America Blog:

Liddy Dole deserves to lose for so many reasons. But, in the end, Dole really did herself in with that "godless" ad she ran against Kay Hagan. Public Policy Polling's blog, (PPP is based in North Carolina) had this analysis:

It is pretty clear to me based on our polling this weekend that Kay Hagan will be headed to the US Senate unless something very bizarre happens in the next 72 hours. While numbers in the races for President and Governor are basically unchanged from last week there has been clear movement away from Elizabeth Dole, a sign that her 'Godless Americans' ad is blowing up in her face.

I hope these culture wars going on in our country are finally coming to an end. I'm tired off all these make belive wedge issues dividing everybody. Hopefully, this is all a sign that we as citizens are learning to look past all the b.s. and elect our leaders based on actual merits.

Sounds like a good idea, but sorry to say that these wedge issues will be around for a very long time, because so many of us are so gullible.

So that's what did it! Not meaning to be unkind, but Liddy's face looks like something blew up in it! Whatever happened to aging gracefully. I guess all that internal nastiness eventually finds its way to the surface.

Bye bye, Liddy. Time to leave.

It's time for a new voice and new and better government in Washington. I truly hope this election is instrumental in helping to get rid of old fossils from D.C. whose tired rhetoric and dirty smears no longer work to fool the majority of voters to support them. There will always be some who buy their bull, but hopefully not enough to get them elected or re-elected.

Last time the polls showed a move for Hagan after the first "Godless" ad, Dole doubled down and did it again. I guess it is time for a third, more hysterical, ad.

I agree that religion has taken us to the extremes. As many have said, I am waiting for the time when an agnostic or an atheist will be elected President of the country. All we need is the right person for the job(easier said than done). Considering the various problems that we face, I do not think that religion is going to solve them. We need the person who has the right skill set and the right set of people to help him in the different areas. We are not selecting a preacher for a church. The world is changing and we need to adapt to it.

While I disapprove of Liddy Dole for many reasons, I do not think that Kay Hagen gave the right response. However, given the scenario in her state, she is probably giving what they expect. Liddy Dole was the head of the Red Cross until 1991, and did little for that organization. She must be held responsible for the past. I hope that she disappears.

Dole is a GOP dinosaur, but I wish Hagan would have responded differently and said her religion is none of Dole's business and has no place in politics...the same way McCain SHOULD have responded to the old crazy lady accusing O of being Muslim. McCain SHOULD have said what Colin Powell did'; he's not Muslim, but so what if he were.

I can't wait for Wednesday morning and this long nightmare to be over.

She wanted to name an AIDS funding bill after Jesse Helms. For that reason alone she deserves a humiliating end to her career.

As an Atheist, I of course think that Dole should lose, however Kay Hagan's response having
to reiterate that she is a good christian also is wrong. She should not have to defend whatever
she believes in . That is what the religious right has done to us - its a form of religious
McCarthyism and its gone to stop

This is very similar to situations in which a candidate is "accused" of being gay. If they're not gay, they want to deny it, but denying it makes it sound as if being gay is a negative. (Most of us, of course, remember the Seinfeld line, "Not that there's anything wrong with that!") The sad truth is that in an election, being gay or being an atheist--or being Muslim for that matter--is a negative. It's hard to win if you fit those categories.

As an atheist, I don't know what I would do if I were running for office: Acknowledge who I am and lose the election, or deny who I am and lose my self-respect. I don't blame politicians who take the first road if they honestly feel that they have something to give to their community.

Being called an atheist shouldn't be considered an insult... unless you aren't one.
It is the same as the Rs calling Obama a Muslim. Not an insult, just a lie.

I'm not insulted by being called an Atheist. Actually, I am proud of it.

I am an Atheist, also. I will say that I have nothing against the various religions, except when the religionists try to force their religious views on me and my country, and that seems to be all the time.

This battle has been going on for a very long time, and will continue to go on for another very long time. I'm talking evolution here, but I think that man's innate intelligence will eventually win out. It just needs some fine tuning. Again, I'm talking Evolution. I wish us and our descendants luck.

No, you put Obama on par with God, just to tear him down. He never did said he was on par with God. That's just some nonsense that you right wing wackos made up.

If your god made this very intricate and perfect Universe. He surely wouldn't want to entertain this garbage that you guys are creating. You're on your own with that.

If I believed in a god, he wouldn't be as weird as you guys make him out to be.

What I always find really ridiculous about American voters is that they consider a candidate's belief in god important. A politician should not be passing policies based on their religion, it's suppose to be a seperation of church and state. I could care less what religion a politician practices in their private life, but a sure fire way to stop me from voting for them is to bring it into their campaign.

As an atheist, I'm tired of "godless" being used as an epithet. I hope Dole goes down in flames.

kylennblack, Intelligence has been winning over the eons, despite some very profound setbacks. We have seen some of it, but take comfort knowing that intelligence will triumph in the long run. Hope that helps. I would like to come back to see humanity cast off it's shackles and bask in the sunlight. I think we'll do it, if ignorance doesn't destroy us before hand.

I just had one of those Eureka moments. It just dawned on me that there are those who would rather see humanity destroyed, rather than see it be free of it's shackles.

Sometimes I wish that I believed in a god, so I could pray that it would deliver us from hatefulness, although I know deep inside that it would not help at all. It's just going to take time.

Be proud that you are an Atheist. There are a lot of us out here. It's just that until now, we haven't had any way to communicate with each other.

Just keep shining the light on evilness. When it becomes not ok to be evil, then humanity will take a big leap forward.
