DES MOINES, Iowa — Despite John McCain's prediction of an upset, Barack Obama reached for a landslide Friday, invading his rival's home state with TV ads and building a lead in early voting in key battlegrounds as the presidential race headed into a hectic final weekend.

McCain charged that Obama, bidding to become the first black president, "began his campaign in the liberal left lane of politics and has never left it. He's more liberal than a senator who calls himself a socialist," he added in Hanoverton, Ohio, a reference to Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont.

Yet with the economy almost certainly in a recession and the country clamoring for change after eight years of Republican rule, even some of McCain's allies conceded the obvious. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it would take a "major struggle for him to win" _ although he quickly added the Arizona senator had come back before when he had been counted out.

Privately, McCain's aides said their man trailed Obama by 4 points nationwide in internal polling.

An Associated Press-Yahoo News poll of likely voters put the Democrat ahead, 51 to 43, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The same survey gave McCain reason to hope _ one in seven voters, 14 percent of the total _ said they were undecided or might yet change their minds.

While the race for the White House drew most of the attention, minority Republicans in Congress braced for the loss of more seats in both the House and Senate.

Some said fresh polling in North Carolina suggested that incumbent GOP Elizabeth Dole had fallen further behind since airing an ad that tried to tie Democratic rival Kay Hagan to atheists.

Four days before the election, Obama was expanding his reach, and drawing large crowds as he moved methodically from one state to another that voted Republican in 2004.

After a stop home in Chicago to share Halloween with his two daughters, Obama took a bus ride about 30 miles across the state border, capping his day with a rally in Highland, Ind. "We are four days away from changing the United States of America," he proclaimed to a cheering crowd on a comfortable October evening.

Indiana is one of about a half-dozen states that went for President twice but remain up for grabs late this election season. Bush won the state by a 60-39 percent margin in 2004, and the competitive nature of the state this time around shows the strength of Obama's standing.

Obama used the occasion of Halloween to rib McCain in a new way, saying the Republican wore his usual costume: "Just like every year, he's going as George W. Bush."

Earlier in Iowa, Obama said, "What you started here in Iowa has swept the nation." His victory in the state's Democratic caucuses on Jan. 3 set him on the path to the party's nomination, and now to a lead in the presidential polls in the campaign's final hours.

One senior adviser said the Illinois senator had been given the names of potential Cabinet and White House staff picks for review but had not had much time to consider them. The official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Obama could name a chief of staff as early as next week if he wins the election, in an effort to project a sense of urgency. Aides have contacted Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois to consider a possible appointment to the post, but no job has been offered.

Aides announced he would air television commercials in McCain's home state of Arizona as well as in North Dakota and Georgia. He had run ads in the latter two states earlier in the campaign before suspending that effort.

The ad in McCain's state was a soft sell in a campaign that has had its share of attacks. This spot featured endorsements from former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Warren Buffett, the nation's best-known investor. Before boarding a flight late Friday for Las Vegas, Obama responded to a shouted question about TV ads in Arizona. "We want to win everywhere," he said.

Even so, McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, dismissed it as a waste. "We encourage them to pick other states that we intend to win" to spend their money, he said.

Davis contended, "We are witnessing perhaps, I believe, one of the greatest comebacks since John McCain won the primary."

Privately, some Republicans expressed concerned about early voting trends, although the party had yet to unleash its final 72-hour program, designed to reach millions of voters deemed sympathetic to McCain and the Republicans.

Statistics showed Democrats ahead among pre-Election Day voters in Iowa, North Carolina, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. Bush won all six in 2004, and McCain needs to win most of them to claim the White House this year.

In Georgia, one of the states where Obama began advertising on Friday, official figures show 35 percent of the early votes have been cast by blacks, and lines have been longest in and around reliably Democratic Atlanta. In the 2004 election, blacks accounted for 24 percent of the state's ballots.

McCain was on the second day of a bus tour through battleground Ohio, a state that supported Bush and has voted with the winner in each presidential election for two decades.

"We're closing, my friends, and we're going to win in Ohio. We're a few points down but we're coming back and we're coming back strong," he said.

Later Friday, Schwarzenegger joined him at a rally in Columbus.

"John McCain has served his country longer in a POW camp than his opponent has in the United States Senate," Schwarzenegger said. "I only play an action hero in the movies. John McCain is a real action hero."

McCain hit the same theme in a new television ad that had the feel of a campaign-closing appeal.

In it, he pledged to fix the economy, cut government waste and safeguard the nation's security.

"I've served my country since I was 17 years old. And spent five years longing for her shores. I came home dedicated to a cause greater than my own," said the former Navy pilot who was shot down, held and tortured for more than five years as a Vietnam prisoner of war.

When McCain talks about his tax policy, he often mentions reducing the capital gains tax. In today's economic environment, most Americans do not have capital gains. And, middle to lower income Americans do not even know what a capital gain is. am amazed that people are so willing to vote against their own interests. As a small business owner, I can tell you that most small businesses make much less than $250,000 a year; most make less than $100,000.

This has been happening for YEARS now, since Reagan introduced his "voodoo economics," and middle class people began to vote Rethuglican against their own self-interest financially. I will never understand how it continues to this very day...people who vote Rethuglican seem to pay no attention to the man behind the curtain, who is taking all his money away.

I voted absentee today so i can canvass for Obama/Biden in Ohio on Nov. 4th. Go Ohio! Go Obama!

You get it. Lets hope that more and more who leaned for the other side will get it.

were you impressed by how happy these folks seemed to be? I was amazed at the joy I saw in all the folks waiting in line for early voting. Nobody was mad or grumbling or anything. It was so nice for a change.

The problem with pathological liars is that they have no credibility. The Mc camp refers to their internal polling which we all suspect is manufactured and about as accurate as the attendance figures at their rallies. They've lied too many times - no one believes anything they say.

Now, all this doesn't mean we slow down or stop working to get Barack and Joe elected. It means we work harder. We have to make certain that every Obama voter gets to the polls. Canvas, phone bank. Do something to ensure that we win.

I tried to listen to the coverage of the "Victory Rally" in Columbus but I literally felt ill about fifteen minutes in and had to get away from my television. I live in central Ohio and I wish like mad that McCain would get the hell out of my state. Palin too. They are desperately " whoring " themselves here and I'm sick of listening to them.

Pathetic is right! I just wonder how many would have shown if there were no celebrities there tonight... You know that if he had to bus in innocent ( and unfortunate ) schoolkids to fill his rally in Defiance then a bit of those 10,000 seatfillers were just incredibly bored and thought they'd catch a glimpse of Arnie and "Bocephus"....(giggle)

Did anyone catch the graphic of McCain with Awwwnold in Columbus? He (McCain) looked demented. He was wandering around the stage pointing and giving this two handed thumbs up to Schwarzenegger all the while wearing this demented grin. It loses something in the description, but if you see it, you'll know what I mean. The man appears to be unbalanced.

Just to reply to my own post, another thought.

Have you noticed that McCain surrounds himself at these rallies with guys like Juliani? Juliani! This guy is a sleaze even by Republican standards. Next to him, sleazy is a compliment. I notice he hasn't yet covered himself in Ground Zero dust though. His supply must be low.

The myth of Juliani as hero of 9/11 is almost as phoney as the myth of McCain's heroics. He was the one who put the disaster command center in the WTC. That's like building a school on an artillery range.

McCain is dreaming, the numbers atre getting worse for him not better, and he keeps saying silly things that make it sound like he is living in 1972 or something.

What about Arnie ragging on Obama needing to build muscles. This from a guy who had preventive heart surgery. Barrack should challenge him to a game of hoops and we'll see how Arnie does in that. Do all Repubs have to be such @@@@s?

Don't forget, Arnie is the same guy that referred to Democrats as girlie-men or some such thing in 2004 during the Republican convention. And this from a guy whose only moments of action were choreographed on a sound stage or back lot in Hollywood. One thing about those Republicans, they sure know how to tell other people how to fight.

When I look at the recent Obama moves, I'm reminded of Hannibal and his campaign against Rome, but probably not the way that most people are thinking about it. Hannibal pressed the Romans deep into Italy, coming the back way through the Alps, in a bid to "comeback" and defeat the Romans. Rather than fight a ferocious Carthaginian army atop elephants, which is quite symbolic, as they pressed toward Rome, the Roman's instead attacked Hannibal's homeland and forced him to retreat from Italy.

McCain campaign keeps talking about the comeback in Pennsylvania, but while he's metaphorically climbing through the Alps toward Pennsylvania, Obama has launched a counter attack right in Arizona, McCain's homeland.

I wonder to what extent Obama's had that ground game going on since the convention and is now playing another trump card to pull the rug right out from under McCain. If he's been consciously working on this all this time and is just now springing the trap, then I think it is the ultimate answer to Palin's condescending remarks about community organizers.

Here, here! All I could think of during Rudy Guiliani's sneeringly contemptuous and Sarah Palin's snarky contemptuous speeches was "community organizers register voters and get out the vote, you a**es!" I hope they have to eat their sarcastic, ignorant words.

Obama's community organizing background has given him a significant advantage against the Clinton machine and, now, John McCain and the RNC.

I've never been polled, my husband hasn't, my son hasn't, my neighbor hasn't, nobody I know has been polled. But, if we WERE polled, Obama would even be further ahead! I expect a bigger victory than anybody can predict, because there are millions of people that have never been counted by early polling and we're going for Obama!

I agree that McCain should not be called a leader any longer when he has run such a divisive campaign during a crisis in our country. I will be donating to his opponent in his next Senate race. Time for McCain and all his old divisive politics to retire for good. The Republicans have run a "lynch the uppity black boy" campaign and they need to pay the price for it for a long long time.
