Undeterred by media criticism, a drop in polls, and a defamation lawsuit, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) has released a second ad linking her opponent Kay Hagan to a group called "Godless Americans." The ad says Hagan's personal faith (which the Democrat defended in her own response ad) is "not the question."

"In one week, you can put an end to the politics that would divide a nation just to win an election; that tries to pit region against region, city against town, Republican against Democrat; that asks us to fear at a time when we need hope. In one week, at this defining moment in history, you can give this country the change we need.....In one week, we can choose hope over fear, unity over division, the promise of change over the power of the status quo. In one week, we can come together as one nation, and one people, and once more choose our better history. That’s what’s at stake. That’s what we’re fighting for." Obama Closing argument Speech - Oct 28th 2008

GO VOTE NOW! Make History! Obama is need of all the votes necessary to create a landslide. Let's make sure that our state turns blue! Bring your friends and family - make it a group thing! Wouldn't you want to say 1 year from now, 5 years from now, or even 20 years from now that you contributed to the most highlighted election in US history? Wouldn't you be proud to tell your kids/grandkids years from now that you voted for this election? It will be the most talked about election for centuries. Voting is a right and a privilege. Let's all make history together!

Atheists and agnostics are not persecuted in America. They are ridiculed from time to time but so are Christians. They'll live.

And speaking of ridicule... If you give your organization a name like "Godless Americans" you should not be surprised if people accuse you of being godless.

I am counting on Elizabeth Dole's defeat as a result of this twisted and and pathetic 'non-issue' attack. She doesn't deserve to serve the good people of her state or anyone else. Whatever good she might have done as a public servant has now been negated. NO Americans should reward this kind of evil. She should be ashamed of herself. And as they say, What goes around comes around.

I am a Canadian and we just went through a Federal election ourselves. Seems to me there isn't enough separation of Church and State in the U.S..because this type of ad would never run in Canada.

You have speech codes in Canada that restrict a lot of what people can say.

The ad says Hagan's personal faith (which the Democrat defended in her own response ad) is "not the question."

Then what exactly IS the question? I've been voting since the 60's but I've never seen anything like this campaign season!

It really is great to see the Republicans floundering in desperation! Maybe this election cycle will wipe that smug grin off their bloated faces. I deplore the ugliness that the GOP has injected into the political process since 911, and it's very heartening to see the tides finally turning. Not that Republicans are any less ugly, but Americans are finally seeing it for what it is. The politics of division. And they're rejecting it! Americans are tired of the politics of division. America is one country! Divide and conquer is a war strategy. Is the Republican party at war with America? Divide and conquer is their prime domestic strategy. Pit citizen against citizen, neighbor against neighbor. Foment hate and intolerance. Divide and conquer. And Americans are tired of fear being wielded as a political weapon. Americans living in fear is what the terrorists want! That's what terrorism is! Are you going to let the terrorists win? And why is the Republican party resorting to terrorist tactics, trying to make you all live in fear? Do the Republicans want the terrorists to win? Or are they just co-opting terrorist tactics for their own political gain? Against their own people! Maybe the Republican party IS at war with America! So thank God they're losing! Defeat the enemy! Kick the bums out!

Fear is what the GOP does best. They were, and still are the party of Joe McCarthy--the unparalleled master of irrational scaremongering. Bluster, bravado, and self-righteous scaremongering. That's the GOP way. No longer the party of Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and Eisenhower, people can finally see the GOP as the frightened, small minded, mean party they've become. No hope, no ideas, no solutions, no compassion, no interest in the larger society--just tax cuts for gun totin' Christian tightwads. "Scrooge is our Jesus". That should be the GOP slogan.

A real rebuttal by Hagen would include defending "Godless" Americans (also know as atheists) as equal citizens of this country. Atheists are your friends, neighbors, family-members, teachers, police officers, firefighters... you name it. They pay taxes, work hard, donate to charity, volunteer, care for their communities and this country. They fight in our armies and defend the constitution; many losing their lives in the process. Many have been great leaders in the nations past and present (though in the present most are in the "closet" in this regard). No doubt many also go to church every Sunday.

The response by Hagen, with all due respect, is not much different than John McCain's response to the ignorant woman at one of his rallies who accused Obama of being an "Arab." McCain's response was as bad as the woman's assertion, "no... he's a decent man..."

Hagen's response, while not as egregious as McCain's, contains a glaring omission, which needs to be acknowledged.

Hagen can't do that.

Such a response would be the same as Obama defending Muslims when questions or accusations come up about his faith. People would assume that in defending Muslims that Obama must be one.

It does not matter that Muslims are American citizens, fight U. S. wars and die for their country like anyone else, McCain/Palin have said terrorists = Muslims = Obama. The best Obama could do was let others issue statements of support for Muslims, as Powell did. But he is not running for office.

Hagen is in the same boat. She can't defend atheists because Dole will say "See, she is one." In any event, in that part of the country being godless is a crime of sorts, so Hagen dare not make statements of support.

It's fascinating how we're the only western country where the term "athiest" is used as an insult. It's little wonder people in other countries laugh at us when crap like this comes out.

We're also the only civilized country where being 'educated' is considered a bad thing.
