UPDATE:
Watch McCain on SNL with Tina Fey's Sarah Palin

PREVIOUSLY:
WASHINGTON - John McCain is set to appear on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" just three days before the presidential election.

Aides say the Republican presidential candidate will make a detour from battleground states to the late-night weekend show that has been a must-watch for many during the political season.

Earlier this month, McCain running mate Sarah Palin and her impersonator, Tina Fey, earned "Saturday Night Live" its best ratings in 14 years. Palin's guest shot had been widely anticipated since Fey began imitating her a month ago.

McCain last appeared on the show in May, after clinching the nomination and while the Democratic primary continued.

McCain hosted "SNL" in 2002.

Check out McCain's "SNL" cameo from May, when he begged Democrats to keep up the nomination battle past the August convention. He also took a few self-deprecating stabs at his age:

For the first time in the history of the United States a concession speech has been given on a late night comedy television show.

What a truly pathetic ending to a truly pathetic man.

I guess McCain got in the last word. He got to be on SNL less than 70 hours before the election. Sad that people actually would vote for someone because they were cewl on SNL. But I think there are many people who will do just that.

If SNL had had the chance, would Lorne Michaels have put on Joe McCarthy? Help him soften his image? I can just see the skit where they do a take-off of the Army/McCarthy hearings, with the Senator at the mike interviewing Jon Lovitz: "No, I, I never knew that Dentist was a Commie----I was there for, for, Bleaching! Yeah, that's the ticket....."

At the beginning of the "Weekend Update" segment, Sen McCain was boo-ed by some audience members. I think he was a bit surprised, but he took it in stride. In general, I thought he handled himself well, and even allowed himself to be the brunt of a joke or two in a good-natured way. I thought he was a good sport. All in all, he was funnier than Palin (not hard to do, unless she's trying to be serious. Then she's funnier'n anybody).

I don't appreciate the kind of campaign John McCain has run. But I don't hate him.

I just don't want him for my president. Sorry, Senator.

He's as UN-presidential as any candidate I've ever seen. Making fun of his VP pick is tasteless. He basically threw her under the bus ... bad move.

Was it funny? Yes. Did he gain anything from this? No.

It was undignified.

McCain was sooooo much better than Palin. He participated in the jokes which made it funny...she just sat there and was THE JOKE!

Thought the skit was funny and seems like everyone had a good laugh, the hits on Sara always good for a laugh. The Obermann skit went too long and Afleck looked like he was going to crack up as he was trying to really hamm it up.

Just saw the skit and I must say (playing devil's advocate) that it was HILARIOUS and after McCain loses this election I think I can have a somewhat better feeling abuot him.

Hope SNL can get a "Sarkozy" impersonator and some "Palin Country" signs in time for tonight's show.

c'mon -- that's funny. Especially at this point when the democrats are united and about to beat the crap out of that guy and his party.

But still, good delivery.
