Mccain Attacks Obama

John McCain unveiled a new attack on Barack Obama's patriotism Saturday, jumping all over - and taking out of context - remarks made yesterday in which the Democratic nominee said the Iowa Caucuses vindicated his faith in the American public.

Campaigning in Springfield, Virginia, McCain told the crowd that he had always had faith in his country and - dinging his opponent - claimed that the United States "has never had to prove anything to me."

For all the politics at play here - certainly, the GOP has won many elections painting their opponents as not loving of country - there is much to quibble with.

For starters, at various points during this campaign, McCain - whose surrogates and vice president have often gone after Obama on this front - has confirmed that he believes Obama to be a patriot. Moreover, the Republican nominee at one point in his life made comments similar to those offered by the Illinois Democrat.

Speaking about his experience in Vietnam, he described his time as a POW as one that tested and affirmed his love of country.

"I think it makes you a better person," he told Fox News' Sean Hannity in March 2008. "Obviously, it makes you love America. I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company, but probably the most important thing about it, Sean, is that I was privileged to have the opportunity to serve in the company of heroes."

Past statements aside, if one actually takes a look at what Obama said, and what he has said before, it is hard to interpret in anyway that he doubted the United States. Just look at the sentences before his "faith" remark, in which he lavishly praises the American people, who he "knew" were "decent" and "generous."

"I had confidence in the people of Iowa because I knew that the American people are a decent people and a generous people, willing to work hard and sacrifice for future generations," the Senator told a crowd in Des Moines on Friday. "No where was that truer than here in Iowa."

Those remarks, as the Obama camp pointed out Saturday afternoon, are almost identical to ones made by the Senator even before the Iowa caucus.

"Most of all, I believed in the power of the American people to be the real agents of change in this country - because we are not as divided as our politics suggests; because we are a decent, generous people willing to work hard and sacrifice for future generations; and I was certain that if we could just mobilize our voices to challenge the special interests that dominate Washington and challenge ourselves to reach for something better, there was no problem we couldn't solve - no destiny we couldn't fulfill. Ten months later, Iowa, you have vindicated that faith."

There were no screams of treason then. Rather those comments were interpreted for what they were: Obama thanking the Iowa public for exhibiting the characteristics that he believes make America, America.

"It's pathetic that John McCain would take a statement Barack Obama has been making for a year about his faith in the American people and distort it to attack his patriotism," spokesman Bill Burton said in response to McCain's attack Saturday. "Sadly, this is what we've come to expect from a desperate, dishonorable campaign that will say anything in a failed attempt to win this election."

These are tactics used by the christian conservative ideology since the birth of this country: fear, division and hate. As American, patriots and true christians, we have to put a end to this ideology of hate. Just like Bush was a puppet used by the neoconservatives, McCain is a puppet for the christian conservatives as seen by his reluctant choice of Sarah Palin.

Who do terrorists fear more?

The Democrats - Bill Clinton fired missiles into an empty tent.

The Republicans - George Bush puts troops on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Yes. Those civilians were safe under Hussein. The country is now free and starting to govern itself. Wipe the liberal sleep from your eyes and take a look at reality.

Well, if you ever bothered to read what Bin Laden and Al Qaeda have said, you'd know that bleeding the US through an endless occupation of an Arab country and the "death of a thousand cuts" has been their goal for years, and that Bush has given them exactly what they wanted, even beyond their wildest dreams, since our occupation of Iraq has demonstrated not American resolve and ability, but rather cluelessness, incompetence, and corruption of a level that makes Saddam Hussein look like a rank amateur. There's a reason why Al Qaeda is rooting for a McCain presidency - the last thing they want in the White House is a sane, rational, knowledgeable person capable of thinking through the consequences of action and of building alliances in the world. The cowboy, act-from-the-gut-and-don't-think-ahead foreign policy of Bush/McCain has been an outstanding recruitment tool for Al Qaeda, which is now just as strong as it was before 9/11 - or arguably stronger, since it can now point to its success in demonstrating American vulnerability.

The goal of any terrorist (aptly named) is to bring terror into your everyday life.

The policies of this Republican President have brought more fear into more Americans lives than any terrorist could ever hope to. He has most of the country so afraid of what's waiting in the darkness that he's convinced us to give up our civil liberties, one by one, in the name of security. So maybe it is JustCommonSense after all. Would you rather live your life free and happy, or "safe" and terrified?

al Qaeda has been attempting a war of attrition against the US. They've been succeeding, if you haven't noticed. US military is stretched to the breaking point, equipment on the ground is wearing out, US prestige in the world is falling, the budget is overwhelmed with war expenses, and al Qaeda still has a limitless supply of suicide bombers because of escalating rage against the US in the islamic world.

A $20 IED can destroy a million-dollar vehicle, plus some troops, and you want to keep sending vehicles and troops to be destroyed? Continuing to do the same thing, expecting a different result, is insanity.

Terrorists don't fear anyone, that is the part you do not understand. They know we fear them they want the person to win who best feeds that fear and that is Republicans.

Had McCain or any of his advisers bother to look up the word "vindicated" in the dictionary, they would clearly see that the sentence "...my faith in the American people was vindicated" means that Obama believed in the American people and his faith was "shown or proved to be right." It's not that they are taking his comment out of context, it's that they are assigning the wrong definition to the word.

AND... don't you just LOVE the "Presidential" demeanor of McCain as he mocks Obama, using his fingers to create "quote signs" as he sneers his "disgust"!

Should a National emergency arise, just contemplating McCain and Palin leading the Oval Office meeting that might decide all of our fates, is BEYOND terrifying!

They are not stu pid. They understand full well what the word means, and what Obama was saying. They also know that many of the voting public are not well educated, and can be manipulated, meaning that they can get some traction by twisting his words. As usual, the deficit on the Republican side isn't in intelligence, it's in honesty.

I think this is quite intentional. Remember, they're preaching to the low information voters here! Do they even KNOW how to consult a dictionary?????

Hasn't this been status quo since Bush entered office? Another Bush twin McCain is. If you were against the Iraqi war, you were called unpatriotic. If you don't wear a flag pin, you were called unpatriotic. The GOP can't get anyone into heaven and they surely can't determine who's patriotic. I guess selling one's country like they wanted to sell the ports to Dubai is being patriotic?

Mccain put country first. That means we don't need to hear how you will catch bin laden, how you will balance the budget, or your numerous other lies. We don't have to hear from your vp nominee who want to cede from the US. Just say good bye.

Obama says, if elected, he'll end devisive politics. Seems to be ignorant or arrogant. Does he think the Republican party will disband? That McCain supporters will disappear? He has been nothing but devisive with his remarks about those who cling to their guns and their religion or his tax plan that pits 5% of thenation against the other 95%, the working class against the non-working class. Save our nation. Vote McCain. He's not Georg Bush and he's not Barack Obama.

I guess what he meant is he would not be divisive from his end. Repubs, if they choose to be divisive, may of course continue to be. But do keep this in mind, many Repub Senators and Representatives called on fellow Congressmen and the people to support the President in a time of crisis*. I'd say it's time to hold you to that same call, the crisis has not abated.

*Planning on enumerating this at my leisure, after the election.

JustCommonSense..

You're kidding right???? Obama divisive and McCain unifying? All one need do is just look at the demographics at both candidates rallies. The day after Obama's culturally/racially diverse audience celebrated his nomination at his DNC speech, McCain, before 15,000 people in Ohio introduced Palin. All networks were panning the audience with nary a non-white face to be seen!

McCain and Palin both looked to Sean Hannity "Don't you believe it ladies and gentlemen! Everything Michelle Obama said (in her moving and eloquent speech at the DNC) was scripted, PURE HOLLYWOOD! NEVER forget that this is an angry black woman"!) Hannity and Rush ("It's all about race. It's ALL ABOUT RACE" and "I know how we can end unemployment in this country, just create more basketball teams"!) Limbaugh for "tips" on how to attack Obama! These two men are among the MOST divisive, hate-filled, and fear-mongering people in our nation. McCain/Palin have both used the exact phrases Hannity uses daily on his programs.

Who's divisive? Obama... he and his supporters seek to divide our country from hate and bigotry!

Hannity and Limbaugh are not hate filled or bigoted, it's you liberals that are full of hate, all I see on this blog is people making unfair, nasty remarks against Mc Cain. I this election so important that you liberals have to resort to name calling. How come Obama won't appear on Hannitys tv show?He knows Hannity will wipe the floor with himObama has gotten a free pass from the liberal media, thats why he will probably be elected.

Last time I checked , Hannity was calling Obama a terrorist socialist commy that was death to Israel. Yes that is a hand holding love thy neighbor crowd that I don't want to live next door to.

In addition... how can anyone envision a scenario where McCain could any longer be an effective leader?

With his attack ads, ugly Robo-calls and smear campaigns, he has alienated himself from colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

I guess he and Palin could just appoint Hannity, Limbaugh and O'Reilly to their cabinet....

Sorry, Senator, but the days of your pulling the "Patriot" card are long past. You let a lot of other patriots down by voting against legislature that would help them with their health, education, families, etc. Stop taking us for granted.

Sincerely, a retired military vet who voted for two Senators that did.

This from a candidate who forgot to put "Country First."

Only Republicans love this country, that is a unifying message. Patriotic americans want Exxon-mobil to get as many tax cuts as possible. If we were really patriotic, really loved our country we would encourage no taxes for anyone making over $200,000. a year. We could fund this with 25% tax on groceries. Of course people making over $200,000. would be able to deduct their food tax.
What's good for exxon-mobil is good for america.

The greatest expression of patriotism is dissent. ( some founder dude )

McCain’s and the gop’s idea of patriotism is to blindly believe that the US is infallible and if you question that you are not a patriot.
I’m a patriot because I protest my country’s commitment to threatening and following through with violence against other nations. Which can only lead to our eventual collapse.
McCain’s patriotism will destroy the country I love.

War Pigs all of’m

The quote: "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism"" has often been incorrectly attributed to Thomas Jefferson.

His closest relevant quote is “The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then.”

All these ads of McCains don't mean much as they are all designed to attract the fringe lunatics of society which of course appear to be his base. Informed people with the capacity to think for themselves won't buy into these types of ads that simply don't make sense.
