ST. PAUL, Minn. — Months of tension between Republican Sen. Norm Coleman and his Democratic rival, Al Franken, spilled into their last debate Sunday night as they traded heated accusations about allegations made in a lawsuit against the incumbent.

It started immediately, as Coleman denied taking money or gifts from supporters without disclosing it. That charge stems from sworn statements in a lawsuit filed last week in Texas, claiming Coleman's friend and donor Nasser Kazeminy funneled $75,000 to a business that employs Coleman's wife in order to enrich the senator.

"The answer is no," Coleman said when asked whether the allegations were true. He then swung back to his claim that Franken is responsible for a TV ad about the allegations, which shows a clip of reporters asking Coleman about the alleged payments to his wife's employer and which the senator said defames her. Franken's campaign isn't running the ad, which is paid for by Democrats in Washington.

"You have an ad that's defaming my wife," Coleman said. "I think there's a line in this business. You can take any shot you want at the candidate. Mr. Franken, rather than rejecting it, is promoting it."

Franken replied that Coleman must answer questions about the allegations _ and rejected the idea that discussion of it is an attack on Laurie Coleman.

"This is not about Norm Coleman's wife," Franken said. "This is about Sen. Coleman's political sugar daddy."

But that didn't end the recriminations between Coleman and Franken. For the first time after five debates, Coleman personally criticized Franken on an issue other Republicans hammered for months _ that statements and writings in his previous careers as a comedian and writer betrayed an angry sensibility unsuited to the U.S. Senate.

"I think folks have a right to look at the character, to look at the record," Coleman said. "Jokes about rape, is that a line? Writing pornography for Playboy, is that a line? Calling a Supreme Court justice sexist, is that a line?"

The sniping between Coleman and Franken left a wide opening for the Independence Party's Dean Barkley, who presented his third-place candidacy as an alternative for voters tired of what he called "the most negative campaign in Minnesota's history."

"I ask people, do you think either Al or Norm will change the way Washington works?" Barkley said. "That's a question you have to ask yourself."

Once the candidates got down to issues, they staked out what has become familiar turf in the past few weeks of the campaign. Asked their top priority if they were elected, each candidate had a different answer.

Franken said his main goal would be "getting the economy back on track." Coleman said he wanted to be a part of changing the divisive tone in Washington and accomplishing common goals.

Barkley, who managed Jesse Ventura's shockingly successful campaign for governor in 1998, warned that the country needed to rein in spending. He noted that in all of his past runs for elected office, dating to 1992, he has warned of the dangers of a spiraling deficit.

I sent Al a little money. I hope it helped.. Were I the least bit religious ( which I'm not! ) I'd get down on my kness and pray that Al helps Barack drive a stack through the heart of the Greedy Old Party... And may it forever rot in hell....

I agree, the GOP has a philosophy that is so out of touch with the vast majority of the American people who want change not only in personnel but philosophy in order to change the direction this country is headed. Al Franken would be part of that change we are looking for.

Coleman funneling contributions through is wife is like Al Quaeda putting a training camp next to a school and then condemning the US for bombing schools. He put his wife out there as a shield and then cries foul when the contribution is revealed to the public. Quel merde.

Al's motto,

"I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog-gone it, people like me."

Stuart Smily goes to Washington, Can't be any worse than what Norm the Water Boy gave Minnesota for the past 6 years.

Every time I read about Coleman, it reminds me of a kid saying "I'm gonna tell my Mommy on you". That's how he uses and abuses the Court system. To blame Franken for inclusion of his wife -- No -- He did that himself. After he loses, she would be smart to divorce him.

Please Minnesota -- Vote for Franken. To vote for Barkley is wasting your vote as the power of one has no strength until they form a solid competitive 3rd party for national coverage.

This is the fourth lawsuit that Coleman has filed against an opponent for political gain.

except...perhaps voting Barkley takes away a vote from coleman more often than it does from Franken ???

This race is closer than it should be...coleman's a little crybaby who thinks he deserves special treatment.....the guy's just another crooked repoob....

Am hoping STRONG turnout of Dems sends lil' baby normie home.....forever.....

The difference is, Norm is the kid who punches you in the face and then tells his mommy you hit him. If you look at all his lawsuits, and his current attack of Al, he projects his negative traits onto his opponents.

Barkley is fine. He would be with the dems in most situations. But yeah, Franken would be better for an Obama presidency.

Norm said he wants to be a part of changing the divisive tone in Washington?? What hutzpah! Norm Coleman WAS PART of the divisive tone in Washington!

Knock him silly, Al! Restore the dignity and progressive ideals Paul Wellstone had fought so tirelessly and so hard to bring to the Senate and our politics.

We were at the debate last night. The very first question went to Norm Coleman asking him about the charges against him. I would think if those charges were false, Norm would have used that time to lay out all the facts - instead he just jumped on Al Franken. Minnesotans have the right to know if our Senator is taking $75,000 illegally. We have followed Al Franken's campaign from the start. Al & Franni have been a team. I wish every Minnesotan could have met them in person .... there is a great warmth and love that is present. Al Franken has a passion combined with intelligence we haven't seen since Senator Paul Wellstone. With great joy we will cast our votes for Franken!
