UPDATE:
Watch McCain on SNL with Tina Fey's Sarah Palin

PREVIOUSLY:
WASHINGTON - John McCain is set to appear on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" just three days before the presidential election.

Aides say the Republican presidential candidate will make a detour from battleground states to the late-night weekend show that has been a must-watch for many during the political season.

Earlier this month, McCain running mate Sarah Palin and her impersonator, Tina Fey, earned "Saturday Night Live" its best ratings in 14 years. Palin's guest shot had been widely anticipated since Fey began imitating her a month ago.

McCain last appeared on the show in May, after clinching the nomination and while the Democratic primary continued.

McCain hosted "SNL" in 2002.

Check out McCain's "SNL" cameo from May, when he begged Democrats to keep up the nomination battle past the August convention. He also took a few self-deprecating stabs at his age:

As I said in response to Alec Baldwin's recent post asking "what people expected" after SNL gave Sarah Palin her most recent free forum to sway uncritical and uninformed voters just weeks before the election, I don't really find anything that funny in the results of this coming election. So many people confuse the Sarah Palin and John McCain they see reading scripted funny lines on a popular show like SNL for the people they really are; terribly unfunny, dangerous, and nearly unhinged individuals who, if elected, would finish the awful job of national destruction that George Bush has been engaged in for the last eight years. I understand that Lorne Michaels sees a potential ratings bonanza in having the frighteningly deranged McCain acting like a clown on the eve of the most critical election in generations, but giving him that kind of forum -- one that will almost certainly be seen by the inexplicably "undecided" voters still out there as giving McCain unwarranted "regular guy" cred that might just sway crucial votes at the last minute for all the wrong reasons -- is actually just irresponsible at this point. Not funny, Lorne. Not funny at all....

Democrats are so stuffy nowadays. I think Gore, McCain, Hillary, etc were all funny on SNL. Lighten up.

I've seen John McCain appear on SNL many times, even before this election cycle, and I must say he really is a funny guy. I about peed myself when he did that bit where he sang Barbra Streisand's songs. Yeah, he's a funny guy, but will I be voting for him? No.

He was great at the Al Smith dinner in NYC.
There is no doubt he is a great dinner speaker ala Reagan. He has pretty good timing and a real sense of humor...and alot of self deprecation...so necessary in comedy.
BUT that's exactly where he should stay ...on the banquet circuit

John McCain is the wedding singer compared to Barack Obama's super bowl halftime show!

Who cares - i really don't care but i will watch to see if the HILARIOUS actor who plays him on SNL will be there side by side with him- that guy is WONDERFUL - my favorite even over Tina Fey's Palin ...my favorite was of the "town hall" debate when he kept walking all around on stage that was SO FUNNY and so REAL that was the scary thing and also the guy that did Brokaw and Schieffer and then later did Biden on SNL - that guy is fantastic too - he does the voices SPOT ON..really all of them are wonderful - kudos to SNL - what a great season!

I abhor Palin as much as anyone else, but lets NOT get serious for a moment folks, the SNL footage was pretty funny... it's ok to laugh a little. All the comments so far are so nasty regarding a subject that should provide a bit of relief from all the election passion. I hope the divisivness and hatefulness we have seen from the other side does not spread into our camp. Regardless of rhetoric on both sides, I think we can all agree that we, voters, all want what we think is best for our country - the finite points and rationale behind those beliefs is something we should ultimately respect, no matter how ill-informed we feel them to be.

Voting for America on Nov. 4th

What a fitting way to end a silly & pathetic campaign....or maybe he will announce to the nation that his whole campaign was a joke from the begining.

I am disappointed to hear the old d*ckhead is going to be on SNL. I thought I heard our main man, President Barack Obama was going to make another appearance.

I think I'll take advantage of the time change and get that extra hour of sleep.

Swan song or last ditch effort to win over idiot undecided demographic. Could make some gains with an impressive showing, and we all know that McCain can actually be likable (remember the good ol' Daily Show days?). He was also admittedly funny at the Al Smith dinner.
So, to Lorne Michaels, I just want to be clear; if McCain ends up pulling an upset, I WILL hold you personally responsible and remorselessly destroy everything you ever loved. Be warned!

Too bad for McCain. I almost feel sorry for him (but not much). I hope he likes wearing the sad clown out fit.
