Boehner: Obama "Chicken Shit" For Voting Present

House minority leader John Boehner's spokesman confirms the accuracy of this quote, from an Ohio student newspaper:

"Now, listen, I've voted 'present' two or three times in my entire 25-year political career, where there might have been a conflict of interest and I didn't feel like I should vote," Boehner said. "In Congress, we have a red button, a green button and a yellow button, alright. Green means 'yes,' red means 'no,' and yellow means you're a chicken s***.

"And the last thing we need in the White House, in the oval office, behind that big desk, is some chicken who wants to push this yellow button."

To use another farm metaphor, House minority leader Boehner's nasty comments about Senator Obama's "present" votes in the Illinois State Senate are hogwash. Senator Obama has never ducked taking a strong stand on tough issues. In the Illinois Senate, a "present" vote is the same as a "no" vote. Why do state senators there vote "present" instead of "no"? Often, to signal that they support the bill in principle, but want an amendment before they can vote for it. Judge Abner Mikva, a former U.S. Congressman from Illinois who served l0 years in the Illinois House of Representatives, was a federal judge, and also was White House counsel to President Clinton, sets the record straight on this issue in his op-ed for "The New York Times", published in Feb. 2008. Thanks cutebunion, as anyone who has done even a modicum of their homework (before spouting off) KNOWS: this is SOP (standard operating procedure) in the Illinois State Legilslature, I mean voting "Present" = "NO" with the added emphasis that this legislation needs to go back to the drawing board for improvement.

Frankly I think this is preferable to holding your nose and voting for a highly flawed bill. Instead it forces everyone to make the bill better.

Voting yay or nay for lousy legislation (that most members haven't even read yet!) is simply lazy and encourages excessive petty partisanship.

Sorry Boehner...­I saw you at the press conferences with your republican coalition, while you stood firm on your NO vote, you did not offer a viable alternative. I would have voted for the Party that came up with a better solution, but the republican naysayers did NOT! They passed up a GREAT opportunity to put forward better ideas, but sadly, they have none, nor did they seek any. Their homework on the economy left them looking like the jerks they are......B­oehner included. At the end of the day...all he had was rhetoric!
