Who Will Be Russert's Permanent Replacement On "Meet The Press"?

It is probably the second-most-pressing question circulating in the salons of Washington's media elite: Who will be the permanent host, or hosts, of the NBC program "Meet the Press"?

It could be Chuck Todd, whose profile as political director of NBC News has risen noticeably during the network's coverage of the presidential campaign, but whose low-key, conversational style doesn't quite "crack the screen," as one television executive put it this week. It could be David Gregory, a correspondent who has long been familiar to NBC viewers, but who has had trouble attracting viewers to his own program, "Race for the White House," on MSNBC.

Personally, for maxium integrity, credibility and REAL news, I would like Bill Moyers, Amy Goodman or Laura Flanders. Of those mentioned, Chuck Todd seems the most likely but I think it would be ideal to alternate "The Big Four" and let the cream rise to the top.

NONE OTHER THAN LESTER HOLT I THINK LESTER DOES ANYTHING THEY NEED DONE AT NBC NEWS (I THINK HE EVEN SWEEPS UP AFTER HE DOES THE SUNDAY EVENING NEWS) HE DEFINITELY HAS THE CHARM & COULD QUICKLY DEVELOP THE "SWAGGER" TO TAKE ON THE PEOPLE WHO CALL THEMSELVES POLITICAL HEAVYWEIGHTS (GINGRICH, McCONNELL, ROVE, LIEBERMAN) & THOSE WHO REALLY ARE (CLINTON1 and 2, WEBB, J. WARNER, HOYER, LUGAR, EMANUEL, THE CA TERMINATOR). LESTER NEVER WALKED AWAY FROM A GOOD SCRUM. WATCH HIM CONSISTENTLY FOR A COUPLE SUNDAYS HE'S MORE THAN SIMPLY A NEWS-READER

I vote Katie Couric. She exposed Palin's stupidity. She reads HuffPo----- I'd love to see her wrangle the politics each sunday, I think she'd grow into it.

Chuck Todd would be good. I wouldn't watch if it were David Gregory or Brian Williams. They are both Republican SHILLS (like Brokaw)!!!

Rachel Maddow. Smart, hard-working, tough but polite. Not combative, but nobody's pushover. And she's proven she can get viewers.

I don't know the answer, but I wish Russert had been here for this campaign. He was so excited.

Looking through the comments, I vote with whoever suggested David Gergen. Even though he is a Republican, I trust his judgment more than the others. Gwen would come second, but I have seen her be very "Republican in years past," maybe because she was told to be. And most of the others, YUK, including Katie. But I was not a big fan of Tim either -- could see through his bias.

Tim was bad for years, but he had just "come around" a few months before he died!

Rich Sanchez has my vote! Check out his impressive interviews. I think he'd do a great job of not letting interviewees get away with false/lame answers to his hard questions, regardless of political affiliation etc. He's an old-fashioned skeptic who does his homework.

First off - there is no replacement for Tim. I've tried watching MTP twice since Tim left us, and couldn't stomach Brokaw. Brian Williams would be my choice - but not David Gregory or Chuck Todd (they are both repugnican to o l s).

Please, God ... anybody but Brokaw! My #1 choice is Brian Williams.

I'm with you there. Brokaw is awful. His voice is so "affected" and he is so biased he sets me on edge.

Never watched Meet the Press. Lost interest in Russert after that awful Clinton-Lazio debate.

Andrea Mitchell or Chuck Todd for me!

Hope they consider David Shuster as the permanent replacement for Tim Russert on Meet The Press. He has a wonderful interview style that gets to the details of issues.

shuster sounds like a news robot. like a canned news anchor ad nauseum. like a guy who lost his job doing infomercial voice-overs because he was too corny and dramatic. perfect for a correspondent, all wrong for a national weekly.
