DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. — Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

"I'm not going to say I wasn't surprised," said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch's first voter.

With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

Being first means something to residents of the Granite State, home of the nation's earliest presidential primary and the central focus _ however briefly _ of the vote-watching nation's attention every four years.

Town Clerk Rick Erwin said Dixville Notch is proud of its tradition, but added, "The most important thing is that we exemplify a 100 percent vote."

Dixville Notch resident Peter Johnson said the early bird electoral exercise "is fun." A former naval aviator, Johnson said he was voting for McCain, but added, "I think both candidates are excellent people."

Voting was carried out in a room in a local hotel festooned with political memorabilia from campaigns long past. Each voter gets an individual booth so there are no lines at the magic hour. The votes were quickly counted, announced and recorded on a posterboard that proclaims, "First in the Nation, Dixville Notch."

The tradition drew spectators, including Tim McKenna, who drove with his wife 16 miles from Cambridge, N.H., to witness the event.

"Living in New Hampshire, you hear so much about it in the news," said McKenna. "I think it's a very historic election this year."

Ed Butler, a Democratic state representative who runs the Notchland Inn in Hart's Location, said, "Being this small and being able to be first just makes it that much more special."

Although scores of states have voted early, the two villages are the first to officially announce the results on Election Day.

New Hampshire law requires polls to open at 11 a.m., but that doesn't stop towns from opening earlier. It also allows towns to close their polls once all registered and eligible voters have cast ballots.

Hart's Location started opening its polls early in 1948, the year Harry S. Truman beat Thomas Dewey, to accommodate railroad workers who had to get to work early. Hart's Location got out of the early voting business in 1964 after some residents grew weary of all the publicity, but brought it back in 1996.

Dixville Notch, nestled in a mountain pass 1,800 feet up and about halfway between the White Mountain National Forest and the Canadian border, followed suit in 1960, when John F. Kennedy beat Richard M. Nixon. Nixon, the Republican, swept all nine votes cast in Dixville that year, and before Tuesday, the town had gone for a Democrat only once since then. That was in 1968, when the tally was Democrat Hubert Humphrey eight, Nixon four.

2008 WILL BE THE PROOF OF JUST HOW MANY CAN BE FOOLED AGAIN BY MUD ,CHARACTER ASSASINATION, DISTORTIONS AND VOTER SURPRESSION. A landslide will be needed to prove that the voters cannot be fooled for a third time by the same old Republican tricks which have given us an 8-year disaster from which it will take a long time to recover.

Here, Here, very well said. I have listened and listened to the mccain team and still don't have any Idea what he wanted to do. All I saw and heard was lies, smears, dirty tricks and Joe the plumber, who by way, represents all the above by his loneself. When he opened his month to question Barack Obama, it's hard to believe that every thing he premised his question on was a lie. What kind of smack was that. anyway, Mccain, Palin and Joe the plumber all need to go away, ---- But never mind all that! Keep hope alive, change is a coming!! Yippee to NH and Go Barack Obama!

I just got back from voting in rural south central PA. The wait was "only" 50 minutes long, which is the longest I've had to wait to vote in any general election since I started voting in 1980. I was surrounded by republicans but I knew a lot of them were voting for one of the third party candidates, Ron Paul being the front runner. I did see a few voters wearing Obama/Biden bling but I knew we were in the minority. All in all a very pleasant experience.

I'll admit my only real source of angst tonight is Pennsylvania. I hope your state delivers. The rational part of me tells me McCain hasn't been able to make up the gap, but media spin manufacturing a close contest and back-of-my-mind doubt has me worried. If O takes Pennsylvania, I know he'll win. If not, we could be in trouble.

Media spin is continuing to say that McCain could pull this off. Do they know something we don't know. I am a total mess this morning.

I've been to that part of New Hampshire. Make no mistake, it's a very conservative part of the country. This is good.

I grew up in NE. Yes, it is very conservative up there in north country,(lots of John Birchers) BUT New Englanders have more than their fair share of common sense. Living in that part of the world makes one very practical. Some of them may not liked it , but they knew Obama is the right man for the job and they did what was right. Thanks for your 17 votes.

I find this fascinating. I was reading a liberal blog site yesterday that predicted Dixville Notch would go for McCain because of its long history of going Republican. The story went on to say don't sweat it when McCain wins this town. The fact that Obama won could be a great sign that it's going to be more of a blow out than anyone has predicted. Granted, this is a huge rationalization on my part because I want Obama to win, but I'm taking it as a good sign that this day will go our way!

I lived in the great state of NH for twenty-some years, and last night I had Dixville Notch going 18-3 for McCain. So glad to be wrong. But I wonder how the Senate race went. It would be so good if NH sent former governor Shaheen to replace Son of Sununu.

I pray this is a sign of what's to come this evening, I barely slept last night, I feel so nervous, like a Prostitute in Church, it's going to be a long day. If Obama wins, I may just open a bottle of champagne I've had for over four years, and celebrate the end of the "Reich Regime".

Grannysue, definitely open that bottle, but let's wait till it's over. I am an American living in Canada.
I voted by absentee ballot a few weeks back. I had a great nights sleep, but today I am shot. Nothing getting done here, but reading and watching the news. I am feeling pretty good about things and I am over the moon with the turnout. Obama has already given America new hope and change. He will have a hard time and WE THE PEOPLE must continue to support him, even when he does somethings we may not like. As he said, he is not a perfect person and will not be a perfect president, but he has re-awakened America to what we can be. For that we all must be thankful. As you said, it will be a long day, but we need to hang in there. I figure I'm in for a good cry when I hear those words.........President elect OBAMA. I am also very pleased that Joe Biden is his VP. It will be nice to have two good people in the WH.

Dixville Notch understands:

Three contractors are bidding to fix a broken fence at the White House in D.C.; one from Kentucky , another from Tennessee , and the third, from Georgia.

They go with a White House official to examine the fence.

The Georgia contractor takes out a tape measure and does some measuring, then works some figures with a pencil. 'Well', he says, 'I figure the job will run about $900: $400 for materials, $400 for my crew and $100 profit for me.'

The Tennessee contractor also does some measuring and figuring, then says, 'I can do this job for $700: $300 for materials, $300 for my crew and $100 profit for me.'

The Kentucky contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, '$2,700.'

The official, incredulous, says, 'You didn't even measure like the other guys! How did you come up with such a high figure?'

The Kentucky contractor whispers back, '$1000 for me, $1000 for you, and we hire the guy from Tennessee to fix the fence.'

'Done!' replies the government official.

And that my friends, is how it all works ! ! !

This is just the beginning, I hope. Although I have a strong belief that Obama will be our next president there still sits that lingering thought that this could turn the other way. It is my humble prayer that Obama does win.
Everyone that has not voted please get to the Polls, and make this happen.

At my polling place in a working class neighborhood of Manchester NH there was not a single McCain sign among the hundreds lining the entry to the school. And there was not a single McCain volunteer to be seen! Have they simply given up?
