ST. PAUL, Minn. — Months of tension between Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and his Democratic rival, Al Franken, spilled into their last debate Sunday night as they traded heated accusations about allegations made in a lawsuit against the incumbent.

It started immediately, as Coleman denied taking money or gifts from supporters without disclosing it. That charge stems from sworn statements in a lawsuit filed last week in Texas, claiming Coleman's friend and donor Nasser Kazeminy funneled $75,000 to a business that employs Coleman's wife in order to enrich the senator.

"The answer is no," Coleman said when asked whether the allegations were true. He then swung back to his claim that Franken is responsible for a TV ad about the allegations, which shows a clip of reporters asking Coleman about the alleged payments to his wife's employer and which the senator said defames her. Franken's campaign isn't running the ad, which is paid for by Democrats in Washington.

"You have an ad that's defaming my wife," Coleman said. "I think there's a line in this business. You can take any shot you want at the candidate. Mr. Franken, rather than rejecting it, is promoting it."

Franken replied that Coleman must answer questions about the allegations _ and rejected the idea that discussion of it is an attack on Laurie Coleman.

"This is not about Norm Coleman's wife," Franken said. "This is about Sen. Coleman's political sugar daddy."

But that didn't end the recriminations between Coleman and Franken. For the first time after five debates, Coleman personally criticized Franken on an issue other Republicans hammered for months _ that statements and writings in his previous careers as a comedian and writer betrayed an angry sensibility unsuited to the U.S. Senate.

"I think folks have a right to look at the character, to look at the record," Coleman said. "Jokes about rape, is that a line? Writing pornography for Playboy, is that a line? Calling a Supreme Court justice sexist, is that a line?"

The sniping between Coleman and Franken left a wide opening for the Independence Party's Dean Barkley, who presented his third-place candidacy as an alternative for voters tired of what he called "the most negative campaign in Minnesota's history."

"I ask people, do you think either Al or Norm will change the way Washington works?" Barkley said. "That's a question you have to ask yourself."

Once the candidates got down to issues, they staked out what has become familiar turf in the past few weeks of the campaign. Asked their top priority if they were elected, each candidate had a different answer.

Franken said his main goal would be "getting the economy back on track." Coleman said he wanted to be a part of changing the divisive tone in Washington and accomplishing common goals.

Barkley, who managed Jesse Ventura's shockingly successful campaign for governor in 1998, warned that the country needed to rein in spending. He noted that in all of his past runs for elected office, dating to 1992, he has warned of the dangers of a spiraling deficit.

Rein in spending after we get out of this recession. Reining in spending during a recession is a Herbert Hoover type of policy.

If a doctor ordered the same medicine for you no matter the symptom, you could probably sue for malpractice. Can we do the same for politicians?

"Rein in spending after we get out of this recession. Reining in spending during a recession is a Herbert Hoover type of policy."

Well put. Most people do not know that reining in spending during the Depression greatly worsened the situation, putting millions of people in very real misery.

Franken has been a political pundit for years, on Air America; his political writings are also around for anyone to read (I loved his "Liars" book.). He may not have held office, but he's no newcomer to the issues.

I didn't like all of his comedy, but that was entertainment. His politics have been sound (again, see his Air America time.)

Seems funny for a state who elected Jesse Ventura to put someone down for having a previous career in wacky entertainment.

Likewise, having an entertainment career didn't hurt Schwarzenegger or Reagan.

I hope Franken wins - that other guy's precisely the kind of slimeball bum we need to throw out of Congress.
I sent him a few bucks, and I hope he wins.

an "angry sensibility unsuited to the US Senate"??? Sounds like a description of McCain.

The only time I hope I read the name "Coleman" after tuesday is when looking at my ugly 20-year old camp stove. Or news of the trial.

Paul Wellstone was a great man -- and I know he would have been a huge supporter of Al Franken.
I live in Texas and have no stake in the outcome in Minnesota, but when I got an email from moveon.org a couple of days back, asking me to donate to Franken's campaign, I didn't hesitate. Now, I've used all the disposable income I could for campaign contributions this year -- put off car repairs, and the kids will have a "welfare christmas" -- but it will be worth every dime if we can just get Obama in the Whitehouse and a kick some Rethuglicans out of Washington!

Anybody who would contribute to ANY political campaign in lieu of his family's Christmas (or, for that matter, his dog's dinner) has a screw loose. Next time, just write a check to any cable news outlet, or your local network affiliate. After all, that's where all this campaign cash ends up.

Nice personal attack there. I applaud stsw531's priorities - he's investiong in a better country for his kids, someting that will far outlast the latest toy.

I hope he and his family have a fantastic Christmas, homespun or not - in our new and improved USA!

Go Franken!

Nice logic Uncle. Go for materialism over the good of their families future. Great family values again demonstrated by right wing whack jobs that know NOTHING about family values. Anybody that thinks Christmas is about how much money you spend knows NOTHING about Christmas. Not to mention it doesn't sound like Uncle knows squat about campaign money either.

I hold a toast for stsw531 as somebody who really knows what's more important to the future for their children. Not to mention that's how ya stick it to the man! NICE JOB!

We all have a stake in the outcome of every state. We will depend on a Dem majority in the house and senate in order to get anything done.

Norm Coleman has to go. We need a real comedian in the Senate, not just a doltish jester. Coleman couldn't debate his way out of a paper bag. He is toast.

There is an Independent candidate on the Minnesota ballot that could result in Coleman skeaking out a win, however Obama's large numbers and straight Democratic ticket casters should give it to Franken. Franken will be a "serious" Senator for his beloved Minnesota.

Why is there always an implicit assumption that third-party candidates work against the Democrats? I don't think it's true at all. Most of the weirdos who vote for third-party candidates would never vote for any Democrat.

There's a difference between working against the Democrat, and handing the Republican 6 more years in the Senate. As I said about Ventura's proposed run, this is the latter. Barkley seems to be a good man. I hope he's proud if Coleman wins.

Plus Minnesota voted for a third party with Ventura and got burned.
Ventura wasn't a true third party candidate, he was a party of himself, and the third party people got hoodwinked.

You cannot count on straight ticket votes from Minnesota. Minnesotans have a long tradition of supporting third party candidates. Currently, Al Franken is only polling at about 67% Democratic support. Barkley is garnering support from BOTH Republicans and Democrats. He will end up with about 16-18% of the overall vote, and it won't just be weirdos who are voting for him.

This thing with the spouse getting a plum job is so typical now. How does that not change your allegience as a Senator? At what point does that become corruption. Of course these guys have figured out all the loopholes, they are pretty smart after all.

Unless they are looking at something like healthcare, and then all of the subteties are lost on them. Witness the "you should get the coverage that we get" line of Barak's. Udder foolishness.

So, you're okay with corruption and with politicians having health care while the rest of us don't?

Just trying to parse your "hey, what are you gonna do?" line of logic here.

How about we enforce the law and spread the health?

Eh?

What part of "money in Senator's family's pocket => Senator in illegal contributor's pocket" don't you get?

If it were a valid contribution, the contributor wouldn't have tried so hard to hide it.

Throw the bum out in the clearest way possible. Franken has the best hope of doing that, and he has spoken for the little guy for years now.

I'm not saying the 3rd party guy is a bad guy, but let's be realistic about the numbers.

Go Franken.

Remember Coleman is a former Democrat from NY, hand picked by Cheney and Rove, that would make him a TOOL and a Mid-West version Lieberman. A favorite Rove tactic, if you can't find a suitable Republican, find a Democrat who can be turned.

Not only that, Wellstone was k**led to make room for Norm. Everyone knows it here in Minnesota. Coleman didn't "win" that election. Mondale was in the lead and the Wellstone Memorial being attacked as a "partisan rally" was over-the-top and offensive to Democrats. If anything, it made people more inclined to vote for Mondale, not less.

"Coleman said he wanted to be a part of changing the divisive tone in Washington and accomplishing common goals."

Please. Norm is slimey and opportunistic, and the whole tenor of his campaign has been negative. I hope that Al wins, but having phone banked this weekend, I'd say it's going to be a nail biter. The media is NOT COVERING the money-funneling story just as they did not cover the $600/month apartment story. For whatever reason (StarTribune's parent company is heavy into coal), the press is not doing anything to look into the very real corruption allegations that Coleman faces.

I love that line. So for 6 years with his party on top, Coleman has no problem with divisive partisan politics. But now that his party is about to get a thorough drubbing, he thinks it's time for everyone to get along.
