DES MOINES, Iowa — Despite John McCain's prediction of an upset, Barack Obama reached for a landslide Friday, invading his rival's home state with TV ads and building a lead in early voting in key battlegrounds as the presidential race headed into a hectic final weekend.

McCain charged that Obama, bidding to become the first black president, "began his campaign in the liberal left lane of politics and has never left it. He's more liberal than a senator who calls himself a socialist," he added in Hanoverton, Ohio, a reference to Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont.

Yet with the economy almost certainly in a recession and the country clamoring for change after eight years of Republican rule, even some of McCain's allies conceded the obvious. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said it would take a "major struggle for him to win" _ although he quickly added the Arizona senator had come back before when he had been counted out.

Privately, McCain's aides said their man trailed Obama by 4 points nationwide in internal polling.

An Associated Press-Yahoo News poll of likely voters put the Democrat ahead, 51 to 43, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The same survey gave McCain reason to hope _ one in seven voters, 14 percent of the total _ said they were undecided or might yet change their minds.

While the race for the White House drew most of the attention, minority Republicans in Congress braced for the loss of more seats in both the House and Senate.

Some said fresh polling in North Carolina suggested that incumbent GOP Elizabeth Dole had fallen further behind since airing an ad that tried to tie Democratic rival Kay Hagan to atheists.

Story continues below

Four days before the election, Obama was expanding his reach, and drawing large crowds as he moved methodically from one state to another that voted Republican in 2004.

After a stop home in Chicago to share Halloween with his two daughters, Obama took a bus ride about 30 miles across the state border, capping his day with a rally in Highland, Ind. "We are four days away from changing the United States of America," he proclaimed to a cheering crowd on a comfortable October evening.

Indiana is one of about a half-dozen states that went for President twice but remain up for grabs late this election season. Bush won the state by a 60-39 percent margin in 2004, and the competitive nature of the state this time around shows the strength of Obama's standing.

Obama used the occasion of Halloween to rib McCain in a new way, saying the Republican wore his usual costume: "Just like every year, he's going as George W. Bush."

Earlier in Iowa, Obama said, "What you started here in Iowa has swept the nation." His victory in the state's Democratic caucuses on Jan. 3 set him on the path to the party's nomination, and now to a lead in the presidential polls in the campaign's final hours.

One senior adviser said the Illinois senator had been given the names of potential Cabinet and White House staff picks for review but had not had much time to consider them. The official spoke on condition of anonymity.

Obama could name a chief of staff as early as next week if he wins the election, in an effort to project a sense of urgency. Aides have contacted Rep. Rahm Emanuel of Illinois to consider a possible appointment to the post, but no job has been offered.

Aides announced he would air television commercials in McCain's home state of Arizona as well as in North Dakota and Georgia. He had run ads in the latter two states earlier in the campaign before suspending that effort.

The ad in McCain's state was a soft sell in a campaign that has had its share of attacks. This spot featured endorsements from former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Warren Buffett, the nation's best-known investor. Before boarding a flight late Friday for Las Vegas, Obama responded to a shouted question about TV ads in Arizona. "We want to win everywhere," he said.

Even so, McCain's campaign manager, Rick Davis, dismissed it as a waste. "We encourage them to pick other states that we intend to win" to spend their money, he said.

Davis contended, "We are witnessing perhaps, I believe, one of the greatest comebacks since John McCain won the primary."

Privately, some Republicans expressed concerned about early voting trends, although the party had yet to unleash its final 72-hour program, designed to reach millions of voters deemed sympathetic to McCain and the Republicans.

Statistics showed Democrats ahead among pre-Election Day voters in Iowa, North Carolina, Florida, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. Bush won all six in 2004, and McCain needs to win most of them to claim the White House this year.

In Georgia, one of the states where Obama began advertising on Friday, official figures show 35 percent of the early votes have been cast by blacks, and lines have been longest in and around reliably Democratic Atlanta. In the 2004 election, blacks accounted for 24 percent of the state's ballots.

McCain was on the second day of a bus tour through battleground Ohio, a state that supported Bush and has voted with the winner in each presidential election for two decades.

"We're closing, my friends, and we're going to win in Ohio. We're a few points down but we're coming back and we're coming back strong," he said.

Later Friday, Schwarzenegger joined him at a rally in Columbus.

"John McCain has served his country longer in a POW camp than his opponent has in the United States Senate," Schwarzenegger said. "I only play an action hero in the movies. John McCain is a real action hero."

McCain hit the same theme in a new television ad that had the feel of a campaign-closing appeal.

In it, he pledged to fix the economy, cut government waste and safeguard the nation's security.

"I've served my country since I was 17 years old. And spent five years longing for her shores. I came home dedicated to a cause greater than my own," said the former Navy pilot who was shot down, held and tortured for more than five years as a Vietnam prisoner of war.

Why on earth is he wasting time in Iowa? For that matter, why is anyone wasting time in Iowa? Sorry, just couldn't help myself!

I think becuase that is where Obama got his start. Iowa gave him his first victory. It was a "thank you" of sorts.

According to McCain he got his start in the living room of a couple of terrorist bombers. Guess he wouldn't want to go there, at least until the election is over anyway.

We just got back from Des Moines where we saw Barack Obama live and in person. I don't know how many were there, but it looked like a big crowd from where we stood. It was great to finally see him in person, and the crowd was pumped! Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) warmed up the crowd telling us (among other things) that, "What you need to know about this election is simple. You learned it back in Driver's Education. When you get to the polls: If you want to go backwards you put it in 'R', and if you want to move forward you put it in..." and the crowd screamed 'D'! What a day!

I was at the Obama Rally today in Des Moines with my 82 year old father. The enthusiasm was awesome! At least 25,000 attended the rally - and Obama was his usual inspiring and presidential self! Something we need to see in the White House. I wore my "That One 08" sticker - and was proud to be a part of history in the making. I'm still giddy!

One key reason why McCain and Palin are struggling in the polls is that they continue to lack the ability to distinguish between negative ads and speeches that attack the opponent's positions from those that attack the person.

Labeling people as "patriots" or "terrorist sympathizers" or the like is easy. It doesn't require much thought or insight. And so this is what McCain and Palin rely upon to stir up the crowds.

What they do not (and apparently cannot) do is develop cogent, sophisticated arguments about policies that the GOP would implement to solve major problems. Just a lot of vague talk about being a "reformer" and a "maverick".

Yes, the public is angry. They should be. But McCain and Palin made them rabid with hatred toward the rival candidate. And now they are trying to deflect blame for the outrageous comments, some advocating violence, made by their supporters about Obama as a result of their inflammatory stump speeches.

It is analogous to a person negligently playing with matches and starting a wildfire, and then denying any responsibility for the resulting property damage.

Obama's campaign from its inception has been much more positive in tone, and when he does attack, it is consistently against the policies and platform rather than the person.

Obama has shown far better judgement in how to run a campaign; this is usually the first good indicator about how the person will run the country.

excellent post. the last resort of the ignorant is to slap a label on something they can't comprehend. McCain/Palin haven't a clue what the words "maverick," "socialist," "terrorist," or "patriot" mean, but they sling them around indiscriminately. of course, they don't understand what they never cared to find out about; all they're interested in is the power they perceive the office gives them.

I've been phone banking for Obama for 6 weeks now--and we were told that we could point out policy differences between the two candidates when speaking to undecided voters, but that it wasn't necessary to smear McCain.

I was impressed that that idea filters all the way down to the lowest ranks of the campaign.

Excellent post. I highly doubt Palin understands the meaning of the word cogent. I've really never seen a more unintellectual candidate for the 2nd highest office in the country. That was McCain's second largest mistake. His first was thinking he could become President by using his POW status as though the nation owed him the office.

In 2000, McCain tried to pull the Republican Party out of the gutter, but instead McCain was dragged down into the sewer, where he seems to have made himself at home.

I hear Arnold the Terminator was with McCain today in Ohio.
A while back I stated that anyone that failed to stand up against McCain
or any one that chose to support him after all these hateful, inciting remarks
of terrorism...ect would loose my suport as well as respect. Well, Arnold,
just lost mine. I can not and will not support anyone that stands beside
John McCain because of the way he and his campaign have conducted
themselves these past 6 weeks. His actions are unforgivable in my book as
he has delibertly with malace of forthought tried to destroy, slander and smear
the name and reputation of an honest American and any one that stands with
him will also wear the same lable in my book. In the words of John McCain

The Governator was notiorious for kowtowing with big business interests to get millions of dollars to push his bills that would have cut hospital workers wages. He has also put the State into deep debt by passing bonds that pushed the State deficit (created by Bush-Cheney buddies like Enron) past his term.

We are now at the stage of the election where Mc can throw any old crap against the wall - because no one has time to fact-check what he says. Hence the stuff like Ohio is winnable, PA is a statistical dead heat, he's going to pull out from behind.

If Mc wins, it will be the biggest upset in history, and every polling entity, blogger, and pundit - save Bill O'Reilly and the nuts over at Little Green Footballs and No Quarter - will be eating huge amounts of crow for Thanksgiving. Not bloody likely.

Read it and weep, Rethugs!

The decision to finance a final advertising push is forcing McCain to curtail spending on Election Day ground forces to help usher his supporters to the polls, according to Republican consultants familiar with McCain's strategy.

The vaunted, 72-hour plan that President Bush used to mobilize voters in 2000 and 2004 has been scaled back for McCain. He has spent half as much as Obama on staffing and has opened far fewer field offices. This week, a number of veteran GOP operatives who orchestrate door-to-door efforts to get voters to the polls were told they should not expect to receive plane tickets, rental cars or hotel rooms from the campaign.

"The desire for parity on television comes at the expense of investment in paid boots on the ground," said one top Republican strategist who has been privy to McCain's plans. "The folks who will oversee the volunteer operation have been told to get out into the field on their own nickel."

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:11 PM on 10/31/2008

What? What? You mean that they may actually have to....volunteer to oversee the "volunteer operation"?

What do you want to bet that the whole effort collapses in incompetance to produce the worst fiasco in GOP history.

But McCain did use buses to get those 4000 school kids to his rally! Let's hope that expenditure pays off!

I'm offended by McCain's comments. He said Obama was "to the left of someone who is a socialist". Since when does being to the left make one a socialist? Since when does being a liberal make you a socialist? And being far left makes you worse than a socialist?

Just under whose Administration was it that wait-people started having their tips treated as taxable income?

Ronald Reagan.

And not once in the whole time of RR, George Herbert Walker Bush, Newt Gingerich and Republican control of Congress, OR George W. Bush...did the party stop collecting that tax!

They cut taxes on the rich, they blocked minimum wage increases for over ten consecutive years, they filibustered and vetoed SCHIP, they threatened to privatize Social Security and end it by 2020, they insisted that Medicare be pared, McCain voted against increasing the GI Bill to a level that GI's could actually use it to afford college. But they never stopped the tax on tips.
