Appearing on Fox News on Friday, former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger awkwardly fell on his sword, entirely taking back his previously critical assessment of Sarah Palin's readiness to serve as president, which was given to NPR on Thursday night.

As the Huffington Post noted earlier, Eagleburger's endorsement of McCain is frequently cited by the Republican nominee. But clearly, the opinions of President George H.W. Bush's Secretary of State were less welcome on the subject of Palin, whom Eagleburger had said was "of course" not "prepared to take over the reins of the presidency." Later, in his NPR interview, Eagleburger said, "Give her some time in the office and I think the answer would be, she will be [pause] adequate."

By Friday afternoon, however, Eagleburger was more eager to chastise himself than Palin.

"You are witnessing something quite unique: a man who is about to talk to you while he has his foot in his mouth," Eagleburger said when asked if his NPR quotes had been taken out of context.

"I made a serious mistake yesterday. I was quoted correctly," Eagleburger said. "I wasn't thinking when i said it -- in fact, I was discussing foreign policy, and this was in that context, and I was just plain stupid, and if I had given the flim-flam artist Barack Obama some success with this I am deeply apologetic."

It was a fine performance, but the Fox News host proceeded to take Eagleburger's retraction too far, resulting in another moment in which Eagleburger belittled Palin. Host Stuart Varney asked, "You do feel that she's a quick learner and would be good as vice president given a few days?"

To which Eagleburger paused and said, "A few days? No." Later, however, he did argue that Palin has "made it clear she's a quick learner," despite the fact that "she didn't know anything about foreign affairs, nor should she have on the basis of what she had done."

Winding up his extended apology, Eagleburger made clear, "I have done my best and I apologized to the McCain people."

Watch:

Also of interest is the fact that Eagleburger wasn't the only conservative to call Palin unprepared on Thursday. As Think Progress noted, Nevada Sen. John Ensign told a local reporter: "Well, I do not think that Barack Obama or her are experienced enough to be President of the United States -- neither one of them, and Hillary Clinton was much more qualified to be President than Barack Obama was, but that who the nominee is. John McCain is much more qualified than Barack Obama and certainly Joe Biden is much more qualified than Sarah Palin is. I'd rather have the most qualified person at the top of the ticket, not number two."

McCain has people endorsing him who just can't think clearly. This guy wasn't thinking when he made these remarks, he made a stupid mistake? McCain/Palin got some straight talk, but it hurt so much that it had to be taken back. The lack of integrity here is coming out loud and clear.

The criticism was warranted and something most Americans (and others around thee world) recognized a long time ago. I even wonder how she managed to be elected governor of Alaska.

Republican Speak: "I was stupid" means "I spoke the truth in public." Unforgiveable.

Damage is done, and, thanks to Internet media, will live forever. I would expect the NPR audio to show up in every future campaign she runs. It's only fair.
Hee, hee.

let's face it the Red party has been, has been taking up an running forthe hills for the 2 weeks now even longe. remeber Carly Fiorina? Her comment that nobody in either campaign (including the oneshe was working for)could run a CEO. Their have been a littany of Reds making not so grea comments about their own team. Once agaion I think the Red team realizes it's run Shoddy canpaign at best andcan't wait for this to be over. Note to Blue team- let's not get cocky. Let's wrap this up the right way and get us back into the Whitehouse. Our unity has shined from day one. We didn't need to pick someone
to "excite"our base. that in itself speaks volumes of how we handle things.

Loved the Bill Maher line:

When Palin was asked about Eagleburger, she replied they are good with french fries.

I think it's ironic that Gov. Palin, is actually the MOST qualified to be President of all the Candidates given she's a Governor and history has proven, Governors make better Presidents because of their management background. And when you investigate Palin's Economic Record in Alaska, you'll find, she an extremely popular Governor due to their economic progress under her watch. This doesn't mean I'm voting for her Ticket but I feel it's at least fair to be honest and Sarah Palin has experienced nothing less than horrible & disrespectful treatment from the Network Media which I can not condone regardless of my political views.

OMG, how funny!

"Did I say she is stupid? I meant to say she is stupid about foreign policy. There, see, all better. Now get out there and vote for McCain/ Palin!"

That's the absolute worst backpedal I've ever seen, and certainly the most comical without the spewer meaning it to be comical. If his foot is in his mouth, I wonder where his brain is ;-) Worst case of rectal-cranial inversion I've seen in a long time. Maybe being a Republican eventually rots your brain, like too much TV.

How pathetic. The best thing he can say about Sarah, someone he is supporting for political office, is that she isn't totally stupid, and can maybe learn what she needs to know about the job, but certainly not in a short time. I personally think even his low estimation of Sarah is optimistic. No wonder the Repubs with any brains left are deserting like rats from a sinking ship.

From Halloween parade last night in West Hollywood CA, a couple takes on Sarah Palin. At left, "Mess Alaska", and at right "I can see Russia from my backyard."

The man can't back-pedal his statements anymore than McCain can reverse his decision to select Palin or the consequences that his decision have had on his campaign. The truth about Palin was there for everyone to see before Eagleburger even spoke. She's woefully unqualified, but the GOP didn't think their failure to vet her would result in a resounding rejection by the electorate. All of this goes to the heart of the problem. They didn't think.
