McClatchy:

U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan launched legal action against Sen. Elizabeth Dole's "godless" attack ad Thursday as a chorus of critics joined her in accusing Dole of crossing the line with the controversial TV spot.

...

A new Rasmussen poll, taken Wednesday after the Dole ad began airing, showed Hagan ahead of Dole 52-46. A new survey by Civitas, taken Monday through Wednesday, showed Hagan up by a smaller margin.

To our Absentee, Invisible, Ineffective UNsenator Triple-Dipping Dole .... This is EXACTLY what you deserve, not only for your misleading descent into s l i m e, but mostly for NOT fulfilling your responsibilities to the citizens of North Carolina.
Mr. Burr who of course supported Dole's descent: With a little luck, and a lot of work, you will join her in the ranks of former senators before long, altho' to be fair you've at least been present. On the other hand as a Bush rubberstamper, I disagree with you on almost everything and a new day is dawning in our state.

After Dole loses, guess where she's going home? In Washington, DC, not in NC. Stock up on Via gra.

Wow....what a surprise !

(actually, it is a bit surprising...pleasantly...to see that the folks who vote still have decency left in them to see the difference between what is right...and what is just plain wrong...)

that dole continues to stand by her slimeball ad is just so...so...so...republican....and to claim that it isn't an attack on Hagan's faith ????

no....? what is it, then....?

I like Hagan's reply: the "bearing false witness" thing....

I dunno what it means exactly...but I deduce that in religious circles it is a devastating counterpunch....

once again....republicans: using what hasn't worked the entire campaign...using reprehensible tactics which have driven voters AWAY from the gop...and expecting those tactics to be successful at the end...

wow...truly brilliant.....

The Ninth Commandment reads:

"Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." (Exodus 20:16)

Don't ask me how I know. And anyway, the original proper version which was edited by King James' goons read ""Thou shalt not bear false witness against Jim Nabors."

Using religion like Dole did was shameful.
I could have respect for her if she apologized, but I won't hold my breathe.
I hope she loses and spends many days thinking about what Christianity REALLY means.

Shouldn't we contribute financial support to Hagan's campaign? Hagan should be running her rebuttal ad
24 /7. I'm going to contribute. Shame on you Dole.

Fer sher, but really, if we Dems were to contribute to every race in which there is a GOP sleeezeb@g telling blatant lies and saying outrageous stuff to win against their Democrat opponent, we'd pretty much have to contribute to EVERY campaign.

Can't wait til McCain is up for re-election in Arizona (I guess in a couple of years.) Just on spite, I'm going to contribute to his opponent's campaign.

I so hope that all the candidates that run nasty smear negative ads this year lose. That will prove that negative no longer works.

The internet has changed things drastically. I can remember getting very discouraged and not voting at all because the only information available was negative tv and radio ads.......it always seemed like voters were forced to choose between two bad choices with so much negativity flying back and forth.

The internet has really empowered citizens to be involved and educated voters.....I hope the politicans catch up with the rest of us quickly and ditch the gimmicks.

I am from NC, and I consider Dole to be a carpertbagger. She's not from NC, and she rarely is in NC. I have already voted for Kay Hagen, and I hope that the Democrats take the state, including Obama. It's time for NC to realize that we truly need change.

It is when things start to get difficult do you see the true character of people. This is true in war, sports, politics and life.

The Republicans are losing across the board, and their deceit and cowardice are their most prominent traits on display now. Shameful, un-American and most defininately un-christian behavior in my view.

I actually think Dole would have an excellent chance to win if she publicly repudiated the ad, but like most of these politicians, they can NEVER admit a mistake for fear of appearing indecisive. And we all know where that got us.

A Dole loss will not be caused by an economy in the tank, nor because of her party's presidential candidate who has "negative coattails", but because of her own reprehensible campaign ad.

In a few days Dole can finally go home...where ever that is because it sure isn't in NC. Your efforts are sleazy enough rats are trying to throw you out of the sewer because the stench is to great. Hate and fear will get you what you deserve .. defeated... it is time to rally past the age where this crap is tolerated!
Vote, bring a friend and tell another!

I would have a lot more respect for a candidate whose rebuttal included something like "it's not anyone's business what I believe. As Americans we need to uphold the constitution and have separation of church and state."

Because she got so specifically defensive and now feels the need to tout her christianity, she just seems like every other politician: afraid to admit they don't believe in the gaseous bearded mass in the sky.

Go Bill Maher!!!!!!!

I also donated some money to Hagan after I saw that ad. I've never been to North Carolina and I don't really know what Hagan's stance is on the issues, but I do know that we need to get people like Dole out of Congress immediately.

I'm in Minnesota and am pulling for a Franken win after Coleman's whiny shenanigans yesterday.

And on top of that you also have that sewer dwelling Bachmann in your state. There's my best wishes that they're both relegated to the trash bin of Minnesota politics.

You know...I respect those with religious beliefs...I vote for them...

However, as an agnostic myself, my chances of being elected to any office is extremely slim...I am fodder for smear ads. Everyone talks about "freedom of religion" but I've never heard of "freedom of no religion".

Ok...I'm done crying...

You make a great point...and it's completely valid.

I think it pretty much goes without saying that all of these politicians, claiming they are devout christians and all...is just a lotta bunk....

The list of examples is so long.....topped by:

reagan never went to church on Sunday....he never worshipped....

So, of course, they do these things to get votes.....and in a state like North Carolina...I imagine religious devotion is a big issue....so...there it is...

I do like the fact that Hagan, among others, has actually been able to refer to the scripture of the SAME religion which dole tries to use as her rationale....

and just knocks her out with it.

because, of course, if one chooses to be religious....one can certainly interpret christianity as inclusive and life-affirming...as opposed to dogmatic and divisive....

I believe in freedom of religion.
I believe in freedom of no religion.
Most inportantly, I believe in freedom FROM religion!

Many of the great wars in history were from misguided religious crusades. Many believe the War in Iraq is one such.
Many will say this is a Christian country. I tell them, read a history book. This country was founded on the principles that religion would not be used to oppress others. Thus, we are suppose to have separation of church and state. (Are you listening Hannity, O'Reilly?)
Thank you, Mrs. Dole, for showing everyone the hypocrisy of some religious people.
By the way, I'm a Christian from birth, but I respect all religions, including those who choose not to.

The sort of politics that belongs in a garbage can is finally being tossed there by citizens who have had enough of trash like this. Let's hope that those candidates that have chosen hatred as a part of their reason for being elected will no longer have a platform to spew their crap. And shame on them.
