Appearing on Fox News on Friday, former Secretary of State Lawrence Eagleburger awkwardly fell on his sword, entirely taking back his previously critical assessment of Sarah Palin's readiness to serve as president, which was given to NPR on Thursday night.

As the Huffington Post noted earlier, Eagleburger's endorsement of McCain is frequently cited by the Republican nominee. But clearly, the opinions of President George H.W. Bush's Secretary of State were less welcome on the subject of Palin, whom Eagleburger had said was "of course" not "prepared to take over the reins of the presidency." Later, in his NPR interview, Eagleburger said, "Give her some time in the office and I think the answer would be, she will be [pause] adequate."

By Friday afternoon, however, Eagleburger was more eager to chastise himself than Palin.

"You are witnessing something quite unique: a man who is about to talk to you while he has his foot in his mouth," Eagleburger said when asked if his NPR quotes had been taken out of context.

"I made a serious mistake yesterday. I was quoted correctly," Eagleburger said. "I wasn't thinking when i said it -- in fact, I was discussing foreign policy, and this was in that context, and I was just plain stupid, and if I had given the flim-flam artist Barack Obama some success with this I am deeply apologetic."

It was a fine performance, but the Fox News host proceeded to take Eagleburger's retraction too far, resulting in another moment in which Eagleburger belittled Palin. Host Stuart Varney asked, "You do feel that she's a quick learner and would be good as vice president given a few days?"

To which Eagleburger paused and said, "A few days? No." Later, however, he did argue that Palin has "made it clear she's a quick learner," despite the fact that "she didn't know anything about foreign affairs, nor should she have on the basis of what she had done."

Winding up his extended apology, Eagleburger made clear, "I have done my best and I apologized to the McCain people."

Watch:

Also of interest is the fact that Eagleburger wasn't the only conservative to call Palin unprepared on Thursday. As Think Progress noted, Nevada Sen. John Ensign told a local reporter: "Well, I do not think that Barack Obama or her are experienced enough to be President of the United States -- neither one of them, and Hillary Clinton was much more qualified to be President than Barack Obama was, but that who the nominee is. John McCain is much more qualified than Barack Obama and certainly Joe Biden is much more qualified than Sarah Palin is. I'd rather have the most qualified person at the top of the ticket, not number two."

I feel sorry for this man, that mixed with revulsion. He was truly slapped down by his superiors in the Neo Con gang he belongs to. How pathetic.

Eagleburger proven flip-flop artist, who has never been elected to anything, accuses Barack Obama, Democratic nominee for the Presidency of being a flim-flam artist?!?

This former Secretary of State, in an unguarded moment actually spoke his truth, then when faced with apparent expulsion from his cushy position within *acceptable republican society*, now resorts to name-calling to justify himself. How mature.

So is Mr. Eagleburger telling the truth NOW, with this ridiculous fabrication, or was he telling the truth THEN, when he merely stated what most everyone else already knows and fully accepts . . . Palin is simply not prepared (and most likely will never be) to hold the office.

The truth hurts, but when possessed with a conscience, it also heals. To come before the nation and lie like this is a disturbingly unconscionable act.

Clearly the McCain campaign got to Eagleburger in the same way that it got to Kissinger who had proclaimed in a CNN forum that he was clearly in favor of sitting down with Iran WITHOUT pre-conditions. McCain will go down in the history as the candidate that ran the most dishonest and dishonorable campaign up to this point in time.

Quite something isn't it? It is really eery that when faced with defending these lapses from his supporters and VP nominee, and his current position in the polls, McCain sits there and smiles and grin like it is all nothing.

It is as if he has briefed on and fully understands and accepts the plan the repubs have in place to steal yet another election.

Isn't this the judgment of McCain, both criminal elements.

It is amusing to see Eagleburger try to put the toothpaste back into the tube.

Eagelburger is like the boy who blurted out "The Emporer is naked" in the Hans Christian Anderson story "The Emporer's New Clothes." Actually all the competent Republicans are in the same position as the public was in that story. Just as everybody knew the Emporer was naked in the story but did not dare speak the awful truth, the competent Republicans all know that Palin is patently unqualified for the job, but cannot say so without suffering serious political blowback.

Mischievous headline: "Eagleburger Tries To Walk Back "Stupid" Palin Criticism". very mischievous. Why? Because it does not clarify whether the criticism or the criticizee is stupid.

"In one week, we can choose hope over fear, unity over division, the promise of change over the power of the status quo. In one week, we can come together as one nation, and one people, and once more choose our better history. That's what's at stake. That's what we're fighting for." - Quote from Barack Obama in his closing argument speech.

Once the stupid cat is out of the bag, it is too dumb to go back in and out of sight! Undoing what is done does not work too well, just reinforces the negative.

Less is often more, especially pertaining to Eagleburger's weak attempt to lighten his criticism of Palin. Give it up, Eagleburger - that cat is already out of the bag and has run for it, leaving your face covered with GOP egg.

LISTEN ALL: Please Go Vote! There has been confirmed reports of voter disenfranchisement and election fraud with the Republican Party and it's supporters. Obama is need of all the votes necessary to create a landslide. Let's make sure that our state turns blue! Bring your friends and family - make it a group thing! Wouldn't you want to say 1 year from now, 5 years from now, or even 20 years from now that you contributed to the most highlighted election in US history? Wouldn't you be proud to tell your kids/grandkids years from now that you voted for this election? It will be the most talked about election for centuries. Voting is a right and a privilege. Let's all make history together!

If Hillary Clinton hadn't run for President, all of the attacks on Sarah Palin would have been called sexist. Now that America has seen a woman who is extraordinary qualified, competent, educated, informed, and Presidential, we can see that an ill-prepared, ignorant, political spokesmodel is no substitute for the real thing. Sarah Palin does have some rare political gifts. Unfortunately, they don't add up to her being qualified to be President. I admire all the republicans who have been brave enough to state the truth.
