I Like ItI Don’t Like It

In what was clearly a very difficult portion of his address Monday night in North Carolina, Barack Obama spoke for several minutes on this grandmother's death from cancer Sunday night. At one point, it seemed, he was moved to tears.

2008-11-04-capt.c4d8b33889a049d0a8eeb214f18deb0e.obama_2008_ncjh105.jpg

Calling it a "bittersweet time" in his life, there were moments when one could detect the sadness in his voice and face. The crowd in Charlotte did its best to pull him along, screaming out words of support as he detailed Madelyn Dunham's life and drew from it threads that weaved into his candidacy and message. It was a poignant moment: the woman who helped raise him passing away just hours before the election.

No matter what happens tomorrow, I'm going to feel good about how it has turned out because all of you have created this remarkable campaign. She is gone home. And she died peacefully in her sleep, with my sister at her side. And so, there is great joy as well as tears. I'm not going to talk about it too long because it is hard, a little, to talk about.

I want everybody to know though a little bit about her. Her name was Madelyn Dunham. And she was born in Kansas in a small town in 1922. Which means she lived through the Great Depression, she lived through two world wars, she watched her husband go off to war, while she looked after her baby and worked on a bomber assembly line. When her husband came back they benefited from the GI bill, they moved west and eventually ended up in Hawaii.

She was somebody who was a very humble person, a very plainspoken person. She is one of those quiet heroes we have all across America, who are not famous, their names are not in the newspapers, but each and every day they work hard. They look after their families. They sacrifice for their children, and their grandchildren. They aren't seeking the limelight. All they try to do is do the right thing. And in this crowd, there are a lot of quiet heroes like that, people like that, mothers and fathers and grandparents who have worked hard and sacrificed all their lives and the satisfaction that they get is in seeing their children or maybe their grandchildren or their great-grandchildren live a better life than they did. That is what America is about. That is what we are fighting for.

The true courage of leadership is not standing alone at a podium, but being brave enough to know you do not.

In these days of phony Joe the Plumbers, Obama had the fortune to be raised by a true "Rosie the Riveter". Prayers and sympathy to Senator Obama and his family.

I devoutly hope Obama will win today, but is it too much to ask of a president that he knows how many world wars occurred after 1922? sigh.

He meant the Second World War. This was a man in grief. Have you no shame to criticize him at this time?? Who in heaven's name raised you?

He might have meant the Korean war or even the Vietnam war both of which felt like world wars to those who lived through them.

Fair warning to anyone about to read this: It will be cheesy.

I just voted about an hour ago here in Louisville, Ky. I wanted to avoid long lines (and I was excited) so I left at the literal "crack of dawn" to go to my polling place. When I left my house the sun was just beginning to rise and I stood and looked at the sunrise for what I realized was the first time in a long while. For some reason the thought of Barack's grandmother came into my head. Yesterdday when I heard this news I thought it was really too bad that she didn't get to see her grandson elected president; but thinking about it this morning I realized that she saw all she needed to see. She saw that the young boy she cared for turn into a great man and one of the worlds truly exceptional people, what more could a grandmother possibly ask for in life. I am by no means a religious person, but I did say a little thing in my head for Mrs. Dunham; and then I went and voted for her grandson. I have never been so proud to support a candidate in my lifetime.

Okay, now it's time for me to go back to being a nervous wreck until the numbers come in.

Nothing cheesy about that at all. I bet a lot of folks are feeling the way you felt at that moment. I voted this morning as well, and the excitement of the crowd was so high. Even at 6 in the morning.

I was touched by your comments......

They were not "cheesy" at all. You experienced a sacred moment this morning, and the "little thing" you said in your head was a prayer of your own soul. And, that was sacred as well. Thank you for sharing. I feel honored.

Sometimes a little cheese is appropriate, especially when it's heartfelt.

I am a 40 yr old man that has never voted. I am college educated and served 13 yrs in our military. I am a proud man, never been one to ride the coat tails of others. I have been watching and reading every step of this campaign. I have never been so moved and inspired by any man in my life. But its more that just the man. Its the outpouring of love and respect from people of all walks of life.

I was really inspired by the story of the 55 yr old white man who was a staunch republican , but went out to canvass with his wife. They were sent into housing projects, when they knocked on doors and told the residents they were there for Barack , they were embraced and found excitement at each resident they went to. This man is now an Obamacon.

This is what makes me really happy. The celebration of unity that I feel when I see people who come out of the comfort zones to beat the pavement for hope an change. I am inspired by you, all the people who have made heart felt comments about the what is right for our country. I love for my fellow country man and I willing to do my part. I have never been moved by any campaign or election , but this one is special. You all our special. When he cried we all cried. Please go out and vote.

Wonderful post. My 13 year old daughter went to a homeless shelter to register voters. She said many were surprised that a young girl would care enough to participate in an acitivity like that, but they were really nice to her. Today she is out helping get people to the polls with one of her teachers.

I agree Moosekilla, if McClain brought as much unity as Barack Obama, I would vote for him. Obama has brought all of us together and he will be a President for all of the people. This is what I want in a President. I have watched John McCain's rallies and I see only white people. McCain has never reached out to all of us, not just one race of people.

Obama's a special guy.

Best wishes to he and his family.

Obama was always talking about the Great Depression - during the campaign - and those were stories he got from his grandparents. And now with the economic collapse - everyone else is saying we haven't seen this since the Great Depression.

It is just another thing that says that Obama is the right man for our times.

My deepest simpathy goes out to Barack, his sister Maya and both of their families.
I can see through both of these people whom "TooT" helped to raise, she was an amazing individual.
Working her way to the top in banking, when women didn't have much of an opporturnity. She provided for her family.

May Angels lead you In ...

There are lines in a song that I think are appropiate. Here is a youtube

There's no one in town I know
You gave us some place to go.
I never said thank you for that.
I thought I might get one more chance.
What would you think of me now,
so lucky, so strong, so proud?
I never said thank you for that,
now I'll never have a chance.
May angels lead you in.
Hear you me my friends.
On sleepless roads the sleepless go.
May angels lead you in.
So what would you think of me now,
so lucky, so strong, so proud?
I never said thank you for that,
now I'll never have a chance.

Godspeed, Mrs. Dunham. Too bad she didn't live to see Obama elected as the 44th President of the United States. I sure hope he'll take it in a landslide.

So much for the praise. But saying she was born in 1922 and that "she lived through two world wars" isn't a very presidential slip. Now, unless I missed World War III, I'd say he'd better fact check his history books, because as far as I know WWI ended in 1918. Regular people don't mind when other regular people get these facts wrong, but they do take note when it comes from a presidential candidate.

I hesitate to reply because your criticism really deserves no response.
You may not think the slip was presidential, but it certainly was HUMAN. You must take pleasure in never having mispoken, especially during difficult times.
Regular people do mind when someone finds it necessary to kick another while they're down.

Oh, cut us some slack here!

She watched the First World War on TV - with Joe Biden's Mom and Pop!!

Evidently, about 100 million Americans still don't understand the difference between a mistake by someone who actually knows about something, and something that is said wrong because the person operating the mouth is totally clueless and bullshitting - aka pulling a Palin!
