I Like ItI Don’t Like It

In what was clearly a very difficult portion of his address Monday night in North Carolina, Barack Obama spoke for several minutes on this grandmother's death from cancer Sunday night. At one point, it seemed, he was moved to tears.

Calling it a "bittersweet time" in his life, there were moments when one could detect the sadness in his voice and face. The crowd in Charlotte did its best to pull him along, screaming out words of support as he detailed Madelyn Dunham's life and drew from it threads that weaved into his candidacy and message. It was a poignant moment: the woman who helped raise him passing away just hours before the election.

No matter what happens tomorrow, I'm going to feel good about how it has turned out because all of you have created this remarkable campaign. She is gone home. And she died peacefully in her sleep, with my sister at her side. And so, there is great joy as well as tears. I'm not going to talk about it too long because it is hard, a little, to talk about.

I want everybody to know though a little bit about her. Her name was Madelyn Dunham. And she was born in Kansas in a small town in 1922. Which means she lived through the Great Depression, she lived through two world wars, she watched her husband go off to war, while she looked after her baby and worked on a bomber assembly line. When her husband came back they benefited from the GI bill, they moved west and eventually ended up in Hawaii.

She was somebody who was a very humble person, a very plainspoken person. She is one of those quiet heroes we have all across America, who are not famous, their names are not in the newspapers, but each and every day they work hard. They look after their families. They sacrifice for their children, and their grandchildren. They aren't seeking the limelight. All they try to do is do the right thing. And in this crowd, there are a lot of quiet heroes like that, people like that, mothers and fathers and grandparents who have worked hard and sacrificed all their lives and the satisfaction that they get is in seeing their children or maybe their grandchildren or their great-grandchildren live a better life than they did. That is what America is about. That is what we are fighting for.

Today, Cancer has lost its grip on a wonderful and patient lady.
She is set free after she set us free, with her single vote, from the grips of cancer in the White House.
She will suffer no more, and neither do we.

The nation is mourning the loss of this remarkable woman. Madelyn Dunham, quite literally, gave birth to hope for this nation. She is the mother of Barack's mother, Anne who instilled in him the fine qualities, presidential qualities, we see every single day.

Thank you, Toot and Anne for this wonderful man, a real beacon of hope for our country and the world.

Rest in peace.

Obama/Biden!!!

You know in my tradition it is said that Almighty God tells Mankind:

" My faithful servant's reward from Me, if I have taken to Me his best friend from all the inhabitants of the world, and he has borne it patienty for My sake shall be nothing less than Paradise." (As related by Al Bukhari)

Truly may the Almighty forgive her sins, have mercy upon her and grant her Paradise. May He also grant this beautiful family patience & strength as they carry on her legacy.

I am sure that Obama's grandmother and mother are in heaven together and are both voting for him today. The voting is quick and easy there because there are fewer Republicans to deal with.

Wont it be great when our next POTUS (OBAMA) goes on International trips, unlike the doufus weve had the past 8 years, will be greeted by millions of people with admiration and hospitality? Wouldn't it be great to finally get respect from our fellow human beings through peace and understanding instead of bullying and threats like Bush/Cheney?
I look forward to having MY country regain its rightful place as the leader of the civilized world, I emphasize Civilized!

I was genuinely moved by what happened to Obama on the eve of the election. I'm sure that Toot meant a lot to him and it must have hurt very badly to have this happen the day before the election. The tear running down his face in the picture is so heartbreaking. I'm so glad that he had the chance to visit her before she died. Obama will be victorious tonight and I'm sure that Toot will be looking down on him with love, pride and jubilation! I smiled when I read that she cast her ballot early.

OBAMA08!

How proud is all I can think...she must have been at such peace and filled with love for her exceptional grandson....

My condolences to President (ok a bit premature, but true!) Obama and his family on their great loss. I know your grandmother will be watching you with pride today!

I was so moved at the polls that I took pictures! It felt a little silly to do so at first but I am SO-SO-SO glad that I did! I even took a picture of my Barack Obama / Joe Biden ballot choice!!!

Yes..I was totally geeked about finally casting my vote for the Best Presidential Candidate for America!

I swell with pride for Toot!!!
...she now has an Angel's-eye view of this incredible moment!

Seems this new consultant gig I'm working -- I'm surrounded by Repugs, and it's the most subdued place at the moment. One co-worker stated the other day, he's voting for Ron Paul. also they fear for me that somehow Obama is going to get s.h.o.t.! I told them stop it, they are stressing me out!

All the Obama fans are exited though, we are sneaking around talking about it, I can't focus!!

Anyway, rally tonight in Chicago! Tickets printed! Fired up, ready to go!

Though I am loathed to admit this, I too have associates that continually bring up Obama's alleged increased likelihood for assassination as a reason not to vote for him. Even worse, the claim is that if he is assassinated, there will be ensuing race wars! All sounds a bit crazy to me, and to not be the America in which (I think) I live. Nonetheless, disturbing......and dumb. Sigh. Go Obama!

Don't Worry Barrack, she will be standing with you, walking beside you and holding your head and hand as you move forward to try and put our Country back together for all Americans' not just Blue America, or Red America or like Palin loves to say, "real Americans"., but all Americans. May God bless her and you and give you strength through the coming months and years.

I'm the most unsentimental person I know. It's rare that I'm moved to tears... but I was, watching his speech last night when he spoke of his grandmother's death. His sadness was genuine and his words rang with authenticity. And I think it is this humanity he displays, all the time, in every situation, that has earned him so much admiration and respect. I may not agree with him on every issue, but he's earned my absolute confidence in his capacity to lead the country.

I read a wonderful article about Grandmother Obama on http://politicalnewsconnection.com/ called "Grandmother 'Toot" taught Obama strong values". I highly recommend it. She obviously had a profound influence on Barak. Her passing the day before he's elected President is unbelievably poignant.
