Undeterred by media criticism, a drop in polls, and a defamation lawsuit, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) has released a second ad linking her opponent Kay Hagan to a group called "Godless Americans." The ad says Hagan's personal faith (which the Democrat defended in her own response ad) is "not the question."

The headline should read, "the Godless comment by the judgmental Senator, Elizabeth Dole and the true person of religious standing who has risen above Dole's hateful woman's hate speech. God bless you Ms. H

As a Canadian atheist, the overbearing religiosity of American politics has always annoyed me. Sometimes it's reliable entertainment - you can always count on the religious nuts to say the dumbest things in politics. Elizabeth Dole uses religion in the most base and standard Republican way - appealing to the God 'n' guns crowd. But if your whole campaign is based around calling your opponent "godless" - especially when she's a Sunday school teacher - I have two problems with that. It's a lie, sure, but it's really the whole idea of saying someone isn't qualified for office if they don't believe in God. Personally, I think that makes them MORE qualified.

Of course, this is America, so Kay Hagen's response ad has to emphasize her Christianity. Wow, you guys really LOVE Jesus down there, don't you? Seriously, grow up. God is Santa Claus for adults. Karl Marx had it right about religion being the opiate of the masses. It's no coincidence that the United States is both the most religious nation in the developed world while also having the weakest presence of organized labour. Without a culture that promotes ways of improving one's earthly existence, people do end up "clinging to guns and religion." I hate to see the world's lone superpower in the hands of these kinds of cretins (or the cynical politicians that cater to them). November 4 can't come fast enough. Obama is a Christian, but at least he doesn't cram it down your throat. Go

The below link is an excellent commentary on this sad senate race by a North Carolina citizen. It is well worth watching:

The manner in which Kay Hagan has responded to Dole's shameful attacks has left a bitter taste in my mouth. Sadly, Hagan has added insult to injury.

Sure, one may argue that Hagan took a pragmatic approach in her response; and one may correctly point out that at the end of the day Hagan is by far the best human for the job. However, Hagan had a unique opportunity to confront bigotry; I would go further and say Hagan had a moral responsibility to confront bigotry. Alas, she did not do it. She failed.

Hagan defended her faith; she condemned Dole's lies; she decried scurrilous, divisive negative attacks, and all of this was fine and just; however she did not confront the bigotry. A defense of non believers was not only called, such a defense was a moral imperative. Hagan OUGHT to have spoken out against Dole’s defamation and vilification of more than 30,000,000 Americans (a modest estimate of the total “Godless” population. The actual number may be much higher). Sadly, pathetically, Hagan not only failed to address the most important issue--universal human equality--she "threw the godless under the bus."

I thought we progressives were better than this. Frankly, I am almost as disgusted with our side as with the vile GOP.

(HUFPO: Stop censoring me! This is the fourth time I have posted a similar comment, will this be the fourth deletion. This is an OUTRAGE!)

According to a 1998 survey, 93% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences were atheist or agnostic. In Europe, the most successful countries in terms of quality of life and material prosperity are the least religious. As other posters have pointed out, the recent Canadian election was conducted largely without reference to "God".

First - let's get Barack Obama and a filibuster-proof Democratic Senate elected. And then, please, work on growing up and joining the 21st Century. Gods may be personally meaningful to some, but religious belief or lack thereof has NO BEARING on a person's morality, and has no business in public policy.

As we know "God" love everyone of us even one does not believe "God". ElizaBAD is without "God". She has only the "God" card when she is so attacking others by using it. Looking down to Americans today by "God", it is a big mess created by the "God" loving republicans Too bad, even "God", of course the smart American voters will drop her down for good. .

All Dole is proving is that she herself is the godless candidate and that she also has a total lack of morals or common sense.

I call B.S. on you Congzilla for using "godless" as a pejorative.

Religion has no place in Politics
And
The Dole woman is a poor ad for Christianity anyway.
She claims to read the Bible every day---why?
It does not seem to have an effect.

what's with the 'godless' noise? they're still Americans, right? isn't that what counts? or are the Christian Fundamentalists saying that their loyalties are with godly people before America?

The name they chose for their group is "Godless Americans, Inc." This can cause people to refer to them as "godless."

In your ignorance, Ramirez, and to your great discredit, you assume godlessness is an undesirable state. How very parochial of you.

Perhaps someday you will notice that the 21st century has dawned.

I think meeting with and accepting money from a group named "Godless Americans, Inc." is not a shrewd move in a North Carolina political campaign.

I think you are a very backward b i g o t Ramirez.

You hate others because they do not beleive as you do. That is foolishness. And you are a F o o l.

Elizabeth Dole needs a reality check and deserves the same healthy a$$-whupping her hubby took against Bill Clinton. North Carolina can do SO much better than this shrew.
