Wash Post: Obama, Democrats Hold A Commanding Position

Barack Obama and the Democrats hold a commanding position two days before Tuesday's election, with the senator from Illinois leading in states whose electoral votes total nearly 300 and with his party counting on significantly expanded majorities in the House and Senate.

John McCain is running in one of the worst environments ever for a Republican presidential nominee. The senator from Arizona has not been in front in any of the 159 national polls conducted over the past six weeks. His slender hopes for winning the White House now depend on picking up a major Democratic stronghold or fighting off Obama's raids on most of the five states President Bush won four years ago that now lean toward the Democrat. He also must hold onto six other states that Bush won in 2004 but are considered too close to call.

Do you think the mccain supporters really believe everything the GOP is saying about O? Or do you think they have sense enough to know that these are just political tactics?

I think they really believe all of it, but maybe i've just been living in texas too long. they just released a poll here saying that 23% of texans believe O's a mu$lim. my husband has friends who support mccain and they keep saying they think he supports terrori$t$, and that he will give give away all of their money to people on welfare. And these are college educated people, not country bumpkins.

People assume that a college education broadens horizons, but it depends where one goes to school and who one associates with while there.

Even if one assumes that many college professors are liberal, which is spurious at best, how many students take those classes? How many who do just take them and learn nothing or refuse to change their opinion?

There was a day when people had a respect for education and a professor had more of an influence, but now students view themselves on par with educators, so they aren't going to be influenced one way or the other.

With all the special interest groups at schools, students don't have to interact with others, which is where one really learns. Even if someone gains a different perspective, when they leave school they usually go back to where they are from, or they work in very conservative environments and feel the need to fit in.

So, don't be surprised that college educated Texans are among the group who believe that Obama is a Muslim. Oddly enough, college can teach one how not to think as much as it can teach one how to think.

And trust me, going to college does not take the country bumpkin out of someone. Just like it does not take the thug out of someone or the racist out of someone. Wealth does not make one necessarily less ignorant, and neither does going to college. At our core, we are who we are.
