McClatchy:

U.S. Senate candidate Kay Hagan launched legal action against Sen. Elizabeth Dole's "godless" attack ad Thursday as a chorus of critics joined her in accusing Dole of crossing the line with the controversial TV spot.

...

A new Rasmussen poll, taken Wednesday after the Dole ad began airing, showed Hagan ahead of Dole 52-46. A new survey by Civitas, taken Monday through Wednesday, showed Hagan up by a smaller margin.

I am a Tar Heel, and this just makes me smile. Most of us may not agree with someone and voice it, but we do not resort to pure slander.

Your little stunt back fired didn't it ? Maybe Elizabeth Dole can get a job writing on bathroom walls. That would be an upgrade.

It's very hard to CHANGE...and I think people/campaigns have the tendency to do what has worked in the past, even though it is nasty and divisive. McCain had said that he would run a "clean" campaign and has run the same type of dishonorable campaign that Bush used against him (even some of the same players) in 2000. Fortunately I think we are all growing weary of these divisive tactics...we shall see on Tuesday how it all turns out!

I'm relieved that others have called Elizabeth Dole on her cheap remarks about her opponent. It truly is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that people remember. Losing honorably must remain preferable to getting into office by any means, especially sleazy ones. I'm ashamed of McCain's and Dole's tactics, while I wasn't a supporter of theirs, I had more respect for them before their campaigns this time around.

timezone - you may not have been paying close attention to politics in this country for the past 40 years as I have.

"It truly is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that people remember"

Politicians have consistently been rewarded for fighting dirty, and Americans have given them carte blanche during the "silly season" to lie at will. We seem to almost expect the spectacle. I could provide a long list of examples, but I'm sure you will find this fact to be true if you pay attention.

It is a strange duality in our (and other countries) system that we espouse such noble systems of govt, and our election process is so primitive and essentially negative. Occasionally we get positive examples, mostly recent dems, but even Reagan took a positive tack. Otherwise, as most analysts know, negative generally works, if done right. sad but true.

Uh, thanks for the history lesson, Forester, but I HAVE been paying attention to politics for the last forty years. While politicians may wind up being elected by dirty tactics, they often come back to haunt them (how many political scandals have come to light over the past forty years?). Looking back on history, how someone played the game generally came to light eventually, sometimes sooner, sometimes later. Bush hasn't come out unscathed from the last eight years. In this age of instant communication, many remarks and actions come to light within five minutes of someone saying or doing them and with the amount of fact checker sites online, not much goes unnoticed.
Hope you've paid attention.

Negativity done right? Polls have shown the voters don't LIKE negativity, period. They're more likely to respond to positively addressing the issues. Even in the presidential debates, most of the time, the meter dipped dramatically from the test voters when either candidate was being negative.

I am thrilled that this time, the ugly, attack ads, seems to be having less impact on the people, and that
people (at least the ones who can think for themselves) seem to be shying away from this BS.
Botox Lizzy, tried a dirty trick from the Karl Rove playbook, and it backfired, at least in the polls. It seems people think less of you, when all you have to offer the people, are lies, distortions, and personal attacks.

This is why Barack Obama is doing so well in the polls. People are hearing his message, and NOT personal attacks against his opponent, who has spent most of his time, and his VP's time, attacking Obama in their rallies.

I think a lot more Christians in this country are finally realizing that the Republican party does NOT represent them. Good for them.

And I absolutely LOVE how these idiots are getting killed in the polls after airing these slimy hate-filled lies about their opponents. About time people said "Enough!!!" We now have the means of checking their claims, so it's time the politicians learned to run on a platform of what they would do in office (THAT they can lie about...), rather than "Don't vote for that guy; he/she's an Arab".

Exactly - I'm so tired of the "so-called" Christians pretending to be real Christians, which, as we know are judged by their fruit, not by their claims of piety.

This is great. The only way we're ever going to elevate our political discourse is to send a strong message of opposition to Dole's tactics. As long as we vote for people who will use these kinds of tactics, as long as we affirm that "negative ads work" then that's what we'll continue to get. It disturbs me that in this country that's supposed to be about freedom and equality, it's some kind of mark on a candidate if they acknowledge all groups and people. Are atheists to have no voice in our politics? Muslims? Homosexuals? Any law-abiding person or group has a right to be heard and considered regardless of whether anyone else disagrees with their views and our public officials, if they truly want to represent the "people" should give everyone the opportunity to voice their concerns.

Sugar Lips is a do-nothing, good for nothing Senator, one of the least involved and least effective, a seat filler. She shows up in No. Carolina only when she is campaigning, complete with that sugary southern accent even though she's not been a resident of anywhere but the Watergate complex in D.C. for all these years. It's time she was put out to pasture, so her hubby can stock up on that little blue pill.
