Lieberman: 'I Fear' That 'America Will Not Survive' If Dems Get 60 Senate Seats

With the possibility that Democrats might soon gain a filibuster proof majority in the Senate, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has been openly flirting with thoughts of voting with his conservative colleagues. Last week, ThinkProgress noted that prominent conservatives like Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) said he would welcome Lieberman "with open arms."

Today, in an interview with right-wing radio host Glenn Beck, Lieberman made clear that he firmly opposes Democrats gaining 60 seats in the Senate, saying that the survival of the country is in doubt if Democrats break the filibuster threshold:

BECK: But do you agree that Senator Hatch said to me that if we don't at least have the firewall of the filibuster in the Senate that in many ways America will not survive?

LIEBERMAN: Well, I hope it's not like that, but I fear.

There would certainly be dim chances of national survival if there were 60 Lieberman clones in the Senate. Fortunately more citizens looked to the the future instead of the past and chose hope over fear.

Let him go and start working with folks like Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins. Better to build REAL bi-partisanship than to kowtow to the likes of Lieberman. He made his bed, not let him enjoy the fruits of his labor with his new buddies the Republicans. They'll welcome him with open arms when it comes time to vote, but Joe shouldn't expect to get many invites to their country clubs now that they really have no need for him with the cameras turned off. The real fun will be when he runs again for office. How much will the Republicans like him then? He'll have to run as an unpopular Republican, which they won't like, or perhaps he can run again as an independent ... although, as the saying goes, fool me once ...

strip him committee chair , and if he didn't publicaly apologizes for what he said and did , he must be thrown out of the caucus.he belongs with in the landfill where his trash talk against what used to be his party are.

joe the jerks real fear is that his sorry butt is out the door as far as the dems are concerned. He should be sent packing and not allowed to caucus, to campaign against your own party candidate is un forgiveable. Yes, I know he claims to be an independent but he still does caucus with the dems.

I believe that Lieberman "the quisling" should be denied his chairmanship and expelled from the caucus.

Lieberman is not very bright, he should have been praying the Democrats got to 60 seats. 55 votes is the same as 54 votes and 58 votes is the same as 59 for the purposes of running the Senate. There is a big difference between 50 votes and 49 as well as 59 votes and 60. The Democratic leadership now has no good reason to allow Lieberman to caucus with them or to throw him any bones to keep him happy. Good-bye and Good-riddence Joe Lieberman.

I completely agree with you. It's time for Lieberman to officially be cut loose from the democratic party.
