DIXVILLE NOTCH, N.H. — Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

"I'm not going to say I wasn't surprised," said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch's first voter.

With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.

Being first means something to residents of the Granite State, home of the nation's earliest presidential primary and the central focus _ however briefly _ of the vote-watching nation's attention every four years.

Town Clerk Rick Erwin said Dixville Notch is proud of its tradition, but added, "The most important thing is that we exemplify a 100 percent vote."

Dixville Notch resident Peter Johnson said the early bird electoral exercise "is fun." A former naval aviator, Johnson said he was voting for McCain, but added, "I think both candidates are excellent people."

Voting was carried out in a room in a local hotel festooned with political memorabilia from campaigns long past. Each voter gets an individual booth so there are no lines at the magic hour. The votes were quickly counted, announced and recorded on a posterboard that proclaims, "First in the Nation, Dixville Notch."

The tradition drew spectators, including Tim McKenna, who drove with his wife 16 miles from Cambridge, N.H., to witness the event.

"Living in New Hampshire, you hear so much about it in the news," said McKenna. "I think it's a very historic election this year."

Ed Butler, a Democratic state representative who runs the Notchland Inn in Hart's Location, said, "Being this small and being able to be first just makes it that much more special."

Although scores of states have voted early, the two villages are the first to officially announce the results on Election Day.

New Hampshire law requires polls to open at 11 a.m., but that doesn't stop towns from opening earlier. It also allows towns to close their polls once all registered and eligible voters have cast ballots.

Hart's Location started opening its polls early in 1948, the year Harry S. Truman beat Thomas Dewey, to accommodate railroad workers who had to get to work early. Hart's Location got out of the early voting business in 1964 after some residents grew weary of all the publicity, but brought it back in 1996.

Dixville Notch, nestled in a mountain pass 1,800 feet up and about halfway between the White Mountain National Forest and the Canadian border, followed suit in 1960, when John F. Kennedy beat Richard M. Nixon. Nixon, the Republican, swept all nine votes cast in Dixville that year, and before Tuesday, the town had gone for a Democrat only once since then. That was in 1968, when the tally was Democrat Hubert Humphrey eight, Nixon four.

Remember to vote"not just for Barack Obama, but for Congressional, state, and local candidates as well.

Where and when do I vote?

Obama's voter hotline: 877-US4-OBAMA (877-874-6226)

What should I do before I go?
After you've entered your address on either Vote For Change or Vote411, read the voting instructions and special rules for your state.

Voting ID laws vary from state to state, but if you have ID, bring it. Check out all the voting myths and misinformation to look out for: http://truth.voteforchange.com/

What if something goes wrong? Not on the voter list?
Make sure you're at the right polling place, then demand a provisional ballot. If you're voting on an electronic machine with a paper record, verify that the record is accurate.

Please remember that when you're voting electronically, check to make sure your vote went through. Double and triple check. Good luck Obama/Biden. We're rooting for you. Time for America to come together. Time for the division to stop. We are all equal and I feel that this Obama government will bring us all together. Time for change.

When I voted this morning, I selected every Democrat on the ticket and one unopposed independent. There were 4 unopposed Republicans for which I felt it my duty to write in another person.

My new mission is to make sure that I never see another unopposed Rethug on a ticket here, even if I have to run for office myself.

Greetings from Washington state! Our city has mail-in voting and I so I have already cast my vote for Obama. I stayed up (as I always do) and watched our great country put the democratic process forward with Dixville Notch, NH. I went to bed after that and here I am now. I at woke up at 4:30 a.m. and am now sitting with laptop, TV remote and a hot cup of coffee. I just couldn't sleep any longer, especially today.

Voting is a proud process we have to show our voice at least one day when it matters!! It's the one day when I feel united with all the other citizens of the US.

This remarkable man by the name of Barack Obama will bring our nation into a new day, if we elect him to do so. Our great country has endured through much in its relatively short history, and we to turn it around, and today is the day we can start.

Obama to the White House!

Today I cast the most vote of my life. There are many things to be fixed in our country but I am so proud of our country to have gotten to this point in our democracy.

In my county of 15,000 people (and one traffic light) there is great disagreement about who will be the better President but I was proud to see a line of people waiting to vote at 6am and I understand that was the case at all 6 voting locations.

Now the tough work begins....cleaning up after the last several years of neglect and abuse. We're truly a great nation.

Great beginning, but, when will the rest of this nation emulate the State of Oregon? Geez, folks, no lines. Just a whole lot of ballot boxes in the libraries and drop-by boxes across the cities. Mail in - No waiting and no fraud.

I am so p.i.s.s.e.d....I have a friend who I have known for more then 20 years...we talked for months about Obama and she really liked him and hopes he will win.
I asked her via email(she lives 50 miles from me) if she had voted early here in Ohio...I just got an email from her this morning, her hubby voted, but she never registered.
If I could have reached through the computer I would have slapped her...I am very angry at her right now and not sure how I really feel about her not even registering and then not taking the time to vote.

She does not work(stay at home wife) so there are no excuses...I just do not know what to say.
Thought I knew her.

I know the feeling. While doing data entry work in my local Obama office, I realized that my friend of nearly 20 years, a conscientious, smart (or so I thoufht) guy, his wife and two kids were all registered republicans and they all supported McCain. I have still not gotten over this shock and I really do not know how to even open a conversation with him anymore, since I was led to believe all along that he was a democrat. People.

Thanks for the replies....she is so like me, we are just like sisters and I should have gotten a hint when she was tired of all the coverage on tv everyday.
Her hubby voted Obama and she can not wait till this is all over...I can at least say this about her, she is not a part of this history...she missed out on it all.
Shame on her.

That's ok. It's good that everyone can hold different opinions but still respect each other's right to ther own views.

Why would you not still be friends? Obviously you had other shared interests and didn't clash politically so why would it matter?

I understand i had a couple of those also but the beauty is that more people have registered.

My 22 year old nerve and his girl friend voted yesterday in CA
My 18 year old form track stundent voted early
My 5 sister and older bother already voted in Ohio
My sister-n-law voted in Texax

I have one of those friends, too. I try to be patient, but I see it as lazy and not taking responsibility for being an American Citizen.

I think her religious beliefs may have something to do with it, too.

Well it gives you a goal to get her to register for the next election. Other than that, there shouldn't be a problem.

If she is truly a good friend of yours, you should be able to overlook it. If this comes between your friendship, it will be because of you and not because of her. I sure hope that your friendship does not hinge on this one thing.

It seems that it's your choice to make. Give her some room to be herself.

Don't mean to dump on you... just trying to help.
