Rashid Khalidi. In the past couple of days, Mr. McCain and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin, have likened Mr. Khalidi, the director of a Middle East institute at Columbia University, to neo-Nazis; called him "a PLO spokesman"; and suggested that the Los Angeles Times is hiding something sinister by refusing to release a videotape of a 2003 dinner in honor of Mr. Khalidi at which Mr. Obama spoke. Mr. McCain even threw former Weatherman Bill Ayers into the mix, suggesting that the tape might reveal that Mr. Ayers -- a terrorist-turned-professor who also has been an Obama acquaintance -- was at the dinner.

For the record, Mr. Khalidi is an American born in New York who graduated from Yale a couple of years after George W. Bush. For much of his long academic career, he taught at the University of Chicago, where he and his wife became friends with Barack and Michelle Obama. In the early 1990s, he worked as an adviser to the Palestinian delegation at peace talks in Madrid and Washington sponsored by the first Bush administration. We don't agree with a lot of what Mr. Khalidi has had to say about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict over the years, and Mr. Obama has made clear that he doesn't, either. But to compare the professor to neo-Nazis -- or even to Mr. Ayers -- is a vile smear.

The lack of quality in how Mcc has chosen to run his campaign is how his presidency will be. It's it funny that someone who always says "he knows how to ..." doesn't have a clue to how to run a campaign. Forget about his lack of judgment in picking P@lin, just look at how unprepared, lazy, undisciplined and inexperienced Mcc is. I don't understand why no one ever points out these qualities in Mcc. Mcc finished his run for the nomination ahead of Sen. O.b.ama, yet he wasted his time doing absolutely nothing in preparing his campaign. He wasn't even doing his job as a senator, which has been shown by his absence. At a time like this we don't need a lazy leader who can't foresee what may lie ahead with a let me try this and see if it works attitude that has no actual bearing on the situation other than drama. Mcc has shown us that he can't even stay focused on one topic without jumping onto another with his ever changing slew of character assassinations that only highlight his own character flaws. He's not even disciplined enough to check facts or remember his own past, because each and every time he tries a smear one of his own is lurking in the closet that brings into question who he really is. Is the experience you are looking for in a president that will have the responsibility to execute decisions pertaining to our lives?

Wonderfully said. Your comments would be great to send in as a "letter to the editor". McCain is willing to win by "any means necessary". In all that McCain has done, does he believe that he and Palin would be well received as president and veep? McCain will have to put so much back together before he can lead. He will not be trusted.

What a big bunch of truth in what you are saying.
Being loyal to a party is one way of looking at some who vote for Mac, but what happened to being loyal to ones own country?
Let's face it, J.T. Plumber is doing as good of job as Mac is. Sarah is doing a better job attracting more potential voters.
If Mac wins, we may just be finished as a nation.

If Mac wins, what job of high esteem would J.T. Plumber hold? A McCain/Palin administration would be humorous ... if it wasn't so HORRENDOUS!!!

Exactly. If one were to lay the two campaigns side by side, remove the names and party affiliations, 99 out of 100 people in a focus group would choose the Obama campaign as the much superior one.

The Obama/Biden campaign has been ultra-organized, disciplined, focused, on message, substantive, and inclusive.

The McCain campaign has been disorganized, erratic, undisciplined, lacking substance, gimmicky, divisive, and pandering to the basest human elements of fear, racism, and hate.

This race should be no contest.

For those of you who have been in the US military you know how arrogant and condescending some commisioned officers can be to enlisted and NCO's. John M c cain was one of these type officers.

Why has there been not ONE former POW stood up in defense of him? Because they know what kind of sleazeball he truly is.

And look how he treats veterans of today? Voting against EVERY bill for them.

Wake up people. This guy is pure DIRT!!

I have to ask you and everyone like you a question. How does it feel to represent everything that is old, ugly, and bigoted in this country? After Obama is elected, and turns this country around, then I'm hopeful that the "Fear and smear" crowd will once again return to the backwoods cabins, and militia compounds they once occupied before being given a platform by the republican party.

Obama has been consistent and on message about his proposals, telling people who he is and what he plans to do as President, while McSame/Palin devote 100% of their time telling people that Obama is hiding something and can't be trusted. They never say how they are going to fix things, only that they will fix things and they can be trusted because they are not like Obama. They talk in circles, telling us why we shouldn't vote for Obama and never telling us why we should vote for them other than because they are not Obama.

I'm tired of them always saying that Obama won't answer their questions!!! He's answered, they just don't like the answer!!! So they keep acting like he's hiding something -- even though anyone can go on his website and see exactly how he feels about every issue and what he plans to do with a presidency. He's an open book!

Nice of WaPo to speak out on this.
But remember, the very people who "buy" this hateful drivel are the "low information voters" for whom newspapers and other sources of credible information don't exist.

That's one reason the polls don't reflect what SHOULD BE a 30% spread in Obama's favor.

If everyone weighed the FACTS (rather than the blatantly false accusations made by the M/P and other Rethug campaigns and their surrogates in the media), then it would be "no contest".

You are so wrong. You would like to believe everybody who is concerned about the radical associations are "low information" voters, but that simply is not true.

We are not all a bunch of mindless idiots or people lacking in intelligence. And it's very hard to get the facts when the press is all out rooting for your candidate and therefore will not investigate some of these chilling relationships.

In Tampa they are now looking for the Republican party election office guy to resign for some disgusting email. They have been been knocked down now to the point where their true motivations are comming to the surface. All along it was suspected but denied. Now that anxiety and despiration have taken hold as they fear their fall from power, the closet racist/small minded thinkers have exposed their true nature.

After 3 days, 95 percent of the population will have forgotten, that there have ever been those McCain-smears, when they are not reiterated anymore in the MSM.

And for the last 5 percent, there's the ATF, FBI and Secret Service. Those last five percent are "known knowns" to the security services.

No, honestly: Once those smears stop, I am not concerned about BO's safety any more.

Their strategy: Deflect, deflect, deflect!

This morning on Morning Schmoe, they had a clip of one of their people going to New York with a McCain t-shirt and having Obama supporters tell them they don't want a McCain t-shirt. Joe kept saying that democrats are angry and that they feel superior!

I have an Obama bumper sticker on my car. The other day, someone honked their horn loudly at me. I checked to see if the light had changed; it hadn't. Again, the horn.

I looked behind me. Two women in the car behind me pointed to by back bumper and gave me emphatic "thumbs up". Receiving their appreciation was nice, but initially scared the crap out of me. I'd hate to think of what it would be like on the receiving end of negative feedback.

All these personal connections attacks got me thinking. The six degrees game.... It must work with politicians too....

I've yet to find anyone who is completely and utterly, 100% percent behind any one particular party or politician. Most of us agree with some things one side says or does, and don't agree with others. But on balance, we cast our vote to the people who we feel would best look after, and out for us and ours. It would be seriously unlikely - and I think, unhealthy - if we agreed with every single thing another person thought, did or said.
And I feel that that's why the crowds that the Palin/McCain ticket pander to are the most worrying of all....

Why isn't McCain talking about what Obama said in that 30 minutes? Why isn't he talking about how his tax plans will help those families Obama spotlighted? Because he knows they won't!

Why is he bringing up some guy that Obama had a friendship with? And is McCain telling us that we can't be friends with someone who has a different point of view than we do? How is that a bipartisan attitude? This guy didn't bomb anyone or incite violence or even divisiveness in America. He's a US citizen and last I knew had the right to his opinion and the right to state his opinion.

So my take is, that he's looking at everyone Obama ever spoke with that has a different opinion, and is trying to somehow connect that person to terrorism, welfare, socialism, or Godlessness! Thank God he only has 4 more days of this crap!!!

My friends, the immensity of the gap in intellectual capacity and curiosity between these two candidates becomes more obvious every day. In fact, and I know it is heresy to say this, one might conclude that even George W. Bush is more enlightened than McCain, and that a McCain presidency could actually be worse than Bush's. No small matter.

This election is clearly the quintessential test of the American voter's capacity to get it wrong. It will also be an indicator of just how many Americans actually "think" about who and what they are voting for. A good many don't.

It is beyond doubt that any thinking and rational person must appreciate the vastly different futures for America that these men represent. The question is - are the LIV's - that is, low information voters- sufficient in number to vote McCain into the White House. The religious and political right wingers are not enough. It will require the aid of the lazy and ignorant LIV's.

Bottom line is, we all know some of these peop[le, folks that just so harried with life, in general, that they can't be bothered to stay informed. Although you disrespect them for their laziness and rightfully so, get over it and do what you can to help them get to the polls and get it right. Your future depends on it, you betcha.
