Cleland

Max Cleland, the former Senator from Georgia who has taken on an active role helping Democrats campaign in that state, expressed concern that there would be a certain amount of "white backlash" to Barack Obama in the South.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Cleland lauded the Illinois Democrat for changing the political landscape in "fundamental" ways, through "massive new registration of voters, many of them African-American." But he warned that there would be "a certain white backlash against that, which... has always been a part of the politics of the South."

"There are [people] who react negatively when it looks like the government or the Democratic Party favors blacks over whites," he explained. But he offered that Obama had offset much of this by recruiting an unprecedented amount of supporters (including many newly registered voters) to his camp.

If anyone knows about the mindset of Southern voters, it is Cleland. The triple-amputee Vietnam veteran famously lost his reelection bid in 2002 under the weight of vicious smear tactics.

Cleland said he saw hints of that style of campaign in John McCain's current run for the presidency. But the fault, he argued, was not with Arizona Republican but rather with the people who surround him.

"Keep in mind, some of those people there are Karl Rovian protégées," he said. "That's what bothers me. I mean, if John McCain were to get rid of that stuff and become the John McCain of 2000 he would have a much better chance."

A widely respected voice on national security, Cleland did chastise McCain individually for one facet of his campaign: the choice of Sarah Palin as running mate. He "knows better," said the Georgia Democrat. He "wanted to go for Lieberman or Ridge as his V.P. -- both of which would have been very credible... [but] they were pro-choice and it was a threat by the right wing nutzos to disrupt the Republican convention that caused McCain to cave in and go with somebody that was -- in Karl Rovian terms -- good for cranking up the base. And it has become a disaster."

But Cleland's main diagnosis for the ills of the Republican ticket was clear. "I am sorry that John is going against the whirlwind that Bush has sown," he said.

Six years ago, Cleland faced a very different Bush whirlwind. During a his reelection bid for Senate, his Republican opponent (at the behest, he says, of the White House) ran ads that put his picture alongside Osama bin Laden. Combined with the governor's decision, that year, to take the Confederate emblem off the state flag, the Bush administration had all the wedge issues it needed to drive up the vote against him.

Flash-forward to today and the dynamics could not be more different. A massive wave of Democratic voters, a presidential campaign that has excited the base, and President Bush's dwindling popularity all have produced what was believed to be unthinkable: an opportunity for Obama to win the state and for Democratic candidate and fellow Vietnam vet Jim Martin to upset Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the man who beat Cleland back in '02. (The polls are very tight in that Senate race, though the consensus among those who have followed that contest is that Chambliss stands a good shot of pulling it out.)

"The fact that Obama is even close in Georgia -- like four points -- is a miracle," said Cleland. "It is unheard of. And who knows what will happen in terms of turnout. It could push him over the top, it could push Martin over the top. We have historic numbers in terms of registration, African-Americans and young people. We have not had that ever in terms of early voting, in terms of absentee voting."

Cleland, who blogged about the Georgia Senate race for the Huffington Post, said that there was no personal satisfaction or vindication he would take out of a Martin win. But he acknowledged that some people in the state have come to see the allegations made against him in 2002 as lies. "There is some regret out there," he said, "that I am not still in the United States Senate."

The main thing that bothers me about whites who vote along religeous or racial lines is the fact that they put morons (Bush, Palin) in office and when things go wrong they blame immigrants, foreigners, and minorities. The republican party as we know it (aka the American White Peoples Party, based on rally attendance) is losing it's dominance due to demographic shifts. They are going to have to change in order to survive.

Bryant, too many republicans are indeed dimwits. No arguement from me. However, when I was a young man (19 yrs old) we had a democratic president (Lyndon Johnson) and democratic-controlled senate and house. 61 democratic senators if memory serves me right. You know those dimwits got me full of shrapnel in a place called VietNam. Created a foreign policy that got 58,000 young men in my age bracket killed......Then in the 70's we had a guy named Jimmy Carter. A nice likable guy. He also had total control as far as a democrat-controlled congress and senate. Do you know most of my old pals had to move because unemployment was so bad here. And approaching double-digits nationally. And 21% inflation. Gas rationing and hostages taken overseas. Every tin-horn dictator taking their shots at us. My point: BOTH major parties have too many morins.........BTW, lightning hit me dead if this isn't a fact, but I'm registered as a democrat. Just letting you know.

We are about to find out what kind of people we Americans really are. Obama has staked his campaign on his belief in our goodness and decency. I sure hope we don't disappoint him, and ourselves.

Steamboat - this is a constant distortion piled on by the Republicans - it is not true that Obama voted present to avoid voting on any particular bill - rather this is a procedure in the Illinois Senate when a bill needs to have further discussion. Please get your facts straight!

Its there in state records and minutes to be seen...........BTW, wendy, how come nobody has yet refuted my FUZZY MATH concerns? Do YOU really think Barack can do everything he promises and still give you and me (95% he said) a tax-break?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:14 AM on 11/01/2008

Obama voted present 131 out of over 3000 votes. He was joined in his present votes by Republicans and Democrats. The procedure is common in that state, so unless you are well-versed in legislative procedural matters in the Illinois State Senate, best to not comment on that.

And I agree with you: Obama can not do everything in his plan and still give a tax break to 95% of Americans workers (he never said 95% of Americans). He certainly can't do it all. No president ever has. My sense is, and he has said, that he will prioritize. So maybe we'll only get to affordable health care for all and US-made fuel-efficient cars and he won't be able to, for example, give a $4000 scholarship to students, or double the size of the Peace Corps. Damn. We'll just have healthcare and a little energy independence. What a failure.

I live in Illinois. So why is it 'backlash' because I'm concerned about a guy who couldn't make a decision when he was a state senator here. Voting 146 times (a record) PRESENT rather then YES or NO. In January he has to make those tough decisions. He has the security and welfare of the American people at stake. None of this cordial Mr. Nice Guy who smiles, talks great,..... and takes up space.......Why is it 'backlash' when I ask, "what are his past achievements" to why he should be our president?.........Why is it 'backlash' if I doubt a guy is truthful when he says "I'll put 2 more brigades in Afghanistan, keep a peacetime contingent in Iraq, have a 90-day freeze on foreclosures which means we taxpayers pay those mortgages for that period, have a healthcare problem that all experts say will cost a minimum of #180 billion a year, put more money into education, entitlements, infrastructure, and foreign aid, and will give tax-breaks to corporations who don't go overseas, but on the other hand say the corporations will pay more and 95% of us get a tax-break. Didn't Al Gore have a name for all this---FUZZY MATH.

PS: and because I am a citizen of Illinois, why is it "backlash" when I ask, "why haven't our 2 US Senators (including Obama) gotten Illinois our fair-share?" I was a service officier for our local DAV Post. See, I'm a disabled war vet, also. Although I'm grateful I'm not a wheelchair victim like Max. Anyway, my state ranks 50th (last) in getting benefits and disability ratings for our vets. Were where you Barack? Why is it "backlash" when I ask, we're a big state, whose citizens pay higher taxes then others, where Cook County has thee largest sales tax in America (10 3/4th%), yet we rank 49th in state funding of education. Where did the money go? Hey, we have 2 democrat US Senators, a democrat governor, democrat control of both the state house and state senate, so why is it "backlash" if I have doubts?

I am sorry Steamboat that you neglected to point out that Bush was in office the last 8 years.

If you were so said being in Illinois, please move to Alaska or Arizona to see if those people would help you. They wanted to cut education funding, they wanted to cut taxes so don't think you will get more care as a vet if you move.

Afterall, you do have the rights to be pissed however you see it.

Between the two, me, a Texan, has just voted for Obama.

If you think John McCain would do a better job of getting veteran benefits for you then you need to go do some research into how he's voted against amendments that would increase vets benefits.

I live in Illinois too, buster, and I'm a Vet and John McCain is NO Vet's friend. You're just a bitter Republican. Move if you don't like Illinois. I'll stay, thank you very much!

Firstly, I'd like to thank you for serving our country, and I'm sorry that you were wounded. I hope you are receiving all the treatment you deserve and earned for your sacrifice.

I understand that a few people don't care to listen to your thoughts on Senator Obama's State Senate voting record and I would like to apologize on their behalf; they mean well, but frothy, spittle inflected arguments seldom convince people to look at another perspective, let alone the one that they're expunging.

That being said, I would like to say as a former resident of Illinois (I lived there for most of my life up until 2 years ago) to a current one, please look into the SPECIFICS of a public servant''s voting record before taking the word of another. I understand those 140+ "present" votes, along with Illinois's state ranking in benefits and disability for vets can leave a poor taste in your mouth, but consider this: sometimes there is not a plausible yes or no answer to a vote. Suppose a bill wanted to extend veteran benefits , but had a provision to cut benefits to police officers to pay for it; in one respect, it helps, but in another, it doesn't. Rather than choose between being "pro-crime" or "anti-veteran," would it make more sense to step back from the table and say "Give me a bill that's worth voting for and I will. Get this off my desk and revise it."

PLEASE DONATE TODAY to the Democratic challenger to Chambliss (R-acist).

Jim Martin is really close to taking the Senate seat. This race is definitely do-able.

Sometimes while reading posts I wonder where all these white people have been for the last twenty years. Perhaps on a different planet that did not include such noteworthy Americans such as Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, BB King, Quincy Jones, Oprah, Will Smith.... actually the list is just too long. The fact is much of our culture has changed really since Bill Cosby began to show white America what Black families really value... and lo and behold those values were consistent with their own. The young people today do not see race as pre-civil rights generations, they did not grow up with the same framework of racial divide as their parents and that is lifting this country out of a morass of misinformation and myths about race.
The future health of our economy and our planet requires everyone pulling together.
Obama 08!

You know, I am really tired of the argument that John McCain is somehow not responsible for his own campaign, especially the attempts to stir up hatred and fear. It goes something like this: 'It's not his fault, Carl Rove and crew took his campaign over, and he couldn't help it'

First off, I'll point out that we have been saying that for 8 years ... 'It's not that Bush was evil, he was just stupid and let Rove and Cheney use him as a puppet.'

McCain is a grown man. He is responsible for his campaign. If he let hate and fear-mongers take over the wheel (not to mention handing over his soul to the religious right by nominating someone completely unqalified as VP), then he needs to be held responsible for that.
