Miserable October For Finance Finally At An End

October is on track to go down in history as the worst month in the American stock market since 1987. On Friday, investors were poised to make sure the losses continue.

The Dow Jones industrials average opened slightly lower Friday, after a 189-point gain on Thursday. The Standard & Poor's 500-stock index was down 0.6 percent.
