Via The New York Times:

The Democratic candidate for Senate in North Carolina fired back in court on Thursday after a television advertisement questioned her Christian faith and linked her to a political group called the Godless Americans.

The candidate, State Senator Kay Hagan, filed a defamation lawsuit against her Republican opponent, Senator Elizabeth Dole, and released a 30-second television response affirming her belief in God.

WATCH her new ad:

Undeterred, Sen. Dole released a second "Godless" ad, claiming that Hagan's faith isn't "the question" and again tying Hagan to the Godless Americans group.

It's people like Senator Dole and Sarah Palin and the rest of the religious right that have destroyed the republican party?
It will take decades to recover, the fall out may even produce another political party if the republicans have any brains they will kick these religious nutters right back under the rocks and cults they crawled out from?

Elizabeth Dole has demonstrated herself to be a woman of low character.

Liddy Dole is as mean-spirited and as vicious as her husband and McCain and Palin combined. I'm just going to sit back with a cocktail and enjoy Tuesday when she goes down in flames.

"God" and "Judea-christian" Religion as the center of political campaings surely is unique to the U.S. alone- among "modern" societies- exception to be the Islamic Theocracies!
Now the Questions would be are the Republicans planing to establisch a "theocratic" Democrazy , a "democratic" Theocracy or even just a Theocracy where 'God' wants us all to "Drill Baby Drill and follow 'his' god-chosen Repressentants, the new Kings, the "Deceiders??

It is no surprise the neocons are SHAMELESS, after all 'god' is always on their side even in smears, lies and bigotery.

I am amazed that this is an issue for 2008. WOW, it's like were living in the 60's how can people be ignorant enough to allow religion to dictate their political views.

Yes, I would attend the event I accept all people who accept me.

My guess is that all the purveyors of these desperate ads will lose as will McCain. And with any luck - these tactics will be forever - well at least for a decade or so - the hallmark of losers - and thus disavowed.

Oh boy. As an oversees observer I have to sit back and sigh in disbelief. Who really cares about God anyway. Wake up America, Europe and most of the rest of the world put God to bed decades ago. There never is a place for religion in politics and your founding fathers sought to impose a distinct separation between church and state. Thomas Jefferson rejected the mysticism and superstitions surrounding Christianity. Wake up AMERICA ! Your economy is in the tank and he rest of the world sees you as a bunch of finger pointing right wing BIGOTS. That is if any of the mid west acknowledges that there is a world outside the World of America.

Godless Americans have the right to their opinion. They don't want to take God out of peoples lives. They just want to separate Church and State.

Stop demonizing the atheists. They have a right to their beliefs too.

Dole is a creep. That much is clear.

Still, Kay Hagan should have known better that to risk her political future on such a meaningless appearance.

I AM A GODLESS AMERICAN and very proud of it.

However, I have a hard time understanding how Hagan could have been so stupid.

There is no winner here, so I feel sorry for the people of North Carolina: they have two hypocrites to deal with!

Kay Hagan as a representative of that area would represent the Godless American people as well. Kay Hagan has the right to attend a fundraiser with Godless American's and not have her faith or JUDGMENT questioned. I'm a vegetarian and yet I attend parties with meat eaters often, SO WHAT. So called Christians need to get their priorities straight and church & government NEEDS to remain SEPARATE even if it means taking in god we trust off money, & altering the pledge.

Stop judging that you may not be judged; for with what judgment you are judging, you will be judged;

I commend Hagan for standing up for herself, but I find it unacceptable that she should have to respond to such a ridiculous campaign smear. An individual's religious beliefs are a private thing that I don't feel are appropriate for public discussion. What's next? Are candidates going to have to defend rumors of their preference of sexual positions or acts they perform? That's how personal religion is, and I wonder how long it's going to be before the next line is crossed.

It's ironic that the repubs want less government interference in their lives...except for religion and sex,I guess..be careful what you wish for.

Now this is entertaining. How come us Virginians are stuck with one of the most boring senatorial elections in the country?

Ah, yes the true Christian, Ms Dole.
May I remind you "thou shalt not bear false witness"
Jesus' COMMAND for how we should pray...in the freakin' closet, not in public like the Pharasee's
( spelling?).
Greed is also a sin, and I think the GOP greed for power, while invoking the name of God
is about to get caught up in the wheel of Karma, if I may mix my religions here.

Or, totally misquote 'Hot Guv' Sarah Palin: "There is a special place in hell reserved for women who smear and bear false witness against other women."

There used to be so much to admire about Elizabeth Dole. She was a Harvard Law School graduate; she served in important jobs at the cabinet level. She promoted volunteering, supported her husbands aspirations, and certainly seemed to have the background and intellect to run credibly for president.

How or why she took that carefully earned reputation and tossed it in the garbage is just beyond me. What is with these people (including McCain) who will absolutely sell their souls--not to mention their self-respect-- for a vote? So at the end of the day, win or lose, Elizabeth Dole is just another cheap pol without principle.

Live and learn.

Truth be told, she did not do a good job at Transportation of the Red Cross.

The Doles have had their run and it was time for them to step aside a long, long time ago.

She did not do a very good job at the Red Cross. The press just did not report that. She was good at traveling first class and such, but substance, no.

Dole has definitely jumped on the McCain bandwagon and I hope both of them have to regret losing after waging the dirtiest campaign of their careers.
