Florida U. McCain Chairman Votes For Obama

"I wanted to see the next vice president of the United States," said Josh Simmons, Gators for McCain chairman.

Simmons said he voted for Obama about two weeks ago.

"I've seen a different John McCain than the one I signed up to work for," he said.

for crying out loud, that's just careless. when i opened up this story i thought for a minute they were talking about FSU, where biden appeared before coming here to gainesville to speak on the north lawn of the reitz union. huffpost editors are so careless.

that being said, i bet the Alligator staff is elated huffpost picked up this story - it's a great story with a great lead.

i'm an alum of both UF and the Alligator....so how can i resist saying "Go Gators and Go Obama/Biden!"

Yup, I posted this to an earlier reply too, and I too am an alumna and a native (sort of) Gainesvillian. I grew up there and it's a tremendous source of irritation when people mis-name the flagship university in the state - and one of the largest and best public institutions in the country - as Forida University. That's not even a place.

That being said - this story is priceless and I wish and hope for the Alligator's sake it is picked up even more.

Why not say 'University of Florida' rather than 'Florida U.'? There is not Florida University and the speech took place at the University of Florida. I've seen longer headlines on the site. This headline is just silly.

That said, as a UF alumnus, I'm glad to see that even some of the Republicans at UF have come to their sense.

Way to go Josh Simmons! I made the mistake of voting for Bush #42 when I was a freshman at UF in 1988. I am glad you took the time to inform yourself and that you saw the light! I haven't voted Republican for President since that first mistake! Obama is what we need to move our country forward!

How about those Gators!! First we chomp on the Dawgs on Saturday (I have to divulge, I possess a degree in Computer Science from UF, 1977) and then Joe comes and dons a Gator hat. And, to add insult to injury, the Gators for McCain Chairman admits he voted for OBAMA two weeks ago!! Incredible!! Hopefully BO/JB will put the same kind of hurt on McCain that we put on the Dawgs!

Amen to that! I'm also a proud UF grad (class of 1972), and I'm glad to see that it's not too late to teach an old dog (Dawg??) new tricks. Mr. Simmons, you are joining citizens such as Colin Powell, Christopher Buckley, and Susan Eisenhower, who are all Republicans who put their country first!

Even though Toots was ill, it's always a shock when someone passes, and I just feel so bad for him. It's like the universe is pulling the rug out from under him, so we have to lift him up and buoy his spirits with our positive vibes!

Go Obama. You're almost there! RIP Toots. Look down on our new president and help us protect him. Vote all you Californians! To quote my congressional candidate, Nick Liebham: "We need to give Obama a congress he can work with!"
