Dole's Challenger Up In Polls After "Godless" Ad

U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan launched legal action against Sen. Elizabeth Dole's "godless" attack ad Thursday as a chorus of critics joined her in accusing Dole of crossing the line with the controversial TV spot.

A new Rasmussen poll, taken Wednesday after the Dole ad began airing, showed Hagan ahead of Dole 52-46. A new survey by Civitas, taken Monday through Wednesday, showed Hagan up by a smaller margin.

He taught biblical studies at two NC Christian affiliated colleges and met Hagan teaching her in a bible study class.

God (at least according to Jesus) didn't have a very high opinion of any kind of money, or those who devote themselves to accumulating it. "Lay ye not up treasure on earth, where moths and rust corrupt and thieves break in and steal, but rather lay ye up treasure in heaven, for where your treasure is there will your heart be also."

That would be any paper U.S. currency printed before 1957. It's only the w!ngnuts who claim America is a Christian country, the founding fathers would be appalled to see how they've corrupted their intentions.

Hey, I am all for Hagan and I am against n@sty campaign ads. But what is this nonsense with politicians suing over n@sty campaign ads? It makes the aggrieved candidate look like a wuss. Hagan gave Dole a KO punch with her 10 Commandments counterattack. She won the round and does not need to run to a judge.

I'm not one who makes excuses for lying and liars -- not even in politics. Why? Because lying is immoral. And because "the informed citizen is the cornerstone of democracy" (W. Wilson). That information must be FACTUAL, TRUE if the democracy is not to be corrupted, subverted, and destroyed.

And then there's lying that's even beyond the lowest of anti-Christian hatred, such as Dole's usual smears, and cannot be countenanced. This is ont of those instances which REQUIRE law suit to constrain Dole, who is clearly unwilling or unable to restrain her hatefulness to within adult, responsible bounds -- if she must express her anti-Christian hatefulness at all.

I'm an agnositc, and hold no special brief for "religion" which is shoved in everyone else's face without regard for the rudeness of doing so. But I'm with Hagan on this one: Dole has falt-out defamed a person who is clearly, and known to be, none of that Dole is alleged. Dole needs to be sued into the ground, and not only as precedential warning to all other Republican haters/bigots.

It is ABSOLUTELY libel per se to claim somebody is an atheist when they are not, and courts have so ruled. However as a candidate in a political race Hagan is pretty much libel-proof.

Lawsuits are sometimes the only way to keep these kind of things in check. The Republicans are getting way out of hand with slurs and innuendos. Actually, a class action suit on behalf of the voting public wouldn't be out of order.

Tough campaign ads are one thing; outright vicious lies are another. Hagan doesn't have a chance in court because political free speech enjoys almost absolute protection, but by going to court she underlines the point that the ads are lying and slimy.

True to form for Dole. When she was Secretary of Transporation, she fought the ban on airlines allowing smoking. Gee could it be that she and her hubby Bob, have taken 100,000s from the tobacco lobby; when she was Director of the Red Cross, she left that in a shambles, and when she was Secretary of Labor, she fought against increasing the mininium wage. From what I gather these ads have a long history of working in North Carolina. This is why they are using them. Mix in the obvious effect Obama is having on the ground and Dole must have crossed over into the "whatever it takes" mode, classic Republican tactics, no shame, no apologies, no quarter given, none expected. If there had ever been a difference in their tactics one could ponder the idea that this is a shame, but the truth is the Republicans have made this their way of hanging on to power no matter the cost. Politics in this country must somehow move beyond tactics that belong to the Reconstruction era, not 21st centurt America.

There are encouraging signs that these tactics are not working anymore. The more vicious McCain's attacks have gotten, the further behind he has fallen. And now Dole has fallen further behind Hagan as the backlash from these slimy ads hits home.

I am deeply disappointed in Senator Elizabeth Dole for allowing this anti-God advertisement to air. She has always impressed me as a true lady. Liddy Dole has sunk her campaign and her future in the mire of faith-based politics. In the US Constitution, there are the words that there is no religious test for political service at the federal level. To suggest that another candidate is associated with a group that espouses atheism is unAmerican, and shows a very unChristian attitude toward the rival.

This also demonstrates the blatant hatred certain fundamentalist religionists have for anyone other than themselves. We do not need fanatics like Mrs. Dole serving in the public trust. We need people who respect the religion or irreligion of other Americans. It was Jesus who said. "Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's" Federal politics is concerning Caesar. Let us not try to create a theocracy in America. In Iran and Saudi Arabia there are theocracies. Let's not take their lead.
