John Mccain

On Saturday morning, Drudge trumpeted the latest one-day finding in John Zogby's latest three-day tracking poll on the presidential race. While Zogby's three-day average still shows a 5-point lead for Barack Obama over John McCain, the pollster notes on his site today that McCain led Obama by one point, 48 to 47, in the last day of surveys.

More cautious than Drudge, however, Zogby says that it's too early to declare that McCain has made decisive gains over Obama. "If McCain has a good day tomorrow, we will eliminate Obama's good day three days ago, and we could really see some tightening in this rolling average. But for now, hold on," Zogby writes.

But as the Huffington Post reported on Thursday when discussing the latest Fox News poll, Zogby has a unique methodology in his polling. He fixes -- or "weights" -- the partisan balance of his respondents, unlike most pollsters. While his admirably transparent and stable practice guarantees a certain methodological sameness from day to day, therefore making any new lead for McCain worth reporting, Zogby's partisan weighting can also raise other questions.

Asked earlier this week what the partisan weighting of their poll currently is, a Zogby aide told the Huffington Post: "Party ID remains at 38 Democratic - 36 Republican - 26 Independent. We have added a point for 18-29 [year old voters], 1.5 for African Americans, and 2 for Hispanics."

Earlier this year, Zogby told me that "party ID is a lead variable, and a major determinant in how people vote. I apply a weight to party ID, and if I see a reason for it to change, I will."

Still, Zogby's two point party ID advantage for Democrats is the smallest of any polling firm. The last four days of the Hotline/Diageo poll show anywhere from a four- to six-point advantage for Democrats -- and a simultaneous seven-point lead for Obama. Gallup's latest surveys indicate that Democrats have an 11-point advantage over Republicans in party ID (including what the firm describes as partisan "leaners").

Zogby's partisan makeup gives even less of a partisan advantage to Democrats than Fox's latest poll, which earned some skepticism, as well.

As for the day-to-day fluctuations in tracking polls, Emory University political scientist Alan Abramowitz says they are "almost entirely due" to random statistical error, or "noise."

"The trackers don't move in sync with each other -- one goes up, another goes down," he tells the Huffington Post. "This is what we are seeing today in fact. Already we see that Obama is down in Zogby but up in DailyKos and Rasmussen. No doubt we'll see more of the same in the next three days. There is no evidence here of any real trend toward McCain in either the national polls or the state polling as smart analysts like Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com and Mark Blumenthal and Charles Franklin of Pollster.com have shown."

For what it's worth, McCain lead pollster Bill McInturff sees things Zogby's way. In a Friday conference call with reporters, McInturff said "I don't see how you have party ID at negative 8 [percent for Republicans]. That's not America ... anywhere in the last generation and a half."

Aside from determining the next president, Tuesday's election might be used to settle a few scores in the polling profession, as well.

Even if you think Obama has it wrapped up...VOTE!
Even if you think your vote won't count because you live in a red state...VOTE!
Even if the election is called before your state in the west has closed the polls...VOTE!

It's very important that we give Obama not just a win but a landslide, so the Republicans' dirty tricks can't steal the election. Let's show the world that America has learned something in the last eight years!

VOTE OBAMA/BIDEN.

Today's Zogby poll shows Obama back with a 6-point lead. As I suspected, his one-day samples are too small to read anything into. McCain is pinning his hopes on random statistical noise.

Franny. No kidding. I want the smart one too. McCain graduated rock bottom in a class over 800 from Annapolis. W. and his family connections got him into Yale. U . of Texas told him to get lost. We have had the dummy and his dummies for 8 long years. Enough is enough. People are opening their wallets and moths are flying out! Vote your pocketbook and do not vote against your own best interests.

For me a Goldwater repug, I made that decession in 1992! I looked at the financial path they were taking... offshoring MFG, tax cuts financed with trilions in debt ( devalued dollar the result, a tax delay, not a real cut) and a war against the middleclass. Bill Clinton and the High tech boom saved us for a bit.. and then those jobs were shipped overseas under BUSH! From one not so mindlless free trade agreement ( the Idea was to strenghten Mexico and solve the immigration problem.. it backfired) to one bad agreement after another..

They turned a Producer economy into a consummer economy.. the only new product was financial paper that has now gone poof!

Regards

Believe it or not it was Reagan that moved me to the Democratic party. Seeing my kids with a real fear that they would never grow up because of a nuclear war made me realize that fear is not the answer.

I'm surprised people talk about Drudge so much. His blog is just the Internet equivalent of Fox news. When he had the blogosphere pretty much to himself, sure; but now that far better (and more diverse) blogs have appeared, it's time to remove his bookmark. He's earned it.

They talk about Drudge because his page has the appearance of something substantial, probably more so than Fox News. Fox is almost entirely a 24-7 entertainment show for the right in the form of various "news shows," complete with anchor costumes and graphics and so forth, but because of the TV-drama aspect of it (I think) it's a little more laughable than Drudge at first. Drudge has that stripped-down serious look that gives you a kind of no-spin appearance, but of course it's all a ruse. We'll see how accurate Drudge was on the polls once the election's over (provided we don't have too many "machine problems" or too many "felons" or "nonexact matches" that end up giving McCain a win).

Regardless of what the polls say, I'm awfully proud to be an American this election year! I've voted since JFK and I've never seen anything like the numbers of people turning out to vote this year. I'm watching people who won't even stand in line at the supermarket happily stand in lines for hours so they can cast their votes. It's something that has come about because of this historic election but history will judge this as the election wherein Americans awakened to the power of their most precious right. You all rock, Americans! Obama-Biden '08

All the Zogby tracker segment from Friday tells us is that the kinds of people who stay home on Halloween are more likely to vote for McCain than the population that responds to polls on evenings that don't involve widespread parent-child activities outside the home.

Any discussion of this poll has to acknowledge that, even if pollsters can usually get a representative sample (which is debatable), it's impossible to get a decent sample on a highly unusual evening such as Halloween.

Slipping from Obama's grasp:

Missouri
Virginia
Pennsylvania

CNN receives complaints from elderly voters: lines too long, discriminates against them...state board of elections hearing many of the same complaints.

Like the caucuses in their blatant lack of fairness to elderly voters and work shift workers, early voting is proving to be a major problem.

I know. Its causing a major problem for the GOP since the majority of early voters are supporting Obama.

From what I understand, the polls have been over-sampling for new, first time voters.

Polls/Schmolls...in all my years of voting I've never been polled even once. And I've been through 9 presidential campaigns. Not when I had standard landline and not now since I have a VOIP line. And I always had a telephone book listed number. They always say 'likely' voters. But what happens when the 'unlikely' voters show up? It's apparent this year that the 'unlikely' are registering and voting in droves. I believe the political analysts will be studying the results of this election, it's implication for future campaigns (the role of the internet and new media outlets), and how polling data is retrieved and analyzed for years to come.

It isn't surprising that you (or any other individual) has never been polled. Polls are just a sample of the population. Just because you have never been polled does not mean they are not valid statistically. They only contact a few tens of thousands out of over 300 million citizens. Your chances of being polled may be better than winning $100 in the lottery, but not by much.

Zogby's been wrong before and right before. They all have. The pollsters build in protection -- using widely varying polls so one or the other is right and it looks after an election that the pollsters do get it right, even though some may get it wrong. They create things like "the Bradley effect", meaning when they get an election wrong, its because those polled lied to them. And don't forget Hillary -- according to the pollsters she won.

In this election, the truth is simple -- either the country is too racist to elect a highly qualified Democratic Party ticket over a wholly unqualified Republican ticket on any legitimate meter for determining the qualifications of Presidents and Vice Presidents or it is not. Obama, the lower middle class kid who became Harvard Law Review editor, is so far superior to McCain, arguably the stupidest guy to ever graduate a US Military Academy (Annapolis) with his class rank of 894 out of 899, that those interested in electing the most qualified person have no choice but to vote for Obama. Add McCain's record of opposing MLK Day, his continuing ties, through his wife, with those around Keating and his role in Keating itself, and his support of $10 billion per month for Iraq while we're nearly bankrupt, his unpatriotic act of putting Palin so close to the Presidency given his actual health and family health history and there's no choice.

Only racism explains a McCain victory and we'll know Wednesday.
