The Iowa GOP appears to be distancing itself from a Monday effort to challenge thousands of student ballots at Grinnell College.

Spokesman Nathan Treloar told the Huffington Post on Tuesday that while he has "seen reports coming out that its Republican lawyers" objecting to student ballots, he claimed "this could be a local thing" at the county level.

Asked whether the state party has encouraged or endorsed the strategy, in which students who did not register to vote by affixing a PO box to their official university mailing address are being challenged, Treloar said "No, not that I have been made aware of." Treloar then suggested contacting the Republican chair in Poweshiek county, where Grinnell is located.

But if the Iowa Republican Party is not eager to be associated with the challenging the ballots of young voters, they have yet to communicate their displeasure to those who are responsible for the tactic.

Reached by phone, Poweshiek Republican county chair Harry Meek not only claimed responsibility for the strategy, but said he had no idea whether the state party backed his move. "Yeah, it was us," he admitted, sounding somewhat resigned. Asked if he knew how the state party viewed their legal challenge of young voters, Meek said, "I couldn't tell ya."

"We were told that Secretary of State in Iowa had made some concessions for students -- as long as they put down the [university] post office address along with a PO box, that was adequate. So the ones we challenged were those that didn't have a PO box. It's real simple, we're just going by the rules. It says so right on the challenge affidavit."

Alec Schierenbeck, Vice President of the College Democrats of America and a student at Grinnell College, sees it differently. "That is a technicality that they're using to try and disenfranchise students," he said, noting that while only 50 votes have been challenged out of 700 early ballots on campus, the result is mass confusion on campus today. "At the last minute, we've had to rearrange the way we are getting out the vote on campus. I fear some voters were disuaded by the idea they're going to go to polls today, and a lawyer is going to harrangue them and shake a book at them. It spreads a lot of disinformation."

Schierenbeck says that all students who cast challenged ballots have been contacted, and are signing statements in advance of a Thursday hearing on the issue. "Given the [last-minute] context of challenge, and the history of way we've registered, we're optimistic these votes are going to be upheld," he said.

"The is a last-minute tactic by a party that's adrift, and has little left to do but disenfranchise people," Schierenbeck added. "That's why the state party has cut them adrift. They don't want to take responsibility for it, either."

So where are the lawyers and the police?

Is this just a pleasant conversation or a willful attempt to prevent students from voting to gain a political advantage?

Lawyers have been involved. They were quick to respond.

As for the prevention of student voters, it was a deliberate attempt. Although Grinnell students will not impact the presidential election, they could tilt the balance in the congressional election. This is the third election between Eric Palmer and Danny Caroll. Palmer is the current incumbent, having defeated Carroll in 2006 by 327 votes. (Caroll beat Palmer for an open seat in 2004.) The challenges were brought by the co-chairs of the Poweshiek County Republican Party to more than 700 ballots cast by Grinnell students (though only 50 were allowed to stand). Those 700 votes could very well have tilted the balance in the House race.

Someone is sending text messages to University of Florida students telling them that voting is being extended to Wednesday. I work at the University and received an email from the VP of student affairs about this.

As a Grinnell alum, I was furious about this report when I heard it last night. I immediately called m cousin, a Grinnell freshman, who I knew had voted early three weeks ago. At the time, she was so thrilled about having cast her first vote ever -- and having it be for Obama. Thankfully, her vote was not one of the 50 that had been challenged, even though she -- like all Grinnell students who live in dorms -- had registered her address at the campus post office.

The best thing to see is how organized the students were in their response. The Campus Democrats sent out emails to all the Democrats on campus and kept them informed through the night. Today, they are arranging to have people provide necessary statements for any student who might be challenged.

As for the challenges, Congress needs to step in and pass laws to prevent frivolous challenges to legitimate voters. Every party should also condemn these efforts. The systematic attempt to disenfranchise legitimate voters because of their party affiliation should be repudiated.

I think I'll end this with a quote from my 18-year old cousin, who was forced to endure a day of uncertainty about whether her first-ever vote would count: "It's just sickening to think that anyone would contest a vote just because they could. May every state turn that beautiful shade of blue tomorrow."

Does this story really surprise anyone? The GOP knows they have as much chance to win as the Browns winning the Superbowl. That's when they rely on deceit, which is what their entire party is made up of.

There are four Christian/Bible colleges in Iowa. I wonder if the GOP challenged registrations at any of those schools, or even at the University of Iowa, for that matter. Could they have specifically chosen Grinnell because it is a small Liberal Arts college?

It would be one thing if they uniformly contested all student registrations which did not conform, but it is the targeting of specific types of voters that makes it disenfranchisement. Just like in the South, they didn't test everyone's ability to read.

I am a Grinnell College graduate (1980) now living in the Philadelphia area. I loved the school, the town, Poweshiek County and my 4 years there and I hope that by the end of voting today, students there will have resisted intimidation and freely cast their ballots. I would not be surprised though to hear that no other small Iowa college was targeted like this ... Grinnell is one of the best liberal arts schools in the country period ... and while it also has a more liberal mind-set than other comparably sized schools in the Midwest, it would be yet another sad, pathetic example of how the GOP seeks to limit democracy.

These dirty tricks are disgusting. How can Americans stand for this sort of behaviour yet again?

Have the Republicans employed Robert Mugabe as an advisor or something?

I'm just amazed that anyone would vote for a party that regularly and systematically attempts to deny the voting rights of American citizens. When I have mentioned this to Republican friends of mine they actually deny that the GOP is doing this and then bring up ACORN. I'm aghast at the dishonesty and disingenuousness of most Republicans.

kathy001 : Why are you " amazed "
and " aghast" when we all know that Republicans will never admit any errors they have made. Bush was a perfect example of this ignorance and lack of any responsibility.

You know, I've just never noticed it being this bad before. I think this election has really brought out the worst in the Republicans.

The students should all go in with their cameras (phones) aimed at the haranguing lawyers (or other GOP representatives). Universal photography is a voting rights protection tool.

I don't think the GOP reps who have interfered in this election have really thought about what would happen if their tactics managed somehow to steal this election. This is not 2000. This is not 2004. Hundreds of thousands--millions--of people in this nation have participated in this election to an extent unseen in our lifetime. Do you think all of those people would just sit down and shut up and watch the GOP violate this process, this year?

I think there should be a law that the vote wait time is 1 hour max, as much as pacticible.
