DES MOINES, Iowa — Despite John McCain's prediction of an upset, Barack Obama reached for a landslide Friday, invading his rival's home state with TV ads and building a lead in early voting in key battlegrounds as the presidential race headed into a hectic final weekend.

McCain charged that Obama, bidding to become the first black president, "began his campaign in the liberal left lane of politics and has never left it. He's more liberal than a senator who calls himself a socialist," he added in Hanoverton, Ohio, a reference to Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont.

Yet with the economy almost certainly in a recession and the country clamoring for change after eight years of Republican rule, even some of McCain's allies conceded the obvious. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it would take a "major struggle for him to win" _ although he quickly added the Arizona senator had come back before when he had been counted out.

Privately, McCain's aides said their man trailed Obama by 4 points nationwide in internal polling.

An Associated Press-Yahoo News poll of likely voters put the Democrat ahead, 51 to 43, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The same survey gave McCain reason to hope _ one in seven voters, 14 percent of the total _ said they were undecided or might yet change their minds.

While the race for the White House drew most of the attention, minority Republicans in Congress braced for the loss of more seats in both the House and Senate.

Some said fresh polling in North Carolina suggested that incumbent GOP Elizabeth Dole had fallen further behind since airing an ad that tried to tie Democratic rival Kay Hagan to atheists.

Four days before the election, Obama was expanding his reach, and drawing large crowds as he moved methodically from one state to another that voted Republican in 2004.

After a stop home in Chicago to share Halloween with his two daughters, Obama took a bus ride about 30 miles across the state border, capping his day with a rally in Highland, Ind. "We are four days away from changing the United States of America," he proclaimed to a cheering crowd on a comfortable October evening.

Indiana is one of about a half-dozen states that went for President twice but remain up for grabs late this election season. Bush won the state by a 60-39 percent margin in 2004, and the competitive nature of the state this time around shows the strength of Obama's standing.

Obama used the occasion of Halloween to rib McCain in a new way, saying the Republican wore his usual costume: "Just like every year, he's going as George W. Bush."

Earlier in Iowa, Obama said, "What you started here in Iowa has swept the nation." His victory in the state's Democratic caucuses on Jan. 3 set him on the path to the party's nomination, and now to a lead in the presidential polls in the campaign's final hours.

One senior adviser said the Illinois senator had been given the names of potential Cabinet and White House staff picks for review but had not had much time to consider them. The official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Obama could name a chief of staff as early as next week if he wins the election, in an effort to project a sense of urgency. Aides have contacted Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois to consider a possible appointment to the post, but no job has been offered.

Aides announced he would air television commercials in McCain's home state of Arizona as well as in North Dakota and Georgia. He had run ads in the latter two states earlier in the campaign before suspending that effort.

The ad in McCain's state was a soft sell in a campaign that has had its share of attacks. This spot featured endorsements from former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Warren Buffett, the nation's best-known investor. Before boarding a flight late Friday for Las Vegas, Obama responded to a shouted question about TV ads in Arizona. "We want to win everywhere," he said.

Even so, McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, dismissed it as a waste. "We encourage them to pick other states that we intend to win" to spend their money, he said.

Davis contended, "We are witnessing perhaps, I believe, one of the greatest comebacks since John McCain won the primary."

Privately, some Republicans expressed concerned about early voting trends, although the party had yet to unleash its final 72-hour program, designed to reach millions of voters deemed sympathetic to McCain and the Republicans.

Statistics showed Democrats ahead among pre-Election Day voters in Iowa, North Carolina, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. Bush won all six in 2004, and McCain needs to win most of them to claim the White House this year.

In Georgia, one of the states where Obama began advertising on Friday, official figures show 35 percent of the early votes have been cast by blacks, and lines have been longest in and around reliably Democratic Atlanta. In the 2004 election, blacks accounted for 24 percent of the state's ballots.

McCain was on the second day of a bus tour through battleground Ohio, a state that supported Bush and has voted with the winner in each presidential election for two decades.

"We're closing, my friends, and we're going to win in Ohio. We're a few points down but we're coming back and we're coming back strong," he said.

Later Friday, Schwarzenegger joined him at a rally in Columbus.

"John McCain has served his country longer in a POW camp than his opponent has in the United States Senate," Schwarzenegger said. "I only play an action hero in the movies. John McCain is a real action hero."

McCain hit the same theme in a new television ad that had the feel of a campaign-closing appeal.

In it, he pledged to fix the economy, cut government waste and safeguard the nation's security.

"I've served my country since I was 17 years old. And spent five years longing for her shores. I came home dedicated to a cause greater than my own," said the former Navy pilot who was shot down, held and tortured for more than five years as a Vietnam prisoner of war.

The ironic thing about his whole Schwarzenegger/McCain love fest is the California economy is awful, made worse by this economic crisis caused by Bush's deregulation. The Republican arrogance is frightening. I heard Schwarzeneggaer make his socialism attacks against Obama. Why is it our country destroys anyone who tries to help ordinary people. That's what every assassination in this country has been about. Yet we talk about freedom all over the world.

Hypocrosy. I believe that's why young people are so engaged in this. My college-age daughter and her friends are going through election day anxiety. If Obama doesn't win, I'm concerned about the effect an Obama defeat would have on our young people.

well there is a pic of the governator going around that I don't think he wants out there showing his flab, maybe he should refrain from the skinny legs comments and stick to what he knows best, terminating people on screen. sorry arny

Only Maria knows what Arnie really thinks. The McCain campaign is an embarrassment for anyone who ever once sang the man's praises (which I did - for his opposition to torture). The poor man has sold his soul to become President - and he knows it. Unlike the extremist Palin, I'd like to believe he'll be left to reflect, in the end, with some sense of personal shame.

Arnie tought "skinny legs" was the punchline, actually,Governator, the joke's on you - guess you hadn't read the news on politico.com that YOU're actually being considered for a cabinet position on the O Team.

What does Grandpaw have for you... a sad photo op opening for more lame Governator jokes.

Maria, he's clueless, keep him home.

McCain with Arnie was THE most un-Presidential I've ever seen McCain look. What the heck was all that extravagant pointing at Arnie, then giving the crowd a double-thumbs up, all the while grinning inanely? And he did it several times. It was like the high school geek being overcome with delight at standing next to the cool kid in line. Do you really want a President who comes over all giddy like a teen girl meeting her pop idol when he is in the same room as someone famous? Unbelievably cringeworthy.

Well, I'm like a great many other people. I'm sick of this trashy campaign and just want to get it over and done with. My reasons for not voting for McCain are still the same. He's shown poor judgment in picking an inexperienced woman on the ticket, he's going to continue the war indefinately and break the country financially even worse that we already are, and maybe start more wars, he has appeared to be indecisive and erratic, as well as hostile, he's admitted that his weakness is the economy, and he cannot possibly identify with the problems of our middle class who are struggling, his past associations with lobbyists, and finally, the smear campaign that has surpassed all previous campaigns, full of outright lies, rumors, and ineuendo, after promising to run a clean campaign. We've just had 8 years of lies and I've had enough of that. McCain has proven he would lie just like Bush and Cheney to get what he wanted. i.e. WMD's

I so love Arnold's spiel about having to flee Socialism in Austria.

By the way, that's where I'm posting from. The original training place where Arnold built his body is about 10 minutes walk from where I sit.

Now curiously, Austria usually doesen't make the headlines for left-leaning politics- quite the opposite, unfortunately. The regional Government was conservative during Arnolds entire time here. Now it's true that in the 70s. the federal govt. was socialist, but it was led by Bruno Kreisky, but a) Kreisky was a legendarily popular figure across party lines, and b) down here, Red Vienna often seems a long way away.

On the economic front of course, there is very little difference between conservative and social democratic parties right across Europe. They ALL believe in keeping taxes - and public services - at quite a high level. But you know, that's not really something the populace of the EU is groaning under.

Sure, it's a little bit harder to make it big here as a musclebound freak, and its not really special to have an Austrian accent - erm, the country is full of Austrians, and the all sound like that when they speak English.

Big, socialist deal, Mr. Governator.

So what you are saying is that..

Europe didn't fall apart with the "socialists" taking over the European Union.. or even before such a phrase was ever quoted from the right..

And people don't even have to worry about going into bankruptcy by getting sick.. You Europeans are a strange bunch.. I heard that some of you don't even have to pay for tolls on the roads.. How dare you?!?

Arnold Schwartznegger, of all people, stumping for McCain knowing that McCain stands against everything Arnold supports. I was hoping he would keep his dignity and stay out of this election.
Anyway, that same POW rhethoric has worn thin, and now gets the pity votes.
The past is over - the present is here, and the future still to come - McCain is the past, Obama is the present and the future. I vote for the present and the future....Barack Obama!

Whoa! According to many bigots, if you have 'just one drop' of African American blood, you're black. So, do we have two black men running for president?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:27 AM on 11/01/2008

Well yes, to one way out on the right the middle looks left. But, consider, John campaigns like some kid, calling names. "He's a..." is basically an immature kind of argument. "I'm ready for the fight..." is another extremely immature argument. I don't know where a man his age gets this immaturity but it isn't attractive to me. I'd rather have my president reason as opposed to fighting. If John's first reaction is to call names and fight, keep him away from the red telephone.

What biting criticism from Arnold, whose experience when he ran for Governor consisted of acting (badly) in cheesy, albeit profitable movies. And look what a great job he has done bring together warring factions in California--at one point he practically had to shut down the government because his leadership was so lame. And Maria--where are you Maria Shriver? Do you have an opinion of your own, or are you standing by your man?

Half lessons learned at Mommy's knee... the women in the clan ALWAYS stand by their man...
forgot the part that the men should be Democrats.

Maria - take a lesson from Nancy - whisper in Arnie's ear that O is considering a cabinet slot for him(check it out on politico.com) while grandpaw will just throw him under the bus.
Spread the "health" around, take steroid brain home.

Arrrnuld did a lot of talk about Obama and socialism today. This from the man requesting a federal bailout for California because he drove the state into bankruptcy.
