Cleland

Max Cleland, the former Senator from Georgia who has taken on an active role helping Democrats campaign in that state, expressed concern that there would be a certain amount of "white backlash" to Barack Obama in the South.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, Cleland lauded the Illinois Democrat for changing the political landscape in "fundamental" ways, through "massive new registration of voters, many of them African-American." But he warned that there would be "a certain white backlash against that, which... has always been a part of the politics of the South."

"There are [people] who react negatively when it looks like the government or the Democratic Party favors blacks over whites," he explained. But he offered that Obama had offset much of this by recruiting an unprecedented amount of supporters (including many newly registered voters) to his camp.

If anyone knows about the mindset of Southern voters, it is Cleland. The triple-amputee Vietnam veteran famously lost his reelection bid in 2002 under the weight of vicious smear tactics.

Cleland said he saw hints of that style of campaign in John McCain's current run for the presidency. But the fault, he argued, was not with Arizona Republican but rather with the people who surround him.

"Keep in mind, some of those people there are Karl Rovian protégées," he said. "That's what bothers me. I mean, if John McCain were to get rid of that stuff and become the John McCain of 2000 he would have a much better chance."

A widely respected voice on national security, Cleland did chastise McCain individually for one facet of his campaign: the choice of Sarah Palin as running mate. He "knows better," said the Georgia Democrat. He "wanted to go for Lieberman or Ridge as his V.P. -- both of which would have been very credible... [but] they were pro-choice and it was a threat by the right wing nutzos to disrupt the Republican convention that caused McCain to cave in and go with somebody that was -- in Karl Rovian terms -- good for cranking up the base. And it has become a disaster."

But Cleland's main diagnosis for the ills of the Republican ticket was clear. "I am sorry that John is going against the whirlwind that Bush has sown," he said.

Six years ago, Cleland faced a very different Bush whirlwind. During a his reelection bid for Senate, his Republican opponent (at the behest, he says, of the White House) ran ads that put his picture alongside Osama bin Laden. Combined with the governor's decision, that year, to take the Confederate emblem off the state flag, the Bush administration had all the wedge issues it needed to drive up the vote against him.

Flash-forward to today and the dynamics could not be more different. A massive wave of Democratic voters, a presidential campaign that has excited the base, and President Bush's dwindling popularity all have produced what was believed to be unthinkable: an opportunity for Obama to win the state and for Democratic candidate and fellow Vietnam vet Jim Martin to upset Sen. Saxby Chambliss, the man who beat Cleland back in '02. (The polls are very tight in that Senate race, though the consensus among those who have followed that contest is that Chambliss stands a good shot of pulling it out.)

"The fact that Obama is even close in Georgia -- like four points -- is a miracle," said Cleland. "It is unheard of. And who knows what will happen in terms of turnout. It could push him over the top, it could push Martin over the top. We have historic numbers in terms of registration, African-Americans and young people. We have not had that ever in terms of early voting, in terms of absentee voting."

Cleland, who blogged about the Georgia Senate race for the Huffington Post, said that there was no personal satisfaction or vindication he would take out of a Martin win. But he acknowledged that some people in the state have come to see the allegations made against him in 2002 as lies. "There is some regret out there," he said, "that I am not still in the United States Senate."

I'm a yankee who has lived in southern states for the past 10 years (South Carolina, Georgia, Texas) and I wouldn't have believed it unless I'd seen and experienced it, but yes................. there is still that backward hillbilly racist cr@p in certain parts of this country. It is truly disgusting.

I can't disagree with your experience---I grew up in Georgia and thought this was only our cross to bear. My career has since taken me all over the country hiring and supervising working people in many states. There is NO place where there is no bigotry. Ohio, Western PA, West Virginia, upstate New York, Northern California, Arizona, Arkansas, Michigan, Mass., Indiana, Nebraska---and more. I have neighbors in S. FL from Wisconsin, Indiana and New York, successful professionals dogmatically Christian, who are the vilest bigots and the most susceptible to political disinformation that you could imagine. You can see the same by looking back at the people attending the Palin rallies and the worst of those were in Ohio. Hatred toward "others" however they classified them was justified with platitudes about patriotism. It takes the cover of the political divisiveness of these candidates to bring them out from under the rocks.

I have undying respect for Cleland, also the victim of heinous lies and smears.

I am African American and I beg to differ, I think all this backlash talk is an insult to most white people.
Palin's base is just that base, racist, closed-minded and ignorant and does not represent "white" or conservative America.
Rational America will prevail!

I think it is smart to heed Mr. Cleland's warning. I have been working my @$$ off for Obama in the last couple of months and would like nothing more to see an Obama administration; voted early for him. But I fear what will happen on Nov. 5th after he does win. I read somewhere that gun sales have increased 8% in the last couple of months. I hope that civility will prevail.

I am not exactly sure what the term, "white backlash" means, but I do understand that there are people, even here in our *liberal* Pacific NW, who measure by color.

So many years ago, in reference to bigotry, I read the words, "see with blind eyes" - I don't remember where. Our next president is every color and no color, he will bring us together.

Who cares about color? Obama could be green, or blue and I would still be proud to vote for the most intelligent, articulate and compassionate leader this country has seen for decades....grow up America before we become a third world nation.

A LOT of Americans care about color...their fears have been fueled by the republicans with lies and scare tactics. Look to Pat Buchanan and what he did for Nixon to scare and incite white people. It still exists and to deny that will do nothing to end it. I continue to write MSNBC shows and complain about giving this horrid racist bigot any time on any show. Buchanan is done more harm to whites and blacks in this country than people know.

Cleland's a good guy but I disagree with him that McCain's campaign is not McCain's fault but, rather, the fault of the Rovians who've infiltrated his campaign staff. The buck stops with McCain. He could have said "No" to their assistance but he said "Yes". Another decision reflective of poor judgment and very weak leadership. Anybody think Obama would have allowed that to happen to his campaign?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:54 PM on 10/31/2008

I agree.

Cleland's probably echoing Biden's sentiment that McCain will regret this, that he "let" his campaign this ugly.

They pity him because McCain seems to have heart and to wants to do the right thing, but--and please excuse my soapbox--he time and again shows he's spineless and greedy, weak and power-lust. McCain continually gives in to temptation (gambling, infidelity, alcoholism, Keating favors, his notorious temper, etc.) and vacillates whichever way the wind blows.

And when he wants to get all Maverick-y and stand on his own, that's when he lurches, "Look, I can make impulsive decisions!" Crash, boom. Pilot error.

I voted in east cobb county. I stood in line with several hundred others for the three or so hours it took. If that was a republican crowd I will eat my shorts. I drive by the same line, Monday through today. it is always there, always that long and not once have I thought that it looked like, acted like, smaelled like , a republican group.
That is east cobb county georgia, newt country, bleeds red.

If eat cobb county goes then georgia has elected obama and i have to assume a majority democratic representation to DC.

If we do I would like to officially remove Georgia from the roles of "the south" as it represents bigots, hate or politicians like dole or chambliss and the lies that go with cowards like that.

5 of my white relatives who live in the Atlanta suburbs voted for Obama this week. Two of them are in their late 50s/early 60s. Georgia is by no means safely red.

VOTE!!!

Count me as dumbfounded when we have the most intelligent articulate politician who cares for ALL people in America to lead us, why ANY ONE would rule him out based on the color of his skin.

How shortsighted are we people? I am so sad, When I was in high school we had many race riots, between blacks and whites..... But that was in the SEVENTIES!

Have we really not moved forward in all that time?

Come on fellow citizens, lets elect the ONLY candidate who will work tirelessly to UNITE US. We need to pull together as ONE people to get through this economic mess we are facing.

Please vote for Barack Obama.

People need to vote early, check out the polling place, make sure the machines are working correctly and not sending Obama's votes to McCain.
"The Help America Vote Act"--2002, was a 2.8 billion $ venture.
Why have the best and largest number of machines not shown up in minority or Democratic districts to accomadate the largest number of voters.
There are 55 million registered Republican voters, seventy-two million registered Democratic voters(more democrats now, with this particular election--Democrats greatly exceed Republicans).
Why the imbalance in the districts that should be getting more voting machines and polling places? Racism, election fraud, attempting to purge large numbers of Democratic voters from voting?

This country is so divided and emotions so high that I could see riots breaking out after an Obama win, especially in the South. I wouldn't wish it on our great Country, but I could see it happening.....especially after reading some of the vitriol on other sites not so friendsly to the idea of an Obama administration.

I must agree. Here in Dallas,Tx. we go red and when I tell you that the white ppl here are very upset just thinking about an Obama Presidency. I have a YES WE CAN key chain and I'm almost afraid sometimes to let it be shown. When I do, I get alot of stares and snickers. It's something about the south that really makes me fear an Obama Presidency. However, regardless of my fears, I voted last saturday and the lines here go out the door and into the streets. Amazing!

Curious though, to see if Tx will remain red, I hope not!

GO BARRY, GO BLUE!

It's a dollar short and a day late. The die is cast. McCain has taken the sleazy path. He'll leave the race without honor.
