I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Juan Williams

A visibly moved Juan Williams reacted to the news that Barack Obama was elected President of the United States shortly after the race was called on Fox News Tuesday. Williams called it "stunning," noting that African Americans were barely able to vote until just 43 years ago, and saying, "I don't care how you feel about him politically, on some level you have to say this is America at its grandest."

His full comments:

It's a stunning sight. It's incomprehensible. Even a year ago, I wouldn't have thought this was possible. That an African American man could be elected President of the United States. When I think of it from a historical point of view, and you go back and think of people, that fact that black people didn't have the right to vote in this country. There were only black men until 1870. In 1870, black men got the right to vote and of course it didn't mean much until going forward until 1965 and the Voting Rights Act. And at that point, Linden Johnson said the Democrat Party lost the South forever and there was no possibility really of full enfranchisement that said black people could somehow be the leader of the United States of America. This is truly an incredible moment of American history. I can't think of another country in the world where you could have a significant minority that was once so maligned and so oppressed finally have one of its sons rise to this level. This is ah... I don't care how you feel about him politically, on some level you have to say this is America at its grandest, the potential, the possibility, and what it says for our children. Black and white, the image of Barack Obama and those little girls in the Rose Garden in these years to come. I think it's just stunning.

The opportunity to show the other side just how big a cause is or can be, only comes along a few times in life.

Those of us who have posted here and came here to find some since of sanity and belonging have that opportunity now.

I'm afraid just like GW blew his “political credit” we are blowing our “humanity credit” by firing off angry rhetoric even as we stand victorious.

Lets' accept the good no matter where it originates and HOPE that by doing so more good will come.

I believe that we as Americans can show nations the way things can work. However shooting down the other sides’ good wishes only feeds the divide that exists today.

Come on people we are so much better than what we are showing.

All African Americans can relate to this whether they support Obama's policies or not so stop trying to categorize these emotions on display as fake. Even the worst of us have feelings and can become better people if we are not condemned when we open up.

Get it?

The people here on Huff are just better than what I'm reading and I know it.

Let's try to get past things while there is an opening. We may just get to where we want to be.

agree one hundred percent.
i cannot fathom that we are seeing anything other than graciousness right now. many of these posts and articles, here and on salon, do not speak well of us at all.

glad to know some are like-minded, and really do understand that we can take the high road now, and offer olive branches and hands, to work together for something good.

standing here and saying, "but you were lame during the campaign," doesn't do anything for dems, libs, obama, our kids, or anyone else.

lets get with the program people!

It is amazing to me how the same individuals who last night and this morning are praising Barack Obama and the way he ran his campaign were the same individuals who tried to pick his bones for the last two years. People are really something else! What hypocrites.

Do not condemn. The last come first. Welcome them.

The book that Juan Williams wrote is so out of touch.

Can somebody, please, put a video together of all the people tearing up, crying, and bawling the moment they realized that Obama won.? It would be amusing and touching at the same time.

What a hypocrite. I'll bet most FOX people have sold their souls to the devil just to be on TV. He's been on the republican side for months with the weakest possible defense of Democrats.

I agree. Juan is a hypocrite. He has never ever said anything positive about Obama while with his homies on FAUX NEWS. I do not like him at all.

On Fox News last night after OUR PRESIDENT was elected, there was this character that was spinning some stupid commentary that McCain in his heart of heart wanted Obama to win for the sake of history? That same line was repeated again, I believe this morning by that pretty blond face who thinks anyone actually believes her rhetoric! What a sham of a network!

I watched fox news until I realised that if I continue to watched fox channel, I am going to be messed up psychologically. So I stopped watching it. But I have to say, that this is the first time I have heard Juan Williams TALK SENSE, MAKE SENSE AND WAS TRUE TO HIMSELF.

what a shame for him to misjudged the real America values, it's people and the TIME.
what ever influenced your thought process Mr Juan Williams, PLEASE GET RID OF IT...IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT YOUR POLITICAL AFFILIATIONS IS( VERY EVIDENT YOU ARE A CONSERVATIVE), WHAT IS CRUCIAL IS YOUR POSITIVE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE DEVELOP OF ALL MAN KIND. THAT IS WHAT THE WORLD SEE IN OBAMA.

AND WE THANK GOD FOR FOR HIM.

So fox "news" is trying to redeem its horrible image by pretending to now have good views and respect for President elect Obama. Too little, too late.

I dont watch fox news because it is trashy but Im a white 57 year old female who campainged (volunteered) for Obama. I was not looking at race on my vote no, the qualified candidate. But thank god so many oppressed african americans can feel this relief that the dark days are going to be behind us and it is historical.. Made me cry too everyone was elated all colors of skin. We have an exceptional President and Vice President...Biden was very much like Obama in ideals and leadership and now we have a team to lead. With real families who work both spouses. Children and grand children who play together. That is real america...Colin was a secretary of state as he said not a black secretary of state. The muslim woman morning her fallen son that he brought attention to.
Now everyone has to address the new president accordingly. Mr. President

Fox news of course you will continue to report the trash tv.

Sweet to hear!!
