ST. PAUL, Minn. — Months of tension between Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and his Democratic rival, Al Franken, spilled into their last debate Sunday night as they traded heated accusations about allegations made in a lawsuit against the incumbent.

It started immediately, as Coleman denied taking money or gifts from supporters without disclosing it. That charge stems from sworn statements in a lawsuit filed last week in Texas, claiming Coleman's friend and donor Nasser Kazeminy funneled $75,000 to a business that employs Coleman's wife in order to enrich the senator.

"The answer is no," Coleman said when asked whether the allegations were true. He then swung back to his claim that Franken is responsible for a TV ad about the allegations, which shows a clip of reporters asking Coleman about the alleged payments to his wife's employer and which the senator said defames her. Franken's campaign isn't running the ad, which is paid for by Democrats in Washington.

"You have an ad that's defaming my wife," Coleman said. "I think there's a line in this business. You can take any shot you want at the candidate. Mr. Franken, rather than rejecting it, is promoting it."

Franken replied that Coleman must answer questions about the allegations _ and rejected the idea that discussion of it is an attack on Laurie Coleman.

"This is not about Norm Coleman's wife," Franken said. "This is about Sen. Coleman's political sugar daddy."

But that didn't end the recriminations between Coleman and Franken. For the first time after five debates, Coleman personally criticized Franken on an issue other Republicans hammered for months _ that statements and writings in his previous careers as a comedian and writer betrayed an angry sensibility unsuited to the U.S. Senate.

"I think folks have a right to look at the character, to look at the record," Coleman said. "Jokes about rape, is that a line? Writing pornography for Playboy, is that a line? Calling a Supreme Court justice sexist, is that a line?"

The sniping between Coleman and Franken left a wide opening for the Independence Party's Dean Barkley, who presented his third-place candidacy as an alternative for voters tired of what he called "the most negative campaign in Minnesota's history."

"I ask people, do you think either Al or Norm will change the way Washington works?" Barkley said. "That's a question you have to ask yourself."

Once the candidates got down to issues, they staked out what has become familiar turf in the past few weeks of the campaign. Asked their top priority if they were elected, each candidate had a different answer.

Franken said his main goal would be "getting the economy back on track." Coleman said he wanted to be a part of changing the divisive tone in Washington and accomplishing common goals.

Barkley, who managed Jesse Ventura's shockingly successful campaign for governor in 1998, warned that the country needed to rein in spending. He noted that in all of his past runs for elected office, dating to 1992, he has warned of the dangers of a spiraling deficit.

If it weren't for nepotism, the republican run govt would be employeeless.

"Coleman said he wanted to be a part of changing the divisive tone in Washington and accomplishing common goals."

This is the exact same thing he said he was going to do when he first ran for the Senate in 2002.

How's that going for ya, Normie? Not too good, huh? Maybe if you would have done that instead of crawling up G.W. Bush's @$$ in an effort to see how hard you could kiss it.

Here's the bio page from Al Franken's webpage:

He's a smart (& witty) guy who cares about truth, Minnesota, & helping the little guy.

As he likes to say, "I'm the only New York Jew in this race who actually grew up in MInnesota."

I wish I could vote for him, but since I'm in CA., I sent money.

Go Franken!

hey don't slam MN, young people voted for the wrestler in droves, apparently they didn't know better. He promised to help them with their tuition, so they came out in droves, and as soon as he was elected, he went back on his word. I don't know one normal adult who voted for him. His legacy to us is legal fireworks. Do you know how annoying it is every Friday night to listen to your neighbors blow off big loud explosions over and over again. I don't know what the attraction of that is, but they can do it over and over again, driving all the neighborhood pets mad. I swear at Jesse everytime it happens.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:43 PM on 11/03/2008

That is absolutely not true. During the debates Ventura said he wouldn't help tuition for college because if people really wanted to go they'd find a way even if meant having to go in the military and get in on the GI bill. Also legal fireworks in Minnesota don't explode, they just makes lots of colors and maybe whistling, and are not aerial.

I'm not from Minnesota but I also gave Al money. He's very smart. I think he'll be a great Senator. It crack's me up that they want to use thing's against him that were part of his comedy career.

How many nice, ordinary Minnesotans enjoy standup comedy, SNL and (*gasp*) Playboy? I guess each and every one of them, by extension, is unfit for public office?

The odd thing is that Franken won't be the funniest guy in the Senate--or even from his home state. Have you ever heard Amy Klochubar. She's funnier than Franken and smarter, too.

I'm voting for Franken and I urge my fellow Minnesotans to do likewise. He's intelligent, articulate, informed on the issues, and will serve us well.
Coleman, on the other hand, went from being a campus political activist to being an Allman Brothers roadie. He then became mayor of St. Paul. Somewhere along the line, he switched his party loyalties and became a Republican. After serving his masters slavishly for six years, lapdog Norm has attempted to disavow his servitude to the Bush administration, much as Cheney has done.
Put aside the scandals, the strategically timed lawsuits and Coleman's smear campaign on Franken.
It comes down to who they are.
Franken's first loyalties are to the state, its people and the nation.
Coleman's record shows that he is only loyal to himself.

I use to watch Franken on the Sundance channal, when they aired Air America live. The first time I watched him, I was impressed by how smart he is when he is not doing his comedy. He did write that great book that disclosed Rush Limbaugh as a "Big Fat Idiot".... and that alone took brass ones.
If Minn is like our state... you guys need a smart guy .......with brass ones.

That is hilarious. I do hope that Al Franken wins that seat. He would be a refreshly honest addition to the Senate.

Al Franken is, frankly, more qualified than many senatorial candidates. He's Harvard educated, he has a great talent for understanding the mood of the country - something that made him a successful satirical writer, and he understands how the government works - something that a lot of our legislators seem not to. He is the first politician I've seen who speaks to his crowds honestly and as if they have intelligence, rather than pandering to them. The last time I saw him speak, he received a question about the financial collapse, and he spoke to that person about credit default swaps - a major factor in the mess we're in now - and he did so with full understanding of what he was speaking about.

Remember for repugs a degree from Harvard or such "elitist" institution unqualifies someone, they only like candidates who go to 6 colleges before they manage to graduate or bottom of class in Naval Academy, or even better yet, unlicensed plumbers!

Franken is as qualified for the job of sitting on your rear all day, blathering, spending taxpayers' money, and collecting a posh retirement plan, as anyone else in the Senate. In fact, we will get our dollar's worth out of him, as he will do all that while being as amusing as hell.

The guy worked his way up, and he's for the little guy. And unlike Coleman, who the Repubs drfted from NY, Franken actually grew up in MN.

It's Coleman who took money on the sly from TX businessmen - just google it.

But thanks for playing.

We had a party-changer Senator in Colorado: Ben Nighthorse Campbell. We called him "Ben Change-Horse Campbell". Rode a Harley. Was Native American. Likability ended there.

Good luck Al.

I love these Republicans talking about changing Washington. Where have they been for the past 8 years? Why the change of heart now? What are they going to change themselves? Did they just wake-up and say I have to change or are they just running scare of losing an election?

These Republicans lead by Karl Rove have been the most bipartisan and divisive in the history of the country.

There were no democrats in the cabinet. They would not ever even consider democrat ideas.

It is just too funny listening to these Republicans talk about change. They are the ones that need change. They are the fox in the hen house.
