DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. — Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

"I'm not going to say I wasn't surprised," said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch's first voter.

With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

Being first means something to residents of the Granite State, home of the nation's earliest presidential primary and the central focus _ however briefly _ of the vote-watching nation's attention every four years.

Town Clerk Rick Erwin said Dixville Notch is proud of its tradition, but added, "The most important thing is that we exemplify a 100 percent vote."

Dixville Notch resident Peter Johnson said the early bird electoral exercise "is fun." A former naval aviator, Johnson said he was voting for McCain, but added, "I think both candidates are excellent people."

Voting was carried out in a room in a local hotel festooned with political memorabilia from campaigns long past. Each voter gets an individual booth so there are no lines at the magic hour. The votes were quickly counted, announced and recorded on a posterboard that proclaims, "First in the Nation, Dixville Notch."

The tradition drew spectators, including Tim McKenna, who drove with his wife 16 miles from Cambridge, N.H., to witness the event.

"Living in New Hampshire, you hear so much about it in the news," said McKenna. "I think it's a very historic election this year."

Ed Butler, a Democratic state representative who runs the Notchland Inn in Hart's Location, said, "Being this small and being able to be first just makes it that much more special."

Although scores of states have voted early, the two villages are the first to officially announce the results on Election Day.

New Hampshire law requires polls to open at 11 a.m., but that doesn't stop towns from opening earlier. It also allows towns to close their polls once all registered and eligible voters have cast ballots.

Hart's Location started opening its polls early in 1948, the year Harry S. Truman beat Thomas Dewey, to accommodate railroad workers who had to get to work early. Hart's Location got out of the early voting business in 1964 after some residents grew weary of all the publicity, but brought it back in 1996.

Dixville Notch, nestled in a mountain pass 1,800 feet up and about halfway between the White Mountain National Forest and the Canadian border, followed suit in 1960, when John F. Kennedy beat Richard M. Nixon. Nixon, the Republican, swept all nine votes cast in Dixville that year, and before Tuesday, the town had gone for a Democrat only once since then. That was in 1968, when the tally was Democrat Hubert Humphrey eight, Nixon four.

Let me start off by saying I voted Obama and truly believe he will win today. But having said that, could someone out there please tell me how should I behave if (God forbid) McCain should somehow be voted in as president. I know the power of positive thinking is important but seeing how the Repubs
always seem to steal away elections, I just need someone to tell me what if?

If McCain wins I will cry, sob loudly and the neighbors will think I've lost my mind. I don't know what to do either. I have volunteered for the campaign and been very vocal in my small Ohio town so I will probably hide in my house for as long as possible. Hopefully, none of this will come to fruition.

Keep the faith.

I can tell you what I would do...same as when Al Gore lost. Put my head down and be depressed. I don't think I have ever gotten over that one, and this would be just as difficult.

Can't really determine who most were for but many I know voted for O. I live in a very small town surrounded by KC and there are 15 O signs to 2 Mc's.

My head hurts........can't wait 'till this is over. Hope and pray all!!!!

Just voted in Colorado this morning with 5 Republican buddies from work (we carpool). 2 voted for Obama. 2 voted for McCain, and 1 wrote in Ron Paul's name. I voted for O.

If 3 of 5 Republicans voted against John McCain, you gotta like your chances. Good on you for voting early:)

If for every 5 republicans, we can get 2 Obama votes and they continue to choose Ron Paul, Bob Barr or anyone but McCain, there may well be HOPE in spite of their desperate efforts to steal the elections. What I worry most about is the untraceable fraud in the counting by optical scan and the electronic machines!!

These guys have been running that Rev. Wright crap all day and all night. When the s*&t hits the fan, the dirtbag contingent are totally unabashed.

Rev. Wright is minor compared to Bush's last 8 years. Hopefullyl people take that into consideration before voting.

the Wright ad is a dud; not well done and easy to turn off. At this point in the campaign the candidates should be more future oriented and inspirational.

May the entire country follow Dixville Notch!

Let's see, 15 to 6 = 2.5 to 1. So if Barack Obama gets 70% of the total vote and McBush about 25%, with the 3rd parties splitting 5%--that sounds about right!

Yes We CAN !!!!

ah, no no no Sparky: this is a good start to a very thorough a$$kicking.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:42 AM on 11/04/2008

I hear you Sparky... the difference this year is the numbers of people voting and the poll numbers... if it's there for the stealing, you can steal it... if the numbers are overwhelming, you can't steal it... you can't have exit polls of Obama 58, McCain 41 and turn in McCain wins by 17 points... that won't happen this year.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:04 PM on 11/04/2008

agreed - looks like near landslide numbers and also - Ohio is not a R controlled bastion like ue it was in 2004! That lone will tilt the election to.O.

But despite firm belief that the last 2 were stolen. O did his campaign well. And McC picked Sarah!

So - yeah it looks like way too big of a majority to steal - thank God.

That's my hope that it is, "way to big a majority to steal," because you know that they are trying.

I have a feeling that she may have ruined her brand after this. If not, it wouldn't surprise me, because we elected Bush twice.

There has to be an awful lot of people in this country who feel like total @sses, after those two Bush fiasco's. I can only hope that some of them have learned a lesson from that.

You should see how they are crying over at the Sludge Retort. They are throwing every last handful of mud that they can scrape up. The same is true of Faux Noose. It's hilarious! I'll be so glad when this is over. I just hope that the Republicans don't steal this one! I'll be up all night until the last state reports. I will not be able to sleep until it's done. I may not go to sleep at all.

Looks like Sarah's going to have to send her witch hunters up there to NH. It's clear that the local citizens have been possessed by the spirit of witchcraft, and have been bewitched by Obama. "Lord, make a way!"

LOL

Sure. Sarah Palin could send in the witch hunters, but the problem is they would wind up in Oregon.

She thinks New Hampshire is in the Northwest.

Dixville Notch is kind of near Montreal so Palin probably thinks Dixville is in France.

The lame reporting on Dixville Notch every few years really illustrates for me how the news media fails to do its job. Instead of talking about the candidates or issues they prefer to copy and paste from their Dixville Notch word document the same old trivial lines. Where is the AP analysis of why the voters there chose Obama instead?

Dixville Notch is just a side note to the news for me. At this point, I have no control over, and I really don't care why people are choosing Obama, just as long as they do. We can talk about the, "why," when it's over.
