Last week bloggers Kathlyn and Gay Hendricks wrote about how the Obamas, who celebrate their 16th anniversary on October 3rd, set a new standard for marriage in America.

For Americans, one of the most important aspects of an Obama presidency is being overlooked: the model of a healthy relationship....For example, Michelle and Barack do something we've never seen before in a presidential couple: they actually look directly at each other when they're speaking to each other. They also laugh at each other's humor, and they allow their sexual attraction for each other to be visible. Contrast that with other presidential marriages, in which the sexual attraction to each other was not visible but their sexual attraction to others became highly visible. Michelle and Barack talk openly about their feelings for each other. They're real.

Speaking to a rally on Thursday, Barack revealed his plans for their anniversary celebration: "I've got this whole romantic dinner planned," Obama told a rally in Grand Rapids. "I think it should go pretty well. That's my hope any ways. I've got a gift all picked out."

Asked for his advice on how to maintain a successful marriage Obama suggested "a sense of humor, listening and 'never get so mad that you forget why you love them.'"

The Obamas clearly aren't afraid to get a little cozy in front of the cameras. See evidence of this below:

I envy this guy Obama, not just because he has somebody like Michele, I'm sure she's a great person, but more than that, I admire and envy the way Obama feel for her. I'll give up the world to experience that feeling again...

I like the Obamas. I like their kids refreshing and oft-startling comments - as in Malia wanting to make sure Dad wasn't going to "mess with her TV". But I also wonder why Americans were so against Mrs. Dean's decision to continue taking care of her patients - of upholding the Hippocratic Oath - while Gov. Dean was campaigning. Why did we assume she wasn't a good proper political wife? Why didn't we celebrate the fact that she is 1) a doctor who put her patients first, and 2) her husband understood and supported that decision? Why did we try to shame her into the mold of the Political Wife at a time when we ache for doctors with compassion and expertise?

As a father, one of my favorite things Barack has talked about on the campaign trail is the responsibility fathers have in raising their children and taking care of their families.

Someone mentioned pictures of the Palin and her husband being affectionate. Haven't seen that yet, but I'll have to look. Maybe it will give me the first "warm & fuzzy" feeling I've had from the Republicans all cycle.

I have a lot of criticisms towards Palin, but her dedication to family is not one of them. It is one thing I applaud her for.

Their admiration and respect for one another says a lot. She's a very smart and strong woman, and he chose her! He's got a tremendous mess to clean up in this country and the American public will surely step up to the plate, we'll do our part to help rebuild this country. He'll be the leader we need at this time to bring us together. Look how excited we are, we're realistic, but we are anticipating great things. Yipeeee.

What is striking is that the love and love and tenderness they share is genuine.

You people kill me!!! Just admit that all you care about is the Democrats and the warm fuzzy feeling voting for this black couple gives you. Why is it so precious and wonderful to see the Obamas hugging and kissing and so disgusting to see the Palins hugging and kissing? This may be very hard for many of you to grasp, but the Palins are a very attractive couple (I am not saying the Obamas are not) As for Palins husband being involved do any of you former Hillary supporters really think that Bill was not going to be involved? Just be happy there are still some long time happily married couples out there that still care about each other like the Obamas, Palins, McCains, and Bidens it does not matter if they are Repubs or Dems.

All I care about are Democrats and the warm fuzzy feeling voting for this couple gives me. I used to be bipartisan but that's before the Repubicans party got hijacked by vicious, ignorant thugs.

I have to agree with Ms. CB. Frankly, I liked the two lady Bushes, too. The one thing I did notice was that Cindy was a lot more reserved than either Michelle or Jill, but that's more to do with her upbringing than anything else. Was Jill born into a richer family? Yes. Do we blame her for it? Well, I don't. but it seems like some people do. Sarah, I don't know as much about. At least Cindy's true to herself, seems Sarah is less true to herself, but that's just me.

It's not their color, it's their chemstry and the obvious strength in their relationship. A strong man undaunted by an equally strong woman. That says more to me about his true character than many other things. And, truthfully, I though the Palin pictures were cute too.

I love seeing this. It makes me feel so warm inside to see it displayed and that it's natural and not fake. They don't have to work hard at it they just do it and that's what people love to see. You can tell he loves her by the way he talks about her, the way he looks at her, the way he treats her which is with the utmost respect. You will never hear him say his wife can be in a beauty contest for some bikers.

He loves his children, he adores then and they adore him. It's natural for them as well to just show their love no matter where they are. That's the example we need.

happy anniversary to the obamas....it's been along time since we've seen such a beautiful marriage inthe white house, a president who truly loves his wife and family...imagine that....I don't think barack would cheat on and leave michele even if she had a horrendous automobile accident

The values barack holds high in his family will resonate in the US when he is President

They are a amazing couple. Soul mates...you can see it in their eyes when they look at eachother.
To actually have a President who has a loving, respectful, equal, healthy relationship with his wife is a true inspiration for us all.
