Cleland

Max Cleland, the former Senator from Georgia who has taken on an active role helping Democrats campaign in that state, expressed concern that there would be a certain amount of "white backlash" to Barack Obama in the South.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Cleland lauded the Illinois Democrat for changing the political landscape in "fundamental" ways, through "massive new registration of voters, many of them African-American." But he warned that there would be "a certain white backlash against that, which... has always been a part of the politics of the South."

"There are [people] who react negatively when it looks like the government or the Democratic Party favors blacks over whites," he explained. But he offered that Obama had offset much of this by recruiting an unprecedented amount of supporters (including many newly registered voters) to his camp.

If anyone knows about the mindset of Southern voters, it is Cleland. The triple-amputee Vietnam veteran famously lost his reelection bid in 2002 under the weight of vicious smear tactics.

Cleland said he saw hints of that style of campaign in John McCain's current run for the presidency. But the fault, he argued, was not with Arizona Republican but rather with the people who surround him.

"Keep in mind, some of those people there are Karl Rovian protégées," he said. "That's what bothers me. I mean, if John McCain were to get rid of that stuff and become the John McCain of 2000 he would have a much better chance."

A widely respected voice on national security, Cleland did chastise McCain individually for one facet of his campaign: the choice of Sarah Palin as running mate. He "knows better," said the Georgia Democrat. He "wanted to go for Lieberman or Ridge as his V.P. -- both of which would have been very credible... [but] they were pro-choice and it was a threat by the right wing nutzos to disrupt the Republican convention that caused McCain to cave in and go with somebody that was -- in Karl Rovian terms -- good for cranking up the base. And it has become a disaster."

But Cleland's main diagnosis for the ills of the Republican ticket was clear. "I am sorry that John is going against the whirlwind that Bush has sown," he said.

Six years ago, Cleland faced a very different Bush whirlwind. During a his reelection bid for Senate, his Republican opponent (at the behest, he says, of the White House) ran ads that put his picture alongside Osama bin Laden. Combined with the governor's decision, that year, to take the Confederate emblem off the state flag, the Bush administration had all the wedge issues it needed to drive up the vote against him.

Flash-forward to today and the dynamics could not be more different. A massive wave of Democratic voters, a presidential campaign that has excited the base, and President Bush's dwindling popularity all have produced what was believed to be unthinkable: an opportunity for Obama to win the state and for Democratic candidate and fellow Vietnam vet Jim Martin to upset Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the man who beat Cleland back in '02. (The polls are very tight in that Senate race, though the consensus among those who have followed that contest is that Chambliss stands a good shot of pulling it out.)

"The fact that Obama is even close in Georgia -- like four points -- is a miracle," said Cleland. "It is unheard of. And who knows what will happen in terms of turnout. It could push him over the top, it could push Martin over the top. We have historic numbers in terms of registration, African-Americans and young people. We have not had that ever in terms of early voting, in terms of absentee voting."

Cleland, who blogged about the Georgia Senate race for the Huffington Post, said that there was no personal satisfaction or vindication he would take out of a Martin win. But he acknowledged that some people in the state have come to see the allegations made against him in 2002 as lies. "There is some regret out there," he said, "that I am not still in the United States Senate."

I was sick when Max Cleland lost his reelection bid 4 years ago. It was all so unfair. I'm crossing my fingers that the Dem wins it back.

I miss Max. If it weren't a vote away from Martin defeating Saxby "Snake in the Grass" Chambliss, I'd write him in on my ballot!

Also, I agree that we need to stop seeing color, but the sad thing is that there are a lot of people who live a couple hours north and south of me that would still deny him service and those are the people who aren't just voters, but really kinda scary. Deliverance was a little outrageous, but there ARE still towns I drive straight through!

I hope that by Obama winning it will show the world, and the majority of Americans that we don't want race to be an issue anymore in this country. We're not African Americans, Irish Americans, Chinese Americans - just Americans.

Its not about voting for a black man for his supporters, but for the Republicans this is absolutely an election focused on race.

White Republicans are afraid of losing power, and losing control. Their means of control have been education and money. Keeping people poor and uneducated keeps them in control.

Why do you think education is never a republican priority? Why they avoid early childhood development - because it levels the playing field.

If we don't change our direction now, if we don't try to improve education and our country for everyone. We are doomed to live in an America run by McCain's and Palin's forever. Seriously, if this isn't the time for change - then when????

I thank God I came home in basically one-piece from VietNam. And feel for Max because he didn't. God bless him. However, there is no race issue in this campaign. Its the Obama folks and Obama himself who have brought up race. Even v. the Clinton's in the primaries. Making them look like racists when the truth is they don't have one racist bone in their body. 70% of the voters are going to be WHITE. So there is NO advantage to antagonizing one group of people who don't deserve this antagonizing this time around........As for keeping poor people uneducated. God helps those who also help themselves. We have a OVER 50% drop-out rate in the high schools of the major-cities of America. Detroit 20%, Baltimore 24%-----thats those who DO graduate. And guess what, all these cities are 100% DEMOCRATIC-CONTROLLED. No republicans. So stop with this white republican garbage.......I live in Illinois. Cook County has the highest sales tax in America, 10 3/4th %. A lottery, very high taxes that far exceed the national average. A large population. Two democratic US Senators, a democratic governor, a democratic-controlled state house and senate. The Chicago city govt. is ALL democratics. Cook County Commissionerds are ALL democratics. So explain to me why my state is 49th in funding education if the white republicans are the cause of ALL the problems? ..........I await your reply.

Sorry to disagree with Max Cleland, but mc is in charge of his campaign, and he has a choice when it comes to the people who surround him. He picked those rovian dregs when he saw he was going to lose, and he wanted the experts on dirty tactics to be on his side this time. He is completely responsible for EVERYTHING that is done in his name and for his benefit. He has a lot to be ashamed of, and win or lose, he will never live down this filthy campaign.

Obama will have our support and patience even after he is elected. He has made all his supporters own his plans, so a narrow-minded group of thugs can't sabotage anything even though they may try.

Give me reasons? I live in Illinois. Tell me why I should be enthused about a man who set a Illinois State Senate record by voting "present" 146 TIMES rather then 'yes' or 'no'. ....Tell me his great achievements as a state and/or US Senator? My state does NOT get back its fair share from the feds. My state is ranked 50th in benefits and disability ratings for its veterans who gave to their country. Despite my state's population and high taxes, we are 49th at funding education. This despite 2 democrat US Senators, democratic governor, and both a democratic-controlled state senate and state house. So give me reasons?

One fact that gives me hope across the board is that many, if not the majority, of newly registered voters are not only for Obama, but they are pretty much unpollable, since most of them use cell phones exclusively. It leaves a pro-Obama margin in all conventional land-line based polls that doesn't show up in the figures. That fuels my hope not only in an Obama win, but in an Obama landslide.

The landline-matter, as well as constantly under-polled young voters and newly registered voters, add up to an additional 4 (FOUR!) percent to the regular polls (according to http://www.fivethirtyeight.com - the article on this was published about 2 weeks ago).

Yes, you're right: There IS a substantial cushion - or a safety-margin - buit into the conventional polls for Obama.

I've been saying the cell phone thing for weeks also, along with caller ID, some calls don't get answered. If a person is lower income in this economy, they might have heavy creditor calls and don't pick up unknown or strange numbers.......but those people are voting big time!

I loved Max...he and my AA mother were friends, but he could have kept this!!!!

The weather will be nice in the Atlanta metro area Tuesday. My kids and I will be at the polls with folding chairs and bottles of water. If you voted early, I BEG you to take the day off (or the two hours allowed by most states) and do the same!!! Please bring whatever you need to get you through the wait, i.e. books, ipod, snack, meds, etc.. No matter what...STAY IN LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nov 4 - Partly Cloudy - 67°/49° (Go to www.weather.com and enter your zip code to check for the weather in you location. Do a 10-day outlook.)

GA early voters, check here to make sure your vote was counted!! http://www.sos.georgia.gov/elections/polllocator/PollLocator.aspx

From 2020 whites will be a minority in the USA, anyway.

Time to adapt to the future of this wonderful country.

And who could better take care for the transition of the USA into a free, multi-ethnic, colourfull country than Barack Obama?

Welcome to the 21st century, folks!

White people comprise 69.9% of US population as of 2000 census. African Americans 12%, Hispanic/Latino 12%. Long way to go before white folk are in the minority. It would be better to focus on the fact that we're all Americans. I have a dream that one day Americans will see socio-economic disadvantages before we see race. I think our problem is there are too many poor folk not getting what they need, regardless of their color. I'd like to see an expansion of the middle class and I think Obama's gonna bring it.

For those who want to use Rev. Wright as an issue remind them that Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell all said back in 2001 that the wrath of God has come down on this country with 9/11 and with aids. So Wright is really echoing what they said 7 yrs ago. Also, It was Pat Robertson who told their American audience that the US govt. should go to countries that don't like us and assassinate their leaders. So what you're hearing from Wright is basically the same things you head from Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and Rev. Hagee --so why is it different?

White backlash.....give me a break.
The Aryn Cult now known as the Republicn Party has been beating our butts for 8 years and you are concerned about a White Backlash if Obama is elected.
This isn't a game. It is our damn life.
Backlash? This White Boy is more than ready to come to the aid of Good and Right.
That is how we got here on the eve of completing a portion of the promse that is America.
By repelling that Culture of Hate.
