Election Results: McCain Campaign Manager On The Five Must-Win States

George Stephanopoulos writes this morning on McCain's must win states and his interview yesterday with McCain campaign manager Rick Davis. Go here to see a collection of pundits' predictions on the election.

Here are the six states to watch between 7pm and 8pm tomorrow night:



Virginia and Indiana after the last polls close at 7pm, Ohio and North Carolina after 7:30pm, and then Pennsylvania and Florida after 8pm.

These are the canaries in the coal mine.

McCain campaign manager Rick Davis conceded on "This Week" that John McCain has to win five out of six of these states to have a viable path to the presidency.

He could get there by holding all of the Bush states -- Indiana, Virginia, Ohio, Florida, and North Carolina -- and losing Pennsylvania, and then sacrificing Iowa and New Mexico.

But he will then need to secure Nevada and Colorado and all the rest of the Bush states later in the evening.

He could "act" like he was blowing a gasket during the Clinton years. But I have heard Clinton described as "the best Republican president ever." Don't know if I'd buy into that, but you get the drift.

Now that a Dem that might actually get into fundamental change is waiting in the wings, I guess we'll really get to see that explosion (I opt for ex-plode, not im-plode---but either way it will be fun to watch).

Sad thing is, he'll have a built in supply of griping/whining material for the next bunch of years. Deep inside, where his internal "wallet" lives, he's smiling.

McCain/Palin have spent more time beating up on Obama then spreading their platform. Now the clock is running out.

They don't have a platform. McCain didn't start talking about "change" until Obama started talking about Change with Hillary back in the primary's. He stole the movement of change from Obama. Their platform is:
Vote for a Veteran.

Nothing is new. Same tax policies of Bush, a half baked National Insurance Plan, and what else? Nothing! Wave the Pro-Life banner for a bit, and the tax break banner for a bit. Even though Obama's tax plan is better and so is the Insurance plan. What else do they have? Same rhetoric of Bush/Cheney of putting fear into people.

They offer nothing new is why they go after Obama.

It is no surprise that the John McCain - Sarah Palin ticket has gone increasingly negative down the home stretch. They really don’t have any other options to close the gap. However, a new negative advertisement has been leaked that is particularly disturbing in its hypocrisy.

Sarah Palin has consistently advocated abstinence-only education in schools, despite the fact that this philosophy has resulted with both Palin and her daughter conceiving out of wedlock. Clearly, abstinence-only has not worked for the Palin family, yet Sarah Palin wants to prescribe this in place of comprehensive sexual education for other young Americans.

One suggestion to prepare for voting:

Bring a folding chair, a good book and a bunch of snacks, and try to enjoy the wait.

Go with friends, have a party! Send out for pizza. The long lines don't have to discourage voters, we just need to go prepared to wait.

Update from the Obama phone bank:

I just spoke to a woman whose husband had cast an absentee ballot for Obama. He was 90 and terminal. He died yesterday, after he made sure he did what he could to make our future better.

His widow was so sweet and positive. Speaking with these people is an amazing experience.

You've got that right. I don't put anything past them. I don't believe any of these polls until the election is over and every precinct is closed! They're sending out fliers to people to vote on Nov. 5 instead of tomorrow. They're sending out erroneous information. I don't put anybody past working in the clerks' offices either. I'm making calls for Obama today, and I just spoke to an 83-y.o. woman in North Carolina who voted early for Barack. It was incredibly gratifying to speak with her.

I made phone calls last night and yesterday afternoon to people in NM until my voice was hoarse - it's easy and I'll be back on the phone this evening after work. Talked to some great folks who had already voted for Obama! And, some 70 and 80 year olds who were fired up for Obama and going to help others to vote! Most people are excited.

I was out on Saturday here in OR... and I tell you it is worth going out. I have multiple sclerosis and walk with a cane... I was exhausted when I got home but it was worth it. Here is why. I knocked on one door. The gentleman answers and say he is voting for Obama but wants to know where to go on Tuesday. He had moved here recently from another state. We vote by mail here I told him. We got on the phone and he got info about where to get a ballot. I went on to another house and as I was walking down the street he yells out to me. He has a giant stack of his mail. We sort thru it and found his ballot. I got him the address of the nearest drop off site and another voter got to vote. Every voter counts!!!!!
