ST. PAUL, Minn. — Months of tension between Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and his Democratic rival, Al Franken, spilled into their last debate Sunday night as they traded heated accusations about allegations made in a lawsuit against the incumbent.

It started immediately, as Coleman denied taking money or gifts from supporters without disclosing it. That charge stems from sworn statements in a lawsuit filed last week in Texas, claiming Coleman's friend and donor Nasser Kazeminy funneled $75,000 to a business that employs Coleman's wife in order to enrich the senator.

"The answer is no," Coleman said when asked whether the allegations were true. He then swung back to his claim that Franken is responsible for a TV ad about the allegations, which shows a clip of reporters asking Coleman about the alleged payments to his wife's employer and which the senator said defames her. Franken's campaign isn't running the ad, which is paid for by Democrats in Washington.

"You have an ad that's defaming my wife," Coleman said. "I think there's a line in this business. You can take any shot you want at the candidate. Mr. Franken, rather than rejecting it, is promoting it."

Franken replied that Coleman must answer questions about the allegations _ and rejected the idea that discussion of it is an attack on Laurie Coleman.

"This is not about Norm Coleman's wife," Franken said. "This is about Sen. Coleman's political sugar daddy."

But that didn't end the recriminations between Coleman and Franken. For the first time after five debates, Coleman personally criticized Franken on an issue other Republicans hammered for months _ that statements and writings in his previous careers as a comedian and writer betrayed an angry sensibility unsuited to the U.S. Senate.

"I think folks have a right to look at the character, to look at the record," Coleman said. "Jokes about rape, is that a line? Writing pornography for Playboy, is that a line? Calling a Supreme Court justice sexist, is that a line?"

The sniping between Coleman and Franken left a wide opening for the Independence Party's Dean Barkley, who presented his third-place candidacy as an alternative for voters tired of what he called "the most negative campaign in Minnesota's history."

"I ask people, do you think either Al or Norm will change the way Washington works?" Barkley said. "That's a question you have to ask yourself."

Once the candidates got down to issues, they staked out what has become familiar turf in the past few weeks of the campaign. Asked their top priority if they were elected, each candidate had a different answer.

Franken said his main goal would be "getting the economy back on track." Coleman said he wanted to be a part of changing the divisive tone in Washington and accomplishing common goals.

Barkley, who managed Jesse Ventura's shockingly successful campaign for governor in 1998, warned that the country needed to rein in spending. He noted that in all of his past runs for elected office, dating to 1992, he has warned of the dangers of a spiraling deficit.

Paul Wellstone represented the best of Minnesota. I'm sorry to say that I lost interest in Minnesota after his death. Perhaps things will look up a bit if Norm Coleman is sent packing this time.

I hope voters understand and appreciate how very very smart Al Franken is. He is funny and has a great sense of the humor in everyday life but he is no mindless clown or glib thorn in Bill O'Reilly's loofah. He is one of the best informed politicians around and let's face it..the US Senate, which is not spilling over with great minds, could do with a new, brainy guy on the floor.. Unlike Fred Thompson and the guy from Love Boat, Al Franken is not an out-of-work actor looking for a job in Washington. Franken not only reads books, he writes them as well. He has a keen, inquisitive mind and surrounds himself with the best and the brightest ..He is not seeking a Senate seat for the Pension Plan or the perks..or the money. He truly believes he can make a difference and bring much-needed change to the country. I really hope the people of Minnesota will give him the chance.

Cindy McCain continued to receive millions form Keating after the Keating five scandal. It was what kept McCain safe form charges of accepting bribes. The money did not go to him, it went to his wife. Enron money didn't go to Phil Gramm, it went to his wife. This is an old Republican dirty trick. Pay off the family, not the candidate. It keeps it all technically legal.

Its time for a change!

Franken has had it hard in Minnesota because of the coolness of the people. Everybody knows Minnesota Nice is really Minnesota Ice.

Anyway, Al Franken would be a great addition to the Senate – a true maverick – but he was let down by his own party. The politically connected daughter of a famous judge made a last-second effort to wrest the nomination from him, and the GOP used her ads against Franken. Also, a high-profile US Rep from St. Paul, Betty McCollum, publicly questioned Franken's character and worthiness. This was early summer, after he had the nomination, and it had a hugely negative effect on Franken's ability to grab Obama momentum. In fact, he hasn't quite captured it to this day.

If Al loses, which is a real possibility, the Democratic Party of Minnesota can take the blame. These are hillbillies in flannel shirts and Norm Coleman plays them for fools, and they could never come to grips with what Franken did for a living as a writer and performer. It's a shame, but that's Minnesota, folks.

Oh, and don't be surprised if Michelle Bachman holds onto her seat. She's Governor Palin's twin and the majority of the you-betcha people she represents love her. We'll see.

I especially wish Franken luck. He's a good man and they have made him into something subhuman, though in real life he has represented family values with much more dignity than Norm Coleman.

I will vote for Al Franken tomorrow. I have been following him for years, going back to when he had a TV show with Arianna. I think he is honorable and sincere and would make a great senator. But he also has to live with his legacy as a comedian. I personally don't mind his edgy humor, as long as the message behind it is sound. But there are those voters who don't care for that style and you can't expect them to not react to it, even though it is distorted in ads. I also believe that Norm Coleman did get $75,000 in under the table contributions and hope he is indicted for it after he loses the election.

I live in Bachmanns district and she was 1 point ahead of her opponent in one poll this weekend.I do hope Al and Elwyn win but I do have to point out there were a large number of absentee ballots cast this year before the Bachmann anti-american comments and Colemans $75,000 lawsuit. I can't help how many would have changed their votes. I agree with you that Bachmann is Palin s twin she has a crazy preacher who prays over her and God told her to run for office. Bachmanns husband is a psychologist who will try to get the gay out of you. I hope to wake up to some good news wednesday morning.

Nasser Kazeminy's campaign contribution disclosure forms indicate NJK Holding as his employer. A review of USASpending.gov reveals government payments to NJK Holding totaling $328,082 beginning in 2003 when Coleman took office.

Kazeminy's joint investment with Goodman in United Energy Corp has also benefited from government contracts. A review of USASpending.gov reveals government payments to United Energy Corp totaling $465,103 since Coleman took office in 2003. United Energy had previously received $222,766 between 2000-2002.

John Goodman's campaign contribution disclosure forms indicate Sage Co. and The Goodman Group as his employers. A review of USASpending.gov reveals government payments to Sage Co totaling $346,309 since Coleman took office in 2003. Sage also received government payments of $174,000 between 2000-2002.

That totals $1,139,494 in government contracts between 2003-2008.

It's not like that, they are just friends.

I attended this so-called debate last night in St. Paul. There were about 1000 people in attendance @ the Fitzgerald Theater. I wouldn't call bickering between to candidates a debate. From the very beginning Norm Coleman was on the defensive. He attempted to blame Franken for smearing his wife's name in a political commercial. Basically, there are allegations of bribes being paid to Coleman via his wife's employer from a Texas businessman. Ironically, the charges stem from a REPUBLICAN's lawsuit.

Franken was very humorous as usual. The "debate" sucked. Norm Coleman is a great politician, all style and no substance. He uses double talk constantly. For example, the mass media has reported that their will be a $6 billion deficit in funding for the US Pell Grant or the equivalent of a day in Iraq. Coleman went on to say that he was a strong proponent of the Pell Grant and was willing to do what was necessary to fund this program. However, he was claiming tat Franken was a tax and spend candidate for wanting to fund programs that include the US Pell Grant. On the other hand, Al Franken brings some new ideas and is very capable of being a good representative of the interests of Minnesota. He had the advantage of NOT being a politician to hsi advantage. Finally, Dean Barkley was pretty straight-forward in answering questions. .

I predict a victory for Al Franken @ 45%, Coleman 40%, and Dean Barkely %15. We shall see..

I would go with your prediction.

I've long thought that Barkley will take from Coleman support rather than Franken, simply because I think there's a consensus here that Coleman has to go. Not everyone is sold on Franken, not like, say, Amy Klobuchar in 1996, but Al at least has enthusiastic supporters. There's absolutely no enthusiasm for Coleman, which is why I would give Franken the edge.

Correction: like Amy Klobuchar in 2006, when she ran for Senate, not 1996.

Coleman only won because of the unfortunate death of Paul Wellstone. He has been nothing but a toady for President Bush. He has done little if anything for us Minnesotans. Franken will bring back intelligence and passion to that senatorial position. Go Franken!!

Franken would make a nice addition to Washington. At this horrible time in our nation we could use more people with a sense of humor. You can see it in Obama and Biden and even Hillary. Without humor we are never going to be able to get through the tough times. This is what is lacking in McCain/Palin. Too angry and confrontational for me.

I love Al too, and plan on voting for him, but I was very turned off by his behavior in the debate, actually both of them acted like petty children. I've been very excited to vote for Al, but the sneer on his face, and the tone of his voice were just downright nasty. I'm hoping it's the strain of this close campaign.
It's to close to call here in MN, so that must be stressful!
