Americans turned out at the polls in record numbers today.

According to MSNBC:

Americans were voting in numbers unprecedented since women were given the franchise in 1920. Secretaries of state predicted turnouts approaching 90 percent in Virginia and Colorado and 80 percent or more in big states like Ohio, California, Texas, Missouri and Maryland.

Though the exact numbers won't be determined until all the votes are counted in the next few days and weeks, a history-making high percentage of Americans voted, according to CNN and the Wall Street Journal:

More than 30 million voters had already cast ballots before Tuesday in early voting. Nearly 100 million more were expected on election day. Hundreds of thousands of voters waited from long before daybreak or for hours on end to make their choices known.

Michael McDonald, a politics professor at Virginia's George Mason University, predicted nearly 65% of the electorate would have voted by the time all polls closed -- matching or eclipsing the turnout in the presidential election of 1960 featuring candidates John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. Not since 1908, when the U.S. was convulsing through a shift from the machine party politics of the 19th century to the free-for-all of modern campaigns, has so large a proportion of Americans participated in a presidential election.

The divisiveness of the race must not hinder the mission of making America once again the greatest nation on earth. So, to my Republican brothers and sisters I say, please join us in ushering in a new age for American, for us all. We cannot fall into the old patterns of partisan squabbles else we risk fostering the sort of counterproductive infighting that scarred the Bush years.

We are Americans first, political affiliations last. We must never forget that.

Now to reform the faulty electoral system that gives us such an unequal voting experience depending on where we live. EVERYONE should be offered a choice of paper ballots, to know that their vote will count, despite Diebold.

I am proud of EVERY American who voted today, no matter who they voted for. We all showed that the American system of government, while far from perfect, works. I am heartened that so many of us realized that our individual votes count! Kudos to all of us!

Start your letters now to your state legislators to have mail-in ballots.

and mandatory early voting for at least two wks, and a HOLIDAY on election day. And hold election officials responsible for making sure there are enough machines and paper ballots. Like they can go to jail if people are disenfranchised.

that might make the difference.

My brother "learned" from Limbaugh that there are about 5 million illegal aliens who are registered to vote in the US because no one makes you prove citizenship when you register. Seeing's how Obama's popular vote was only about 4 million more than McCain's, you can imagine that Rush will claim Obama won only by illegals voting. (Never mind that a huge proportion of them live in Arizona and Texas, which McCain won, and California, which would have gone to Obama anyway.)

I worked a NC precinct today in the pouring rain. CAR LOADS of first-time voters, young black men and women, came to vote for Senator Obama. Some older people voted early this morning and returned with their friends and neighbors, all in the pouring rain.

YES, WE CAN!!
