On Saturday morning, Drudge trumpeted the latest one-day finding in John Zogby's latest three-day tracking poll on the presidential race. While Zogby's three-day average still shows a 5-point lead for Barack Obama over John McCain, the pollster notes on his site today that McCain led Obama by one point, 48 to 47, in the last day of surveys.

More cautious than Drudge, however, Zogby says that it's too early to declare that McCain has made decisive gains over Obama. "If McCain has a good day tomorrow, we will eliminate Obama's good day three days ago, and we could really see some tightening in this rolling average. But for now, hold on," Zogby writes.

But as the Huffington Post reported on Thursday when discussing the latest Fox News poll, Zogby has a unique methodology in his polling. He fixes -- or "weights" -- the partisan balance of his respondents, unlike most pollsters. While his admirably transparent and stable practice guarantees a certain methodological sameness from day to day, therefore making any new lead for McCain worth reporting, Zogby's partisan weighting can also raise other questions.

Asked earlier this week what the partisan weighting of their poll currently is, a Zogby aide told the Huffington Post: "Party ID remains at 38 Democratic - 36 Republican - 26 Independent. We have added a point for 18-29 [year old voters], 1.5 for African Americans, and 2 for Hispanics."

Earlier this year, Zogby told me that "party ID is a lead variable, and a major determinant in how people vote. I apply a weight to party ID, and if I see a reason for it to change, I will."

Still, Zogby's two point party ID advantage for Democrats is the smallest of any polling firm. The last four days of the Hotline/Diageo poll show anywhere from a four- to six-point advantage for Democrats -- and a simultaneous seven-point lead for Obama. Gallup's latest surveys indicate that Democrats have an 11-point advantage over Republicans in party ID (including what the firm describes as partisan "leaners").

Zogby's partisan makeup gives even less of a partisan advantage to Democrats than Fox's latest poll, which earned some skepticism, as well.

As for the day-to-day fluctuations in tracking polls, Emory University political scientist Alan Abramowitz says they are "almost entirely due" to random statistical error, or "noise."

"The trackers don't move in sync with each other -- one goes up, another goes down," he tells the Huffington Post. "This is what we are seeing today in fact. Already we see that Obama is down in Zogby but up in DailyKos and Rasmussen. No doubt we'll see more of the same in the next three days. There is no evidence here of any real trend toward McCain in either the national polls or the state polling as smart analysts like Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com and Mark Blumenthal and Charles Franklin of Pollster.com have shown."

For what it's worth, McCain lead pollster Bill McInturff sees things Zogby's way. In a Friday conference call with reporters, McInturff said "I don't see how you have party ID at negative 8 [percent for Republicans]. That's not America ... anywhere in the last generation and a half."

Aside from determining the next president, Tuesday's election might be used to settle a few scores in the polling profession, as well.

Both Zogby and Gallup have finally been starting to show real polls rather than their fantasy polls. I guess they didn't want to get punked after the election and become irrelevant.

Zogby change his position to not make himself look like a fool on november 5, pure and simple.
He is partisan...

My worst fear for this election is what will happen when people to into the privacy of the voting booth. I fear we are still a racist country and many people who say they back Obama will allow their racism to be the deciding factor at the last second. That racism may be a bigger factor than four more years of unnecessary war in Iraq, feeding the coffers of big business to the detriment of the other 98% or so of the population, more oil drilling when we should be looking for alternatives will say more about the United States than anything else. The pollsters say most people hang up on them, so I don't believe any of the polls.

Relax. I think that things are going to be fine. I suspect that most people at this point are more concerned about their future than they are about a black guy being their President. There comes a time when you have to put your needs and your family's needs ahead of inherent prejudice. I believe that is what will happen in this election.

Racism is a factor in both ways. I know some people who are voting for Obama just because he is black too. They don't even know what he stands for. So it could be a problem both ways.

Mark Twain: "There are 3 kinds of lies; lies, da*ned lies and statistics."
On another statistical note, Nader is at 2%, and Barr is at 1%. Thank God! Maybe now all the progressives voting for Obama will quit blaming us third party voters for just about everything that doesn't go their way. An early congrats to the Democrats but please remember what Lord Acton warned us about power.

Are you going to say that if those Nader voters in Florida in 2000 had voted for Gore instead of Nader, things would not have been different? Remember, Bush only "won" Florida by a little more than 500 votes.

I appreciate the congratulations. But the protest voters in Florida 2000 (along with everyone who did not vote) helped set in motion a war that has killed and maimed tens of thousands. Sometimes conscientious people who throw their votes away need to reflect on the real-world consequences of their uncompromising idealism.

Wow. I do happen to support candidates regardless of party but perhaps not enough for the likes of some. My ideals do guide me but are tempered with pragmatism; yet again, perhaps not enough for some. As for a vote being responsible for the carnage of the Iraq invasion, that logic becomes so circular we all end up with blood on our hands.

This election cycle has made me realize how skewed some polls are based on who they interview.
Zogby, Rasmussen, AP are just 3 that come to mind.

There are so many different polls, based on so many different aspects, itis making me crazy!!! I am so addicted to seeing if they change, I wake up at 4AM to see if something has changed drastically.
Does anyone know when they will start announcing the results of the election? They won't do it til after the last polls close will they?

The Times of London has a very good story about when the polls close and when they're likely to be called for a winner. Also has thoughtful commentary about what some states going to either Obama or mcCain might mean in terms of trending...

Zogby did a corrected poll for Reuters, released today - Obama 50%, McCain 44. That's all she wrote.

I've said from the very beginning, I don't BELIEVE any of the polls. Not one. There are way too many demographic differences in each poll. People are fools to believe this nonsense.

I'm in my fifties, and my experience following the polls over these years has been that they are far more often correct than not.

From Poll of Polls--

Although McCain was ahead of Obama by 1% in Zogby's one-day polling on Friday, Obama held a 10% lead in Saturday's polling. As Zogby says, "one day does not make a trend"... And the fact that the results from Saturday do not match Friday, we clearly see that Obama is in control of this election.

What hasn't been factored into any of the polls is the voters who are rah, rah, rah for Palin, but won't actually vote for her. They love her. They turn out in groves for her. The chant "drill, baby, drill" for her. But when it comes time to actually make the decision, they know that underneath all the hoopla and glitter, there is nobody home. It's fluff without substance. As much as they love her, they know deep down inside that she is not qualified to handle the serious challenges that face this nation.

People don't let up, we need to get out and volunteer and vote. I am in Minnesota, which is pretty safe for Obama now, but I am in rural MN and it is fairly republican. I was canvassing door to door yesterday and while there was support in the Hispanic areas, I didn't get a good sense in the more white middle class areas. We need to get out and do all we can. If you can still early vote, do so. Then on Tuesday, voluteer your services to get out the vote. We can do this, but we need to really push in these last days
I saw a Rev Wright ad by the repugs this morning, so they are going to pull out all the stops in these last 2 days.
If you know any college kids we really need to push them to get to the polls. I fear they are not showing up again, and we really need them.
Lets go folks

Every Republican pundit and pollster is trying to create a narrative for a stolen election. The under-current message is that the polls are wrong, McCain can win even when there is nearly double digit polls showing the opposite. And there is NO evidence of a Bradley Effect ever, in any election...the mention of that is an attempt to explain a complete reverse of the exit polls and justify another Diebold Disaster. I fear the reason the Regular Army has been activated on domestic soil is out of fear of mass rioting when the Repubs steal this election.
